Time for a new Free Republic Folding@home thread.
Our Free Republic team of 416 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 57th place (with 1,032 active CPUs - 92,150 completed Work Units and 18.0 million points).
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 20+ folding threads)
Welcome and PLEASE ask question so that your folding experience is as pleasant as possible.
A Happy New Year to all current and future folders.
And for those souls who are finished with pro football (well, maybe paid amatuerish football), we can all get onto the business of naking our computers fold as fast as possible!
Here's to raw nakey folding power!!!!!
Hurray,, first day of folding and have about 4,600 frames so far if I am reading this thing right...Small start, but feel like I am doing SOMETHING.
How does it work?: You download a safe, tested program (see link below) that is certified by Stanford University. It gets work from Stanford, runs calculations using your spare computer power, and sends the results back to the University.
Is it safe? Yes! Folding@Home rarely effects computer performance in any way and won't compromise your privacy in any way. It only uses the computing power you aren't using so it doesn't slow down other programs.
How do I get started folding for Team FreeRepublic?:
1.) Download the folding program from Stanford University's folding download page (Folding@home Client Download). Type in your desired username.
2.) Type in 36120 for the team number. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - if you get the number wrong, you won't be folding for team FreeRepublic!
3.) The third question asks, "Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service?" - We recommend you answer YES. Otherwise you will have to manually start the program after every reboot.
How can my computer help? Even if they were given exclusive access to all of the world's supercomputers, Stanford still wouldn't have as much processing power as they get from the supercluster of people's desktop systems Folding@home relies on. Modern supercomputers are essentially a cluster of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. But Stanford needed the power of hundreds of thousands of processors, not just hundreds.
There's no reason to not get involved! It's free, easy, and you can know you're helping every minute without lifting a finger.

New Folding thread.
Please tell your friends that they can make a difference with F@H!
17+ million folding points is a ton'o-points. Now the climb is steeper.
If you're interested in tracking your folding machine(s) over the web, please Freepmail me.
Available features include:
Are you running F@H as a GUI, with the little red flower in the system tray, or are you running F@H as a console?
TB
The GUI. I like it as my screen saver. Is the console faster?
The console is faster, and if you use a login screen (different names for each user) then the console is the way to go.
If your system is fast enough, you can run both like I do.
AMD Sempron 3000+ and 768 MB RAM are fast enough that I can run a console in the background all the time.
I keep a GUI F@H running as the screensaver, so I can see progress and show off to my family and friends what is really meant by "folding proteins". You would be surprised by the wide-eyed looks that I get when my wife mentions that I can spend all night folding proteins on the Internet.
I keep a shortcut to the GUI folder so I can restart the GUI F@H. It needs to be turned off for many games that used OpenGL. That is purely a M$ problem.
I can count on 100 - 150 ppd off this system between both F@H cores. I started running both when the kids would reboot and leave the system at the login prompt - the GUI would never start until someone logged in.
We will pass one or two teams in January. That will leave only 55 teams to catch.
We consistently add 6 to 8 new folders every month, which about replaces those that quit folding or get banned from FR.
If we can grow to about 1,500 active systems, or if we can increase the ppd average of current folders then we will be able to settle well into the top 25 of all team worldwide.
Of course there is the scary chance that the DUmmies could fire up again and catch us like they have always threatened, but ...
Nahh. No chance for those demented losers.

Team Free Republic: Folding to cure Liberalism.
Looking for 80,000 points BUMP!
Pretty neat.
Remember the days when no one had even hit 100,000 points? We have 24 folks that already have that many points and four more that will join them in a week:
smith288............ 99,585
zeugma ............. 98,938
MrBlueSky2005...98,682
greenbo............ 98,424
You will make it to 100,000 points by Feb, it looks like.
Who was the first to hit 100,000 points? Klutz? Malsua?
Well, Happy Saddam-less New Year, and thanks for the Folding ping.
Both of my machines are keeping fairly steady running the 5.02 console -- 'bout time to upgrade the 5.03, I guess. The offic box has had a couple of instances where it failed to connect to the assignment server; had to stop/restart it to make it happy again.
