Penalty for unwrapping gifts early: Arrest (12-year old arrested for opening a Christmas gift early)

A mother convinced Rock Hill police to arrest her 12-year-old son after he unwrapped a Christmas present early. The boy's great-grandmother had specifically told him not to open his Nintendo Game Boy Advance, which she had wrapped and placed beneath the Christmas tree, according to a police report.

But on Sunday morning, she found the box of the popular handheld game console unwrapped and opened. When the boy's 27-year-old mother heard about the opened gift, she called police. ...

When the mother threatened to call the police, the boy went into his room and got the Game Boy, the report stated. She called the police anyway.

Two Rock Hill police officers responded to the home and charged the boy with petty larceny. He was charged as a juvenile and released the same day, said police spokesman Lt. Jerry Waldrop, who added the boy was never held at the jail.

"We wouldn't hold a 12-year-old," he said. ...

On Monday night, the mother said she had her son arrested because she didn't know what else to do.

Thank God the police were using their tax payer funded time on duty in an important swat operation like this, wouldn't want them wasting their time arresting drug dealers, rapists, illegal immigrants and other unimportant stuff !!!

And she got him a Nintendo??

That's the first thing I noticed also. Gee, I wonder why the kid doesn't listen to her? (eye roll)

Sounds like a mentally ill woman. How horrible to have such a mother.

What the heck was this family thinking when they decided to reward this little punk with a Nintendo! Idiots!

For those pointing out her age of giving birth, I want to point out that many would be pointing out how girls in the same age range 13-15 would be doing the right thing not to have an abortion.

The self-righteous hypocrisy is thick in here today - especially when no one here knows what the circumstances of this pregnancy were.

The boy's great-grandmother had specifically told him not to open his Nintendo Game Boy Advance.

Well I guess that boy took the name of this product a little too literally.

Ok, I was expecting something like: "I had him arrested to teach him a lesson, or something parental-like." But, "...she didn't know what else to do?????"

To be fair, I did edit out this line for the excerpt: "She [his mother] hoped the arrest would be a wake-up call for him."

When I saw "Lancaster" and "York County" I thought it was Pennsylvania. I wish the on-line newspapers would be more up-front about their locations. Sometimes it's hard to tell where the story is referring to.

When Xena's Sibs and I were small thangs, my sister (three or four at the time) went missing on Christmas morning.

We found her asleep under the tree, wrapped up in the sheet Santa used to hide our presents under.

The kid was incorrigible.

The next year, a couple weeks before Christmas, without yet technically knowing how to read, she figured out which presents had her name on 'em, and unwrapped them with what she felt was great finesse. Unfortunately for her, her definition of "finesse" was to only tear off half the wrapping paper.

Apparently no one has explained to this Mother of the Year candidate the concept of "negative attention."

Dayum! Your mom could have given lessons to mine. With my terminally nosy little sister, the best Xena's Mom could do was take the presents over to my grandparents' and hide them in the back of my grandfather's closet.
