PALMDALE - Eugena Washington, a 22-year-old Palmdale High School graduate, managed to survive 11 episodes of "America's Next Top Model," but ultimately was defeated in her bid for the crown on Wednesday night's season finale of the reality show.
As one of three remaining competitors, she was the first to be eliminated. The judges praised her natural talent but said she didn't show enough personality or drive to earn the "Top Model" title.
"I just wish my performance spoke for itself," Washington said, after host Tyra Banks announced her elimination. "I am pretty disappointed, disappointed that I didn't explain myself better."
In the end it was Fargo, N.D., photographer CariDee English who went home with the grand prize - a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, a deal with Elite Model Management and a photo on the cover of Seventeen Magazine.
Throughout the seventh season of "Top Model," which was taped in May and June, Washington competed against 12 other contestants as they learned to master complicated catwalks, physical fitness, fashion photo shoots and publicity skills while under surveillance 24 hours a day.
Each week one contestant was eliminated after a collective critique session with a panel of judges, which included Banks, former model Twiggy, runway expert J. Alexander, photographer Nigel Barker and various guests.
She dominated in several of the show's competitive challenges, however, demonstrating grace under pressure when required to bend her body into "extreme poses," film a commercial in Catalan or learn a flamenco dance.
"I don't like to be ordinary," she said in a 2002 interview for the Valley Press' Future Leaders section. "I like to go above and beyond. Being unique is what I try to do."

Thank you, that was most civilized of you.
She could use a bacon double cheeseburger, a beer, and a night with me.
Go for it. :-)
I wish her all the luck.
Is there anything but bone and skin on those arms?