I broke into our Top 100 over the Christmas Holidays and it looks like I'll be in the top 90 in less than 2 weeks.
Nice to see more folks joining up; it's worth noting that, even if you get yourself banned from FR, it doesn't kill off your machine's work for F@H. It's a real shame to see people quit folding just because they get excommunicated by JR & the Mods. I'd hope that they're just changing their team number, not quitting altogether.
That's good to know....encase. lol
I didn't research it, but my money is on Klutz.
Klutz was first to 100,000.
In looking at the old threads I came across a few gems.
Bush_Democrat, did you ever get that system running for your son in the Peace Corp, and if so, is it still running for The Gipper?
Well, he's home from the Peace Corps finally, and is up in Santa Cruz now, the bastion of liberalism, getting his Masters in Mathematics. I'm planning on getting a hold of his laptop when he comes home this summer and try and 'borg it when he's not looking....
My other laptop is dead right now, so I'm choking along with only 3 'puters going right now, but I've got another two or so I'm trying to bring on board. I'm tired of seeing my standing fall....
I had an interesting run-in with a computer customer that was convinced that Bush is the anti-Christ or something similar. He was even more offensive toward Bush I and Reagan.
I bit my tongue, let him lecture and cleaned off his system of the spyware that he loaded on. "Gee, how did that get there? Must have been fishhooked!"
I loaded on a piece of protective software that he must never touch and must let run all night at least once a week.
Good ole' F@H Antivirus. 36120 is the password. Jim only contributed for about 6 months, but I sure enjoyed seeing his points post.
I do not like to borg (too much), but some liberal nuts deserve to find a cure to keep the Reagans of the world functioning longer.
HA!!!!!!!!
He always started off conversations as a conservative but only denigrated Republicans. Of course, in Texas, he may have been mad at the existing power structure of local politics.
There are some customers that I don't mind if they find a new geek. He is certainly one of them.
LOL! My son got a new gaming computer. While he was out one day, I loaded FAH console version on it. He has no clue that it's there. His processor [the fastest of my 3] is the reason that I'm going to make it into the top 100. He's gaming away in there right now.
Especially for gaming computers, use the F@H console 5.04, and have it launch as a service.
Because it does not present any graphics there is little chance of F@H conflicting any game. F@H runs in the background, and drops out if any games start up.
You've done good!
I have to stop my console service before running madden because for some reason, it keeps minimizing Madden to the desktop until I NET STOP the folding. I just made a BAT file to net stop it, then another to start it.
I haven't had any games that couldn't coexist, but I don't have every game!
Is Madden known as a game that takes all the horsepower of a computer to run smoothly?
Thanks for the info!
Takes all of mine, thats fersher'
There is a bug (reported to F@H by me, et al.) in the way that the new SMP beta client (or the projects assigned to it) are reporting status in the unitinfo.txt file. This is causing problems with FAHMonitor's ability to match the WU with the official WU entry, so that points aren't being tallied/reported correctly by FAHMonitor-- and, presumably, other third-party reporting apps.
Until Stanford fixes the problem, please let me know the project number of the SMP WU (found in the FAHLog.txt file) as soon as your machine finishes it, and I'll correct the history entries manually... assuming you even care about this! ;-)
Thanks for your patience!
The project name usually consists of a number and a name, and is reported in the unitinfo.txt file like this:
Current Work Unit ----------------- Name: p2124_lambda_5way_melt_4_10011 Download time: January 2 01:45:46 Due time: April 22 01:45:46 Progress: 93% [|||||||||_]Instead, for the new SMP WUs, only the name is being reported-- and often isn't even matching the official entry.
Current Work Unit ----------------- Name: SMP-nsv-03 Tag: - Download time: January 8 19:43:05 Due time: January 10 19:43:05 Progress: 88% [||||||||__]In this particular case, the name matches three different entries, with two different point values.
The results from your first folding haven't shown up on the donor list yet.
Can you look into your FAH folder, open up "unitinfo.txt" and copy the text here?
I'll bet that you are nearly finished, but I want to be sure that you are able to upload results.
