"Sherman was apparently a vicious anti-Semite"
In addition to being a psychotic arsonist who was guided by the voices in his head.
So am I. I think I'll just read rather than joining the continuation of the Civil War.
I guess you love Sherman as much as I do.
Sheridan was another homicidal psycho.
The Confederacy also made Judah P. Benjamin the first Jew since the time of Herod Agrippa I and his grandchildren to have his portrait on money.
My thoughts exactly. Must got hold of some moonshine.

The sources of that conflict, having never been adequately resolved, continue to this day. It is, in fact, precisely what brings many to this forum.
One faction of this country believed(and still believes) in a centralized federal government that dictated, and controlled all.
An opposing faction believed(and still believes) in individual, and states rights over exercising said controls.
Whether those factions are called yankees & rebels, or liberals & conservatives, the same conflicts and struggles continue to be fought.
How does that fit into "Shame of the Yankees"? It's clearly an attempt to connect people of today to 140 years ago. It's fatuous and divisive.
"Its ironic that Jews had such a good relationship with anti-bellum southerners and after the war they became the objects of attack by the KKK along with blacks and Catholics."
Makes one wonder, but then it took the South over a century to recover, so scapegoating was a much easier task. Without romanticizing the South, had there been no slavery, it seems that the North's cause may have been interpreted a bit differently by historians. I guess the question is whether they would have even gotten approval for the war based on economic reasons had there been no slavery.
Odd, it used to be called "history".
I seem to remember a quote about what happens to those who ignore "history"...must look that up.
As Americans, we have little to beat ourselves up about regarding slavery. It has existed literally everywhere, virtually since the dawn of man.
Most enslaved others for many hundreds, often thousands of years. Indeed, many continue even today.
By comparison, slavery only existed under the US flag for 80 years; and under the Confederate flag for 4 years.
By any comparison, the US should carry very little shame about slavery.....and the 'South' even 20 times less than that.
No slavery - no civil war.
Not every Southerner supported Slavery and not every northerner supported it, but the few radicals of the north and south who brought on the war did so over the issue of slavery.
No, but Bobby "KKK" Byrd played a Confederate one.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is "Shame of the Yankees"?
Very much so. As mentioned in the article, Charleston, South Carolina had a large and vibrant Jewish community that lived in peace and prosperity there until the War and its aftermath. I don't know when the worm turned and the KKK and their ilk expanded their hatred to include Jews, but it's definitely worth noting that for Jews in antebellum America, here in the South was the place (generally) where they had the easiest time.

Had there been no slavery there would have been no war, so in that sense you are correct.
So did Allen
"Odd, it used to be called "history".

I have a really silly historical question, since I'm not a learned student of history. Why is it that so many other countries were able to abolish slavery without resorting to a Civil war that took hundreds of thousands of lives? Wasn't there an economic way to abolish slavery, even if it took just a little bit longer? I'm sure someone has asked this before during the many heated Civil war debates, but I've never heard what the answer is.
What's the connection to today?
Perhaps I misunderstood your question. I thought you were curious how the 'Civil War' connects with today.
So did Gibson, if you count the fictional Southern Revolutionary War general in "The Patriot". Hey, Marty "Esteban" Sheen played R.E. Lee, FWIW.
