Word For The Day, Happy Thanksgiving, November 23, 2006 - trencherman
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | November 23, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 11/23/2006 8:17:10 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

trencherman \TREN-chuhr-muhn\ noun : A hearty eater.

Example sentences:
Expecting that the experience would be too exciting for him to find time to eat, we were amazed to watch him consume a trencherman's breakfast, scarfing down French toast like it was going out of style.
-- Sheila Rothenberg, "Disney Bridges the Generation Gap", USA Today, March, 2001

In the space of the last five years, he fearlessly gained 40 pounds, displaying a trencherman's appetite for life and an admirable disdain for cardiologists and Surgeon Generals whining about moderation.
-- Martin Lewis, "Comb Back, Big Hair - All Is Forgiven", Time, December 23, 2000

Etymology:
Trencherman is from trencher, "a wooden board or platter on which food is served or carved" (from Medieval French trencheoir, from Old French trenchier, "to cut," from Latin truncare, "to lop off, to shorten by cutting") + man. It is related to trench, "a hole cut into the ground."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Same to you! Amazingly we shaved another minute and a half off our previous times in this morning's race. I prefer my son's training method. He doesn't run every day or even every week and goes out on fun runs beating his last record every time.

Happy Thanksgiving day to all y'all.

The term a square meal is related to our WFTD. During the Age of Sail, meals were served on square wooden plates descended from trenchers. Hence the term, a square meal. The term refers to the plate and not the shape of the food or the nutritional balance of the meal.

Good Morning!

Here is my proof that I eat like a Trencherman.

I Et Too Much!

I et too much, and I know it’s a sin,
But I couldn’t resist, and I’ve done it agin.
It’s a little light eating, ‘cause turkeys are birds,
I was quite justified when I went back for thirds.

To make it all healthy, and to balance the plate,
I added some vegetables to the meat that I ate.
There were so many entrées, I just couldn’t stop,
I’m just planning ahead for some weight I may drop.

That lean times are coming’s more certain each day,
So I’m just getting ready in my own special way.
Such a dream of a meal that I thought of a pinch,
To be sure of my waking -- now I can’t move an inch!

And now I look out at the carnage I’ve wrought,
I wonder what came of the hunger I brought,
It all was so good and I sampled each dish,
A meal such as this seemed to answer my wish.

So now I must rest and prepare for what’s next,
The “raid of the ‘fridge” on some subtle pretext!
I’ll be settling down for a good Winter’s snooze,
And I need to be ready in case hunger renews.

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

I do have a question about today's WFD. Is it gender specific? I inquire only because it would be a perfect description of Rosie O'Donnell. Then again, I don't know if Rosie is gender specific?!?!:)

God bless,

EODGUY

For many the year a trencherman I've been
But lately, ole Doc said "That's a sin."
My cholesterol count was up but now may be down
So finally a day for this gourmand to really get around...

We'll have a nice round meal here served on round plates. I cannot say what shape we'll take afterwards, but it had better not be round! I made a new recipe for buttermilk pie this year and it smells delicious.

Thankis for opening a classroom-I have a little time till company arrives-

Among X42's many vices was
The tendency to eat too much
But also he tended to overindulge
In women, liquor and such

The surfeit of greasy cheeseburgers
Was an artery clogging curse
But if he'd brought Hill an STD
It would have been much worse

Instead of just having a bypass
He'd have probably lost his life-
A trencherman of some note who
Was done in by his shrew of a wife

The turkey is on the smoker, corn on the cob is cooking, dressing is made, salad and biscuits are made and all that is left to do is steam the cauliflower, finish the gravy and serve dinner.

"trencherman \TREN-chuhr-muhn\ noun : A hearty eater.
Syn. : Kennedy"

I was good today and I did not eat like a trnecherman. This is important since I did eat like a trncherman last week. Fortunately, I work with a scale.

Well I have enough turkey and trimmings for another meal for hubby and I, but it is all in the freezer and I'm grilling steaks for dinner this evening-I can't abide the thought of turkey two days in a row, especially after I smelled it for hours on end while it was on the smoker.

We avoided going to the city today because of the shopping frenzy traffic and made do with the Home Depot and grocery store in Boerne, where there are no malls for what few things we needed...

turkey 2 days in a row never bothers me! We had hot open turkey sandwiches for dinner, using stuffing instead of sliced bread.

I did not leave the confines of my house or yard today. I did do some yard work as it was a gorgeous day. Then I pulled out fabric I had bought to make curtains for the living room. I got them cut and pinned, and then realized that I have no brown thread. OK, not to worry, I'll just pull out the fabric for the family rooms curtains. Lo and behold, I found a major flaw in the fabric and so my pattern won't work. Back to the drawing board to create a different pattern, which I did.......but by that time I was far too frustrated to dare even think about cutting fabric. next I went to do a quick XS project I have, and low and behold, I have the wrong size waste canvas.....so back in the box that went, and I pulled out my crochetting.

Apparently today was not my day to be "crafty." SIGH, I guess I really should stick to cooking :)
