Politics might be the top water-cooler conversation this week, but dont expect to hear it coming over the airwaves from shock-rocker Alice Cooper, whose syndicated radio show has been picked up by Bostons WZLX-FM.
I dont do politics. Hate politics, said Cooper, who said rock and politics dont mix. Rock n roll is entertainment. Since when do we rockers know anything about politics?
Cooper, 58, was a guest DJ early yesterday at WZLX (100.7), where his syndicated radio show, Nights with Alice Cooper, now airs on Saturday nights.
The granddad of theatrical metal performed at the Orpheum Sunday and ends his tour tonight - on Halloween - at Foxwoods.
Coopers radio show was on just five stations when it debuted nearly three years ago. Now, its heard on more than 100 stations.
I go to deeper music. I come from the 60s, 70s era and I think a lot of that classic rock gets lost. And with that, every single artist I play I know, Cooper told the Herald yesterday.
I can tell stories about people that DJs cant do. I can say things about artists that DJs cant say. The artists I talk about are guys that know my sense of humor, Cooper said.
Cooper doesnt use bad language on the radio - or on stage. Its much funnier and much more clever to work clean, he said.
Coopers show includes interviews with famous rockers and his opinions on the tracks he plays. Unlike other DJs, Cooper said he can flip through his Rolodex and call the very same people that Im playing.
Cooper does his radio show from Arizona, where he lives with his wife of 30 years. When he tours - about five months a year - he takes the show on the road.
While some rock legends have become reality TV stars, dont expect the same of Cooper, even though he says his family would make great TV. Coopers wife is a trained ballerina and theyve got three very bright kids.
Hate reality TV. I totally am based in fantasy, Cooper said, adding, The only privacy I have is my house.
Chrissie Hynde: "Have we gone to war yet? We (expletive) deserve to get bombed. Bring it on. Let's get rid of all the economic (expletive) this country represents! Bring it on, I hope the Muslims win!"
Alice Cooper: "Rock should never be in bed with politics. When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.
"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal." "Besides, when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn't already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that's a good reason right there to vote for Bush."
how'd they pry Cooper off the golf course ?
I've heard the Coop's show - one of the best rock shows on radio right now. Dwight Frye would approve!

Alice Cooper is AWESOME!!!
The cult of celebrity is amazing. Here's a "rocker" claiming he and his ilk have no special talent for diagnosing politics yet his message about politics gets picked up. Alice has always been shocking and the broad brush comments, he makes although you may like them are stupid.
I think one of the main reasons for this is that celebrities are willing to speak their minds and take a stand no matter how badly formed the idea. On the other hand we have politicians that lack the will to take a stand and instead rely on poll after poll. Why is this? Because a good portion of the American citizens have loss the ability to reason, they answer a phone and they give impulsive emotional answers. These people are not even consistent, you can ask them the same question over a period of time and the opinion will change depending on what propaganda message they heard last.
Some of these unreasonable Americans will post any crap that is uttered by a celebrity to ridicule or lionize depending on the message. This is the key to the cult of celebrity be controversial keep your name out there. Alice Cooper knows this and that's why his public business persona is so successful. And why he keeps his family life private.
There should have been a constitutional amendment adding property ownership to the list of qualifiers for voting. The voting process should be fill-in the blank and not multiple choice. If you are too stupid to know the name or to create a cheat sheet then your vote should not count. These two additions would create a better electorate and perhaps better leaders.
Rock on,
