They're getting like a puppy factory! My concern besides the fact that there are so many kids in America who need homes (Oh but they aren't in the "rainbow" category sorry is that these kids are from such different cultures-white parents and the kid is black from some village thousands of miles away-many cultures away. How does this affect the kid? So the parents take the kid to Africa once a year and he sucks in his culture? It will be interesting to see how this affects the kid when he/she is older.

I think Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are sincere, although it's ridiculous they haven't married. Madonna, however, is 100% motivated by envy of the attention Angelina Jolie has got from adopting. In fact, Madonna's probably ticked off that Angelina's adopting another because how's she (Madonna) gonna to THAT?

So are you against transracial adoptions? Or international adoptions? Many couples here, most who are nowhere near rich, are bypassing adopting older children in the U.S. to adopt babies in China, Korea, and other countries? Do you criticize them, too?

"Real nice, now he`s taken away to be raised by a slut."
Is that worse than dying of malnutrition and disease? I think Madonna is a stupid slut too, but I would rather be adopted by her than grow up in an African orphanage. Wouldn't you?

Interesting how no one adopts American children. Also, it's acceptable to adopt a black child from Africa but not a black child from America? With the adoption flurry in Hollywood, why is no one helping their own nation's children? That would be the more noble thing to do, in my opinion.

"Adult Children adopting boutique orphans is revolting."
I agree, but not nearly as revolting as being an orphan in one of these third world hellholes.
I want to make fun of these stupid celebrities for whom adopting children is the newest fad too, but fad or not, there are a few children who are going to be better off because of their lunatic adoptive parents. I can't make fun of that.

PROFILE: Josephine Baker (1906-1975), is known as the "girl who danced her way through the 20's and 30's only dressed in bananas". A dancer, singer, actress and a comedian all in one, Josephine Baker was the first black female entertainer to break through racial prejudice in Europe and the United States. Her acts were both outrageously funny and quite sexy. She was a star of stage, screen and recordings, a civil rights activist and an honored military woman during World War II. She adopted 12 children of different races, whom she called the "Rainbow Tribe". Josephine sought to prove that "children of different ethnicities and religions could be brothers". Josephine's stardom lasted for 50 years; her fans gave her extravagant gifts such as diamonds and cars, and she received over 1,500 marriage proposals.

"This is exactly what I think every time I read about these celebrity adoptions and it is exactly what annoys me so much."
You think the nannies are going to treat them worse than the overworked orphanage staff?

Many of us Freepers have adopted overseas. A child is a child is a child. We were open to mixed-race adoptions (a liklihood where I live), but we were NOT open to dealing with social service crap. We weren't willing to bring a child into our home, and find out two years later that we couldn't complete the adoption because the bio mother was going to be given a second, third, or fourth chance.
You have to jump through long and lengthy hoops to adopt through foster care here, with no guarantee that it will ever happen. Not everyone is willing to risk the pain that goes with "giving back" a child.
Besides, kids in foster care here generally get 3 square meals a day, have a roof over their heads, sleep in warm beds, and go to school. I'm not discounting how awful it must be not to have real parents, but at least they have a chance at a somewhat normal life.

Interesting post. I recently watched a program on the Discovery channel about Brazil and learned that over 40% of the slaves exported from Africa went to Brazil. Something like 6 or 7 times the amount that went to the U.S. Bahia was heavily settled by these slaves and much of the culture/religion still exists to this day. You certainly don't hear of the racism issues there that we have here.
The history of caipira was also very interesting. A martial art disguised as a dance.... It sure is amazing to watch.
Truly a country that is "abençoada de Deus".

Angelina, 31, has declared that she'd like kiddies from all over the world. Go to eBay "collectibles"

You think the nannies are going to treat them worse than the overworked orphanage staff? No. But I object to people being used as the right accessory when a handbag just isn't enough to get one-up on fellow celebs.

When I travel, I come back with souveniers. I guess the hot new thing is souvenier orphans. I can see them pointing them out individually at the parties they give, saying "Here is Buehmoemo, light shaded and found at the market in Angola - quite a find indeed!"
I just hope they don't start up with interplanetary travels anytime soon, the next child may be a grey.

You're joking, right? What's "more noble" about adopting a child who gets three square meals a day, goes to school, comes home to a warm bed, and if he works hard, has a future in this country? Kudos to people who are willing to put up with the foster care system long enough to adopt a child there, but I can assure you that they are no more noble than any other adoptive parent. Besides, most adoptive parents don't call themselves "noble." We're just "mom" and "dad."
Some of my kids were adopted internationally (and for those interested, they weren't infants), and their lot in life would have been starvation on the streets, or a life of prostitution and crime after they were made to leave the orphanage when they were fifteen or sixteen.
I would encourage all freepers to consider adoption, including single freepers. One parent is a HELL OF A LOT BETTER than no parent.

"Are you so base as to believe that any adoption, so long as it is from Third World to First is a good thing, even if it is to parents who regard the child as a prop rather than a human being? "
Where would you rather grow up, in a third world hellhole with no money, no education, no opportunities and no parents, or in the US or England, with money, education, and opportunities and no parents, or adoptive parents who don't care about you?

Step back for a moment; some of these children who are being adopted by celebrities aren't orphans - Madonna's isn't.
Second, even if the child was, it's completely wrong to call "prop adoptions" an unadulterated good. We should question the celebrities on this - it's horrifying to think that human beings are being used like Prada bags. Yes, it is better that they grow up with opportunities, but it doesn't make children being adopted in this way a right or even a good thing.

As someone who has walked through orphanages, I'm NOT going to speak ill about anyone who is promoting adoption. I might hate her politics, I might wonder when she's going to give these kids a legal dad, but I would bet you anything that she is causing people to think about adoption.
How do I know this?
From observing someone else adopt, and thinking, "You know, we could do that! We have enough money. We have enough love in our hearts."
And now my (internationally) kids have parents and siblings who love them, a home, and a future.