My unitinfo.txt looks like this:
Current Work Unit
Congrats to davemaher for hitting 300,000 points!
Egon, are you completing the SMP beta clients that are coming your way? How have the new clients affected your daily point totals?
Well, so much for raw, nakey spell check.
memo to self: spell chick even on short posts
Good catch!
Heh. Spell Chick.
My brother just hooked up his handy-dandy new Mac notebook (see "Micromol" under my FAHMonitor page), and downloaded the SMP beta client. It's set to automatically only pick up the new SMP work units.
He's screaming through them at the rate of one every 24 hours or so. Each are worth between 590 and 716 points. I'm a very happy folder!
On the flip-side: I'm convinced that the p1496 and p212x projects are the scourge of the devil. My 24-hour averages have plummeted lately.
This makes josephw happy, but doesn't really do that much for my self-esteem!
A FAHMonitor/SMP update:
I've put in a work-around to help deal with the bug in the SMP client (or projects).
If you give me the WU number from your FAHLog.txt files, I can update the projects/history on the fly now.
Of course, in looking at the FAHMonitor history and server records to date, I'm talking to a group of one: me!
Most of mine are 212x WUs. Did you notice I got nothing yesterday. Getting harder and harder to pass by my fellow freepers.
However, I do have a new goal. To be among the top 5000 contributors.
I may be able to stave you off a bit longer, with some help from my brother and a couple of his recent acquisitions-- but it won't last forever!
One advantage to the current round of work units is that everyone is equally dinged. Also, it may take a while to complete them, but I had almost 2,400 points on 6 WUs yesterday. It feels good when they finally post.
Was it JCEccles that is out of the country for a while? It seems that he should be back before too long.
You two guys are killing me !!!! :)
I'm the jam in a sandwich, that's about to get squashed !!
I advise you both to shut your computers down for about a month. I think that would be best for all involved. Especially me !!! LOL
Congrats to our newest folder!
It took a bit but the points posted,

Here is a request from the folding forums for a Linux SMP monitor.
Might be fun to read about someone elses' travails for a bit.
Heh. Worried about being squirted out the bottom?
Yeah, Linux is a challenge with whatever route you choose. The problem is: there isn't really any native scripting (to the level required for our purposes).
I'm debating opening up the FAHMonitor to the general folding community. I guess close to a year of Beta is likely sufficient?
On a related note: Turns out, Macs can be included in the FAHMonitor by pretty much using the Linux instructions and script. My brother just added his to my "fold", as it were.
Well, how is folding going for ya'll?
Can you tell me who, on the team, is a Linux person? I installed FAH in my Kubuntu OS yesterday, and it only seems to be running at 80% of the processor by default, leaving about 15% idle. I'd like to get that up to 90%. I'm such a newbie at Linux, I don't know how to go back into settings with a cosole. ~sigh~
Hey, we are all glad that you have the new Folding@Home SMP client running now, but can you back it off just a bit? ;}
Is this increase in production from the SMP client, or have you borged a server farm as well?
Look here for info on Linux console setup:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/console-userguide.html
Here is a FAH Forum discussion on Ubuntu, same question:
http://forum.folding-community.org/ftopic17339.html
Here is a discussion on slowing down the client, along with a link to a Linux site:
http://forum.folding-community.org/ftopic16639.html
Hope that this helps. My Linux skills are pretty limited.
Woohoo! All your folds are belong to us!
Is this increase in production from the SMP client, or have you borged a server farm as well?
My brother's damned two Macs (with SMP) are outperforming my remaining 11 machines by themselves!
They're averaging 1350 ppd. I believe, based on information on the F@H site, that at least part of the high points values on the SMP projects are bonuses for participating in the beta phase. I'm not sure how much (if any) the point values will drop once they go "production" with them.
In the meantime, I've managed to stave off Joesphw for awhile, and I'm breathing up LSimpson's tailpipe for the #8 slot-- a spot I never thought I had a chance to reach.
I think you're relatively safe, though-- unless I find a collection of Macs sitting idle somewhere...
