The mother of a Brazilian fashion model who died from complications of anorexia has made an emotional appeal for parents to take better care of aspiring young models.
The death of Ana Carolina Reston, 21, follows growing criticism of the use of underweight models in the fashion world, an issue given new significance after the death in August of Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos of heart failure during a fashion show in Montevideo.
Reston died on Tuesday in a Sao Paulo hospital from a generalized infection caused by anorexia, an eating disorder in which sufferers obsessively deprive themselves of food in pursuit of an ultra-slim look.
Reston weighed only 88 pounds (40 kg) and was about 5 feet 8 inches tall. Doctors consider the weight normal for a 12-year-old girl about 5 feet tall.
"Take care of your children ... no money is worth the life of your child, not even the most famous (fashion) brand is worth this," her mother, Miriam, told O Globo newspaper.
She said her daughter had been trying to help her family with the money she made as a model. Miriam spoke on national television and to local media to highlight the tragedy.
She said she had pleaded with her daughter to eat more and to see a doctor. "She would reply, 'Mummy, don't mess me around,'" Miriam told O Estado de S.Paulo.
O Dia tabloid carried a picture of the dark-haired, big-eyed girl in lingerie on its front-page with the headline "Dictatorship of skinny look kills a model."

Who finds these runway cadavers attrative?
That is just awful.
Fayg designers, who like their women to look like boys.
That said, I do believe that anorexia is a real mental disorder and it must be heartbreaking to watch someone fade away by their own doing and you cannot stop them.
"Who finds these runway cadavers attrative?"
The models think they're attractive. Personally I think bony women are horrible looking. Same with bony men.
How do you prefer your men?
I once saw a girl in Atlanta that had a body like this..she was SO skinny, and the skin so taut on her face, it was like looking at a skull with a thin layer of skin over it..truly disgusting..I told her she needed something to eat and in a hurry..she showed me a candy bar with one bite taken and told me it was her dinner, she didn't want to get fat (she threw out the rest of the bar)..that woman could have gained 50 pounds and STILL been skinny..
Who decided to let gay men decide the "ideal" woman? Is it any wonder why the fashion industry wants their female models to look like young boys?
I was diagnosed with anorexia in high school and I weighed 120 lbs. at 5'7". I was borderline anemic by then.
I don't know why, but I got to where I couldn't make myself eat without horrible guilt feelings. Not even a lifesaver or a mint. Once in awhile, if I got dizzy or passed out, I'd eat a sandwich. Usually when a friend would make me.
I weigh a lot more than that now that I quit smoking and had all the plumbing yanked out!
Actually, the ones who are truly anorexic think they're fat. It's an awful disorder.
As friends. Hah!
I know someone very dear to me who had this problem...same guilt for eating anything. We nearly lost her, but 5 years later she is doing fine. We are looking forward to Thanksgiving. I am so very glad that you are doing well.
I got a whole bunch of those in an email the other day.
Any idea as to their origin?
That's sick. She looks like someone from Auschwitz. Why does anyone think that's attractive?
How very kind of you! I'm likewise very glad that your dear one is better. I don't know what caused this and I have to correct myself when I sometimes wish I were like that again. Starving myself cased me to have trouble dieting now and also to have really poor periodontal health. But I knew some who had their hair even fall out!
Funny you mentioned Thanksgiving. I was talking about this earlier and some friends told me I should eat what I like for T-day. I'm overweight now but I've lost 15 lbs. in 3 mos. That's a healthy rate vs. 40 lbs. in 2 mos.
Wow! Kate's looking like she's put on a few ounces...
Ug she looks like she just came out of a concentration camp
I do NOT know how this picture is real. Jeez, that is not attractive!
Oh, damn... the picture made me gasp!
The two models who died. Funny, but they look 'ok', don't they? /sarc
Really, the problem is that for the average woman to maintain 'that' look, she has to starve....so it ain't normal, now is it?
I've taken care of AIDS pt's....I've taken care of COPD'ers..and cancer pt's...that looked as bad as that girl.
Just for fun,
check out the Disciples of Ana (anorexia) sites on google.
Or google images of anorexia. She looks in par with the end stages. And sadly, death to them is way preferable to being 'fat'.....the unforgivable sin.
Not sure your comment is accurate....
In what way? I've work with nutrition and eating issues....and the 'natural' thin with a BMI lower than 20 are under 8% of the population. For the remainder to acheive that goal, they have to literally starve.
Damage to teeth, to various organs, thinning hair, facial peach fuzz...it's a terrible disease. I just know you will find the inbetween way that will be just right for you.
Some free advice which is worth what you pay for it, stick to your guns on Thanksgiving. If you are on a track, stay on it. The path is treacherous between the holidays. Believe me, I know this :) If you hold fast, you will feel good about it.
The women who buy the clothes they make.
The fags who design the clothes, apparently. Seriously, while models have always been sort of skinny, the past couple of years they have looked like crap - way too skinny for any red blooded normal man to like.
Damn, they either choke on a ham samwich or starve themselves to death!
And there were still probably industry types telling her to lose a couple pounds.
IIRC, there was a Ms. Brazil who was in Ms. Universe competition and they were complaining she was too heavy. There was also discussion about having the lower ribs on both sides removed to make the waist smaller.
There really is something unpleasant about the 'making them look like boys' thing. Remember Twiggy? That's what I aspired to look like. 5'6" and 86 lbs.
There are actual pro-Anorexia sites that use pictures like these for "Thinspiration".
Me too, but there was always that darn pizza :)
You can never be too rich or too thin.
Like, heavy, man!
I've always pitied slaves to fashion.
It's a chicken and egg - do people buy the clothes because designers and fashion mags say they should or do designers make their clothes to fit with what the masses want?
I see more of a than b. Otherwise designers would be using size 12 models - the average dress size nowadays. Instead they design clothes for young boys and sell them as women's clothes.
for the average woman to maintain 'that' look, she has to starve
The models are starving too. An acquaintance of mine is a fashion model ... has had big spreads in Vogue, etc. She looked more "filled-out" 5 years ago, as a high-school senior than she does now. I fear for her life.
I watched a disturbing documentary on HBO the other night about anorexia/bulimia called "Thin." I would recommend it to the parents of any young girl who might be susceptible to this monstrous psychological disorder.
"You can never be too rich or too thin."
Or too dead.
