COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A 14-year-old boy who was throwing eggs at cars along with two other teenagers was shot and killed by someone who had been in a sport-utility vehicle that was hit, police said.
Danny Crawford was killed by a gunshot wound to his upper body, Franklin County Coroner Brad Lewis said. He died in an alley on the city's west side early Saturday, authorities said.
The teens were throwing eggs at cars when an SUV that was struck chased them, Detective Tim Huston said. The vehicle stopped and several gunshots were fired, he said.
Police were looking for the shooter, who fled in the SUV, Sgt. Dana Norman said. The SUV believed to be involved was found a short time later near where Crawford died.
The other teens were not hurt, police said.
Another reason to ban SUVs.
SUVs carry guns now?
Where do I get this option?
I suppose the SUV fired the gun too.
Never bring eggs to a SUV gunfight.
Some body was a good shot.
Exactly the same thing that happened here in Indiana this year. I was amazed at the number of people who said the shooter had every right to kill the kid.
I guess "SUV's" don't have actual drivers anymore. Must have been one of those new stealth models.
Anyone who fires a gun in anger, while aiming at others has no respect for others, no sense of the potential consequences of their actions, and no sense of personal responsibility.
This is a cultural problem which can only be solved by the community which is afflicted.
No, the trigger was pulled by a Pit Bull.
I would never egg on a SUV
I agree with the general sentiments in your statements. However, it appears you are equating the kid throwing eggs to a murder.
I don't think these crimes are equivalent in any way.
I'm not really trying to equate them. But I am pointing out that actions like these arise from people with damaged souls. I think the egg thrower and the shooter had a lot in common. They weren't raised right. The shooter's mistake was more egregious, but did not differ in kind from the mistake made by the deceased.
Abandoned to be reported stolen as an alibi for the owner or actually stolen and the kids picked the wrong vehicle to mess with? I wonder. The time of the incident wasn't stated but I wonder if mom knew where her son was? Note I left off dad ... statistically accurate (hey, if the RATs use that as a justification for overturning a recount, why can't I use it for commentary?)
Maybe an egg fell on one of Putin's spy SUVs, or the SUV of a mafiosa, or the SUV of Billy Jeff, or the the Bin Laden family Escalade ...I'm just trying to help police understand who would seek such revenge on a teen in this world.
In California to throw any object at a moving vehicle is a felony. Where would the bleeding hearts be if the SUV driver had swerved his vehicle because he was surprised and ran over and killed another innocent child. That young adult's actions had consequences. Maybe he'd still be around today if his parents would have raised him to respect the law and other people's property. No sorrow here.
The boy said the driver stopped the SUV, got out and began to run after them. The boy said while he ran through one back yard, Danny found himself trapped in the alley.
He said when he got to his house near Terrace Avenue, he heard six shots.
Dannys house is about a mile from the alley where he was shot. A woman who answered the door at the house yesterday said Dannys father did not want to comment.
Sgt. Dana Norman said the driver fled in the SUV. Police located the vehicle a short time later nearby on Burgess Avenue.
Looks like the guy who was hit with the egg really wanted his revenge.
I wouldn't shot.I'd just stop, open the door and let my Shepherds out of the car. They are trained to return to me in 2 minutes or less.
There's one of those right here, now.
The a**hole who wrote post #17.
SUV manufacturers know that these vehicles are coming into the hands of criminals.
There is no right to own these assault vehicles!
Where are the common sense SUV laws?
Now Danny won't get to see the Buckeyes play for the National Championship.
An "asymmetrical conflict."
Does that include idiots flipping lighted cigarettes out of their windows that hit other vehicles? Some truckers seem to love to do that.
A similar event occured last year as well. Watch, a certain cadre of FReepers will revel in the shooting and call it justified.
Need to control these high capacity egg cartons. No one needs to eat eighteen eggs at time.
I'm speculating here, but I'm getting the sneaky feeling that the owner of the SUV was a homeboy, and egging his ride constituted a "diss," which is a capital crime in the urban jungle.
Pure bull sh&* Doctor Phil.
Based on the majority of responses here, it would seem that the right of juvenile delinquents to throw objects into moving traffic without consequences has become a conservative value.
I disagree. You unnecessarily initiate a physical confrontation, you don't get any sympathy from me if it escalates into more than you bargained for.
Never throw eggs at Gold Edition Escalades.
