Nearly 50 percent of men in Scotland who pay for sex at home or abroad have a partner and the percentage could be greater, researchers said on Monday.
One in 10 men questioned in a survey in Glasgow admitted that they had paid for sex recently and 27 percent said they repeatedly visited prostitutes.
"Approximately half of all men paying for sex were in a concurrent relationship," said Dr Tamsin Groom, of the Sandyford Initiative in Glasgow, in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.
The men visited prostitutes abroad or at home but rarely did both. Most used condoms but unprotected sex was more common in men who paid for sex while abroad.
None of the 2,500 men who were questioned while attending a sexual health clinic between October 2002 and February 2004 was HIV positive but one in five had a sexually transmitted infection, including gonorrhoea, Chlamydia and syphilis.
Fifty-six percent of the men who reported having unprotected sex with a prostitute had a partner.
"This shows the possibility of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and, for men paying for sex abroad, the possibility of acting as a 'bridge' between different populations," Groom added.
The researchers believe the numbers of men paying for sex -- and by extension those with partners -- could be higher because some men may not want to admit it.
The report said the European country in which the percentage of men paying for sex was highest was Spain, at 39 percent.
"In Asian countries the purchasing of sex acts is higher and is frequently considered to be normal male behavior, with 73 percent of Thai men buying sex," Groom said.
Taking a detailed history when men admit to paying for sex will enable health workers to promote safer sex and to minimize the harm to the men's partners, she added.
And is there any guy in Thailand that can get done w/o paying?

Well...lets just stay ignorant of human sexual behavior and demographics. Why bother with gathering research, anyways?
I for one, am surprised at the percentage of men who do use prostitutes outside of marriage. ...and then not follow some safe sex practices! Yeesh!
