In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
trencherman \TREN-chuhr-muhn\ noun : A hearty eater.
Example sentences:
Expecting that the experience would be too exciting for him to find time to eat, we were amazed to watch him consume a trencherman's breakfast, scarfing down French toast like it was going out of style.
-- Sheila Rothenberg, "Disney Bridges the Generation Gap", USA Today, March, 2001
In the space of the last five years, he fearlessly gained 40 pounds, displaying a trencherman's appetite for life and an admirable disdain for cardiologists and Surgeon Generals whining about moderation.
-- Martin Lewis, "Comb Back, Big Hair - All Is Forgiven", Time, December 23, 2000
Etymology:
Trencherman is from trencher, "a wooden board or platter on which food is served or carved" (from Medieval French trencheoir, from Old French trenchier, "to cut," from Latin truncare, "to lop off, to shorten by cutting") + man. It is related to trench, "a hole cut into the ground."
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

A Blessed Thanksgiving to All!
Welcome to WFTD!
too much of a trencherman since yesterday...I approach my scale with trepredation....
yunz are running FOOLS! congrats to you and Gman. xshub brought me coffee and promptly fell back to sleep on the couch. the tables were both set by xsbrownie, food is ready cook. Omigosh, i had to wake him up to go get the turkey, i almost forgot he needed to go get that!
The term a square meal is related to our WFTD. During the Age of Sail, meals were served on square wooden plates descended from trenchers. Hence the term, a square meal. The term refers to the plate and not the shape of the food or the nutritional balance of the meal.

Here is my proof that I eat like a Trencherman.

Very good, NNB!
Happy Turkey Day!!!
First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
I do have a question about today's WFD. Is it gender specific? I inquire only because it would be a perfect description of Rosie O'Donnell. Then again, I don't know if Rosie is gender specific?!?!:)
God bless,
EODGUY
I could have used some apple butter ...
Just kidding! You and your family have a great day, Gabz!

Good WFTD!
I just remembered something I forgot.]
The other day I got a coupon in the mail from Kraft to try their new ready to eat cheesecake filling for free (up to $5.24)
Oh well, there's always the weekend.......but free is free as far as I'm concerned :)
LOL!!!
I could have used some apple butter myself.
But all is not lost. My SIL said she will be down before Christmas and will bring me apples from the orchard near her!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
A for you. Avoid the scale until spring.
Enjoy your meal and company! A for you.
We'll have a nice round meal here served on round plates. I cannot say what shape we'll take afterwards, but it had better not be round! I made a new recipe for buttermilk pie this year and it smells delicious.
A+ NNB! Feast away!
Well, look who the turkey dragged in! Our old friend EODguy! Very few words in this room are gender specific, so you get an A. I hope you and the family have a wonderful day.
Cool toy! A+ for you!
No labwork until after the holidays. A+ for you!
Here it is...dinner is just about done, and I snacked so much at my regular lunch time that I don't know if I'll really be able to eat....fate of being on a diet too long...
Thankis for opening a classroom-I have a little time till company arrives-
Among X42's many vices was
The tendency to eat too much
But also he tended to overindulge
In women, liquor and such
The surfeit of greasy cheeseburgers
Was an artery clogging curse
But if he'd brought Hill an STD
It would have been much worse
Instead of just having a bypass
He'd have probably lost his life-
A trencherman of some note who
Was done in by his shrew of a wife
The turkey is on the smoker, corn on the cob is cooking, dressing is made, salad and biscuits are made and all that is left to do is steam the cauliflower, finish the gravy and serve dinner.
I've never had buttermilk pie-will you share the recipe when you have time?
Thank You, I had a grand time.
I was good today and I did not eat like a trnecherman. This is important since I did eat like a trncherman last week. Fortunately, I work with a scale.
Happy Thanksgiving to you.
Since this was also my Hebrew birthday (3 Kislev) I had friends over and we acted like total trenchermen.
Burp.
Thank you for thread ..!
Beat da hell outa tu!
Well I have enough turkey and trimmings for another meal for hubby and I, but it is all in the freezer and I'm grilling steaks for dinner this evening-I can't abide the thought of turkey two days in a row, especially after I smelled it for hours on end while it was on the smoker.
We avoided going to the city today because of the shopping frenzy traffic and made do with the Home Depot and grocery store in Boerne, where there are no malls for what few things we needed...
the boys went to a Caps game, the girls and xsSIL and i are ordering pizza for dinner. we had Tgiving leftovers for lunch today, i can have it more than one day in a row but not more than once a day.
turkey 2 days in a row never bothers me! We had hot open turkey sandwiches for dinner, using stuffing instead of sliced bread.
I did not leave the confines of my house or yard today. I did do some yard work as it was a gorgeous day. Then I pulled out fabric I had bought to make curtains for the living room. I got them cut and pinned, and then realized that I have no brown thread. OK, not to worry, I'll just pull out the fabric for the family rooms curtains. Lo and behold, I found a major flaw in the fabric and so my pattern won't work. Back to the drawing board to create a different pattern, which I did.......but by that time I was far too frustrated to dare even think about cutting fabric. next I went to do a quick XS project I have, and low and behold, I have the wrong size waste canvas.....so back in the box that went, and I pulled out my crochetting.
Apparently today was not my day to be "crafty." SIGH, I guess I really should stick to cooking :)
WE DID IT! WHOOOP!!!
A+, your meal sounded great too. I'd be glad to send you my buttermilk pie recipe this weekend. I use a graham cracker crust because no one here likes regular piecrust.
Good one, Siggy. A for you. I usually work against a scale.
Is that different from your natal day?
Good grief-it sounds as if a craft gremlin got into your house!
