Step back for a moment; some of these children who are being adopted by celebrities aren't orphans - Madonna's isn't.

Most babies adopted in the U.S. are not orphans. Many of them could possibly be raised by their birth parents had more money or parenting help. But we don't require adoptive parents to offer to pay for the birth parent's college or for a nanny in order to adopt. I don't understand why this is such a big deal anyway- people adopt all time babies that have one or both parents available, or are from a different culture or race than the parent.

"No. But I object to people being used as the right accessory when a handbag just isn't enough to get one-up on fellow celebs."'

You object to that more than orphans growing up in poverty with no education and no opportunities?

I object to the way it is done.

Being a wealthy attention whore does not give one the right, in the midst of a media frenzy to publicly "help" the wittle poor people, in what appears to be a ratings battle between two such nonentities.

As many have rightly pointed out on this thread, the money showered upon one could help hundreds. Do you prefer that one is helped, rather than hundreds?

Just how many fashion accessories does this one woman need? Utterly sickening.

"Step back for a moment; some of these children who are being adopted by celebrities aren't orphans - Madonna's isn't. "

He wasn't living with his father, he might as well have been.

"Second, even if the child was, it's completely wrong to call "prop adoptions" an unadulterated good."

I didn't say it was, I said it was better than the alternative of growing up without anything, parents, education, health care, proper nutrition, or opportunity.

"We should question the celebrities on this - it's horrifying to think that human beings are being used like Prada bags."

You would prefer they were forced to resort to prostitution or were recruited into the mob or as child soldiers in order to make their living? These are the opportunities that await orphans upon their 15th or 16th birthday in third world nations.

That is, those lucky enough to live in orphanages to begin with. Street children live like that their whole lives.

I'd like to know how she manages to get around the red tape and specific requirements countries have for adopting internationally.

You mean, MONEY OPENS DOORS? REALLY...I had NO IDEA, it's just so shocking!!! Give me a break. What stumps me is the complete naivity displayed on these boards.

By jumping up and down on this thread, you're getting worked up by people who are saying it isn't an unadulterated good. One wonders why.

You would prefer they were forced to resort to prostitution or were recruited into the mob or as child soldiers in order to make their living? These are the opportunities that await orphans upon their 15th or 16th birthday in third world nations.

That's a thoroughly hysterical point of view. No one has said these children should be forced into this lifestyle. What is being asked is what value these celebrities are actually placing on these human lives. Are they going to treat the responsibility with the seriousness it merits? Again, these are questions that should be asked. The hyperbole in your post makes it implicit that you regard these questions being asked as being out of order. I disagree. Celebrities who use human beings as props should be questioned. Hopefully that will kick them into treating the life they take into their hands with sufficient respect.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

You know...I'm a conservative who believes that kids need a mother and a father, but I strongly promote adoptions among the married and single. Even knowing that these children will be starving on the streets, I sometimes meet with the far right winger who thinks a kid is better of starving than living with a single mother.

It's at that time that I realize that - for some reason - God gave some people book smarts, but NO common sense!

Anyway, I'm NO fan of Jolie or Brad Pitt or Madonna, but if their actions spur others to adopt, I'm all for it.

I know that Russia is very picky about adoptive parents regarding physical/mental health, etc. What I have read on India says that couples must not have more than two children at home and that they prefer married couples with one divorce per parent allowed. It is frustrating in a way to read this stuff because we know so many people who are discouraged by the paperwork and red tape.

You have to wonder how her kids handle having all this going on in their lives. Do they have a lot of stability?

I prefer one is helped over none helped, because those are the alternatives. You may think they should be helping hundreds with their money, instead of just one, but you have no say in the matter. Celebrities have as much right to decide how to spend their money as anyone else.

The fact that celebrities may or may not be attention whores doesn't change the fact that at least one child is being helped when they adopt. It is better than none, which is exactly how many children would be helped if adoptions by celebrities were somehow prohibited.

Do you prefer that no children are helped?

I favor adoption even if only to complete a rainbow, the alternatives are much worse.

I disagree. When Mia Farrow or Meg Ryan (recently) adopted, there wasn't jack said about it in the media. Brad and Angie have only themselves to blame. They've put themselves in the spotlight, and as such, become media darlings.

Most black kids for adoption in the US a children of crack addicts...they have serious medical problems that require huge amounts of financial resources. Nobody who I know who has adopted children has adopted from America. Most have from Russia or China....

"It's a true joy and a very profound love," [Brad] said.

Wonder how he'll feel in the future when his accountant is writing out the support checks for his bio-kid and all of the other ones they're currently collecting?

Somehow, I don't see this soulmate partnership lasting. Call me cynical about a relationship that starts out as an adultrous affair actually going the distance. And why haven't they gotten married yet? Still shopping the photo 'rights' to the highest bidder in the media? *Rolleyes*

If we could manage to cut through the red tape and had the finances, we would adopt more kids. But at some point I'd have to evaluate if I could give them the time and attention they need.

Adoption (IMO) is not only adding a child to your family, it is a committment to the birthparents, the child, and God that you are going to do the absolute best you can and be the best parent you can for that child.

Angelina is the one who convinced Madonna to adopt an African child. Madonna was on the list here in the US to adopt but the process was taking too long. My fear is that international adoption is become the trend in Hollywood, and because famous people have the money to bend and circumvent laws, it will be regular folks like you and I who suffer when laws get changed.

You know, that's a shame, because I'm in need of adoption by a rich hollywood star- but alas, I have no chance- I'm not from Zimbabwei, Guam or Peru. I was so looking forward to being a token adoptee too.

They have only been together a couple of years haven't they? Neither seems to have a very long track record in relationships do they?
