COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - Disgraced U.S. evangelist Ted Haggard, a vocal opponent of gay marriage, said on Sunday that he was guilty of "sexual immorality" and that he had long battled with a "repulsive" side of his life.
"I am guilty of sexual immorality, I am a deceiver and a liar. There is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark and I've been warring against it my entire adult life", Haggard said in a letter that was read to his New Life Church in Colorado Springs by a church overseer.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what he's guilty of. The accuser couldn't passs a lie detector test when asked if they had sex.
Yeah, I hope he goes away forever now.
Great. Another Christian leader bits the dust. The left is loving it.
That does it; I'm voting Democrat--to help preserve my values in light of this outrage.
What's with preachers named Haggard? Is it something like the Superman or Kennedy curse?
Hey if we don't vote 'rat we'll never be able to celebrate this for the sheer beauty of it.
Then it's poppers, gay orgies and parties every day. Oh what a wonderful world.
So co-incidental that this worm came out with these accusations right before the election. Haggard should be tarred and feathered for rank hypocrisy, but one should suspect the timing of these revelations from his homosexual prostitute.
This is why gays don't belong in the military.
LOL Yep, I'm gonna run out and support gay marriage because some minister I never heard of may or may not have been caving with some rump spelunker I've never heard of.
Yeah, how does the MSM get to thinking this'll have an impact on the election? Smells like desparate to me.
Want to bet Haggard volunteers to perform Governor McJersey's gay wedding...probably an Oprah show coming from this freak too.
I question the timing of this.
LOL, my reaction exactly.
I'm sure this has been asked several times, but who is this guy?? I'm a Christian and I've never heard of the him. Seems to be getting a whole lot of national coverage when its basically an internal church issue.
POLYGRAPHS ARE NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE.
"but one should suspect the timing of these revelations from his homosexual prostitute."
Of course. He did it for political purposes...no question about it. Still, Haggard's a creep. He deceived his wife and family. He deceived his congregation. Both are well rid of him.
This won't affect anyone's vote, nor will it keep people from voting. It's just one more creepy person betraying other people's trust.
Keyboard works again.
POLYGRAPHS ARE NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE.
PARAGRAPHS ARE NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE
Yes. ?
You forgot the sarcasm.
I didn't know who this guy was but the minute I saw a video of him online I ask how anyone could think this guy is straight, cause he is totally flaming gay IMO!
Monographs are often not accurate as well.
More than just a pastor.
Me too. Shows the republicans are ALL hypocrites...Now Hillary--there's a god fearing woman I can get behind. Can't wait to vote across-the-board democrat in the New York elections on Tuesday, because THIS preacher sinned.
I didn't think I had much of a gaydar. I saw this guy interviewed about two years ago and thought to myself: "this guy obviously goes to Pottery Barn on a regular basis."
He has to come out with a book to sell first...
Or maybe he'll do the right thing and retreat to privacy and fix his life. And serve as a lesson to not rely on middlemen for your salvation-- go straight to the source: JC Himself.
I've been a Christian all my adult life and I have never heard of him either.
"I'm sure this has been asked several times, but who is this guy?? I'm a Christian and I've never heard of the him. Seems to be getting a whole lot of national coverage when its basically an internal church issue. "
You may not have heard of him, but he's been a pretty prominent character in the evangelical movement. He was he head of the NAE, a group with lots of members, including most of the envangelicals you have heard of.
As for his church...it was his. It's a huge edifice, built with the money of his congregation, which numbers about 11,000. They were duped by this creep.
He's yet another in a long line of religious hucksters, pretending to lead people to Jesus, while pocketing their money and doing as they please.
It's easy. You just have to have a good speaking voice, be good-looking, and know enough about the Bible to preach. Add some good musicians and a lot of Hollywood-style production values and pretty soon you have a mega church.
Of course, there's a lot of collection plate passing, fund drives of all sorts, and general grifting to do, but con men are good at that. This one built a pretty good little con game, but he made a mistake. He thought he could get away with getting sex from some gay prostitute and taking drugs.
Pride. It's a terrible thing, and this guy was full of it.
As for it affecting anyone's vote...well that's just silly. There are sure a lot of people who were members of his congregation, though, who have to be asking themselves how they could have been so deceived.
An old story. Rent "Elmer Gantry" from NetFlix. It's a perfect explanation of how this happens.
Mr. Haggard seems remorseful, and he acknowledges what he did was wrong.

Pastor of a large "seeker friendly" church in Colorado Springs, CO. The real reason the left is so happy is that this nitwit was National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), the largest evangelical group in America.
Of course, it doesn't change the way those people vote.
Another cheap huckster in a big box loses his fleecing the flock permit. These guys are tiresome.

Took his time about it, though, didn't he?
That's it in a nutshell. One sick perv (that most Americans never heard of before the other day) certainly isn't going to affect an election.
Yep, but at least he did.
His dethroning actually helps Pres. Bush in his opposition to Gore and the environmentalists.
I was wondering the same thing last week when I was hearing ABC Radio News lead off with it at the top of every hour in breathless, excited tones.
From the lowliest surf to the grandest kings, we are human and will sin. Anyone grounded in faith understands. It's only the godless liberals who don't understand and who see some advantage here.
Pray for his wife and children. They are the victims of this sick and vile man.
The Democrats have no room to critisize. They are such hypocrytes. They are the party of the immoral. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
I agree with you, no legs to this and no legs to the saddam story. Maybe the election is just to close now for all these useless attempts to change anything.
"From the lowliest surf to the grandest kings, we are human and will sin."
Well, I don't use the word "sin." But you're right. On the other hand, there are misbehaviors and misbehaviors. It's particularly egregious when someone like this man, who vaunted himself up as a leader against things like homosexuality does the very thing he's preaching against.
Most ministers don't do this. Yes, they may be prideful or drink too much, or take advantage of their congregation to become rich and powerful. But they don't do what they're preaching against.
Haggard is a false minister. He led his flock down one path while he was on a different path. That sort of dishonesty is the worst kind of hypocrisy.
He deserves the disgust of those who followed him down the path he was not following. They needn't change their views, but they must be looking in a different way at how they blindly followed a charlatan.
It's worth thinking about. I've known many pastors, priests, and ministers in my life. Almost all were good men who believed what they taught, and tried very hard to lead the life they were asking of others. Did they make mistakes? Sure...but not like this creep.
Or the clergy.
"Pray for his wife and children. They are the victims of this sick and vile man.
"
As are the 11,000 members of his congregation.