How do you justify the murder? Because the kid did something stupid? 95% of adults will say they did stupid things as teenagers, and the other 5% are liars. What reward would you give the murderer? A Congressional Gold Medal? A Senate seat? A Nobel prize?
In addition, this is very irresponsible firearms use. Guns are for self-defense, not for getting petty revenge against kids who piss you off.
I can't believe that you are capable of having any compassion for your hypothetical "another innocent child" when you feel no sorrow about this happening. You are nothing more than a cold-blooded sadist who has no respect for human life.
I definitely agree that there should be consequences. Not sure if murder should be one of them especially when there was no loss of life or limb in this case.
If this kid had thrown this object and the action had resulted in the death of a person, I would have joined you in calling for his head.
Not in this case though.
Shooting wasn't justified. Maybe some kind of good can come from this incident in that children can be taught from it that actions have consequences & they aren't always what you hope they will be.
If parents would use this story to illustrate that when you trespass on, or vandalize someone else's property - you might just be stirring up a hornet's nest. Obviously, when these vandals threw the eggs, they were hoping to get a reaction from the driver - they got a lot more than they bargained for.
Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for.
Throwing objects into moving traffic is needlessly rolling the dice on killing an innocent party, no different than driving drunk or firing a rifle into the air in a developed area.
Waiting until you have a victim before doing something about the offender is choosing to ruin two lives later instead of one now. Bad exchange.
I just explained to my kids that people throw things to be funny. My brother was caught and punished for throwing snowballs at cars on a major highway--keyword is punished--by Dad. I told my kids that my brother was lucky no one was hurt, including him.
You don't who you are dealing with in life, be it at a store, an overpass, an alley, or even in cyberspace. Best to stay away from trouble.
Then I told them that this kid didn't think his actions would lead to his death.
It's a powerful lesson. A lesson I know is not taught anymore by virtue of this horrible story.
I thought protecting the life of a child was a conservative value.
If a kid eggs your car, confronting him and hauling him off to his parents, or maybe calling the police, might be more constructive ways to deal with the situation than murder. But hey, who am I to talk? I'm just expressing the opinion of someone who respects human life.
Hopefully, protecting the life of unborn children is still a conservative value, because children's lives after they're born don't seem to mean much to some of these so-called "conservatives."
The problem here is that we expect the auto driver to magically know it is just an egg or not some sort of bump/rob scam.
You take your plaintiff as you find him.
There have been many cases where road debris kills people.
Of course we have to wonder why the SUV was abandoned since it is so easy to track the owners down.
Kids do stupid things, but apparently some-one more stupid than kids do stupid things.
There never has been and, there will never be an SUV worth the life of a child.
How can some-one be so stupid? Before you answer, if you have a child this age, look at them real good, this could have been your child.
The part about the SUV is totally irrelevant. The reporter who wrote that is an ass.
As for the slain part, doesn't seem legal to me, but when you are in a car and someone throws things at it you don't know if they are throwing eggs or rocks. So if you think that they are attacking you you have the right to repel them with deadly force. But taking revenge is not legal.
"A's" don't ping people they are talking about. That is an FR unwritten rule.
Also, while traveling down our local highway, I had an egg thrown from an overpass at my truck. It hit mostly square down the center of the windshield and cracked my windshield. It is a wonder it didn't go through the windshield and kill me (no passengers were with me).
Egg throwing can kill... and if I could of got to them, I am not sure what I would of done with those kids (I assume they were kids).
Apparently you guys haven't ever been hit by an egg while operating a motorcycle, with your girlfriend/boyfriend hanging on behind you.
This happened to me a while back and when something hits you and explodes while you're driving 45 mph, you and whoever is with you (if anyone) are likely to be shaken.
I am fortunate to not have lost control and caused an accident.
When it happens to you, it feels like attempted murder, trust me.
Bleeding heart stupidity lies at the center of many of todays societal ills.
Did this kid deserve to be shot and killed? No. Did this SUV owners deserve to have his vehicle damaged? No. Who initiated the conflict? The kid. Ergo, the kid is 100% at fault for what happened to his stupid self...
Darwin wins again...
A motorcycle wasn't involved in this. If one had been the case may have been different.
I have a hard time believing you respect human life if you're defending someone who would take yours (perhaps not intentionally) in a heartbeat.
So now in order for their to be a problem with egg-throwing, the vehicle has to be a motorcycle? LOL.
To kill him? No.
To take woeful revenge against him in some form? Absolutely. That should not be a crime.
