A federal marshal escorts Danny Dean Slick (right), 27, of Charles City, from the federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids on Monday after Slick pleaded guilty to lying in July 2005 to FBI agents investigating the disappearance of 5-year-old Evelyn Miller, who was found murdered days later.
Danny Dean Slick, 27, faces up to five years in prison for giving fictitious and fraudulent statements in July 2005. Slicks sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 20 in U.S. District Court in Sioux City.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Berry said Slick reached a plea deal in which he will not be prosecuted for the first of two counts of misleading authorities. Berry said Slicks plea agreement contains a cooperation provision.
Slick, wearing a navy blue prison jump suit, spoke quietly and with few words on Monday, responding to U.S. Magistrate Judge John Jarveys questions with yes and no answers.
Slick was indicted and arrested in June, but released after pleading not guilty. He has been incarcerated since he was arrested again in August for violating terms of his release.
Family members said they were hopeful information in the 13-page, sealed plea document could bring authorities closer to arresting Evelyns killer.
There has to be a reason for them to have sealed it, said Brandi Hoffmann of Des Moines, who is Evelyns aunt. I dont think Dan Slick personally killed Evelyn, but I think he knows who did and what happened to her.
Evelyns stepmother, Lindsey Christie of Waterloo, and Hoffmanns mother, Sandy Kuykendall of Floyd, also sat through the approximately 20-minute hearing.
Court documents say Slick changed his story and tried to mislead FBI agents when they interviewed him at his Charles City residence on July 3, 2005.
According to Slicks indictment, he initially told agents his roommate Randy Patrie, 33, was at their Charles City apartment for all but 10-15 minutes on July 1, 2005, after they stopped at Evelyns apartment to see her mothers fiance at about 2:30 a.m., hours before she was reported missing.
In a second interview, the indictment said, Slick reported Patrie was gone for several hours and said Patrie said the next day that he went to get drugs from an acquaintance named Porky.
Slick admitted he lied to agents when he claimed to not know Porkys name or address.
Special Agent Jim Wertz of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, who is the lead investigator on Evelyns case, and FBI Special Agent Randy Van Gent also attended Slicks hearing.

I hope there will be justice for little Evelyn. Such a sad story.
Sorry, I saw your title and read Slick as meaning Bill Clinton. Wow.
Geez, I though clinton got bagged on another one.
I did too.
LOL!! I thought the same thing! Too funny, Clinton has at least one lagacy.
I meant legacy. It is a "lagacy" in the deep south, however, especially in Arkansas. Just joking, you Razorbacks! LOL!
I somehow failed to hear about this. I don't watch much t.v. and I thought the timeline above might help any other FReepers like me.
It looks to me like the fiance is involved and has a history of at least 3 years of child porn.
Yep - this thread is gonna get a lot of "views"...
When I first read the headline and saw Slick admitted to lying, I thought it would be about Bill Clinton.
After a quick glance I thought this thread was something about Slick Willie. Well, it could happen!
I saw the headline and thought the same thing. I mean... didn't a couple of his neighbors get shot the other day. I thought that was it. LOL.
Exactly. Anything that Slick did is sealed and locked up and thrown in the ocean. He will never be prosecuted for anything.
WoW I thought at first "Slick" referred to WJC!!!!
I thought you were talking about Clinton.
Oh, really? /sarc
1st thought was "Miller on clinton body count list?"
