Jackson and Hobbits to Quest and Save Hollywood Yet Again?
Variety/Comingsoon ^ | Nov 14th 2006

Variety reports that MGM chairman and chief executive Harry Sloan talked about the studio's five core franchises at the European Media Leaders Summit in London.

As for The Hobbit, Sloan confirmed that MGM was in advanced talks with Peter Jackson to make two movies based on JRR Tolkien's "prequel" to "The Lord of the Rings."

The first would be a direct adaptation of The Hobbit, and the second would be drawn from "footnotes and source material connecting 'The Hobbit' with 'Lord of the Rings,'" he explained.

An MGM spokesman emphasized that negotiations with Jackson are still in progress, and that production isn't likely until 2008 or even 2009.

Heh, it's the George Lucas school of filmmaking... just make a few movies, then keep re-releasing and re-packaging them for all eternity.

I'd LOVE to see Jackson do the hobbit! I've been waiting patiently since LOTR.

the gobblin attack in teh misty mountains and bard's slaying of smaug are two scenes I'd dearly love to see!

>Good news for Tolkien fans....perhaps

Yeah, because Jackson's
first trilogy didn't suck
enough for real fans,

and his "King Kong" thing
didn't suck enough to end
his career out-right . . .

You know, you're on to something. I started watching the extended editions of the Jackson trilogy again recently. I have yet to watch Return of the King again, but I was watching the first two again, and I thought the first movie was a good adaptation of the Fellowship, but The Two Towers was really hit and miss. There were some really good individual scenes, but my main issue is that I really don't like Gimli and Faramir were portrayed.
