The author overstates the case a bit, understandable given his background. As to Grant's own family was involved in cotton speculation (as well as owning slaves), so perhaps he considered Jewish traders to be competition it's my understanding Grant's father's partner was Jewish, and that signing the ban, if Grant was aware of it, was a way of getting rid of an embarrassing situation, his own father trading in cotton.

Hey, Jews do get blamed for everything. Even the Civil War. Of course, anti-Semites would think Grant was a great guy for doing this.
To: SJackson
Think the anti-war stuff is bad now? - just read what happened in Northern cities and how Lincoln was treated during the civil war...

Good grief. How far are they going to dig to keep this up? One hundred-forty years ago. What's the connection to today?

General Orders #11Basically, some war profiteers were kicked out and some innocent people were inconvenienced. Nobody was killed, nobody was hurt. The order rescinded after 2 weeks.
All in all, is this is "America's worst Anti-Jewish action" then the U.S. has a pretty damn good track record.
Mr. Regenstein & I had a rather acrimonious email argument over this. But what can I say, I am a "Damn Yankee"
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel/Russian Jewry ping list.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
