A 62-year-old woman known as the "Black Widow" is being held in a North Carolina jail on $1.5 million bond for relatively petty charges, while police race to unravel a web of mysteries — including the deaths of her two husbands and a female "best friend" — before time runs out and "she's outta here."

Wow, what a tale! How did she get away with her scams for so long without being caught? After all, she was the last person to be seen with many of the victims.

Yeah, no kidding. It's amazing how some murders are solved quickly and some aren't. Probably lazy investigators.

Looks like my aunt. She killed her husband... but it took her 40 years.

There are so many of these stories. Most of the women don't murder the husbands though, they just take them for all they're worth.

I think many men make choices and decisions based upon something I have dubbed "the penile doppler effect."

Not necessarily wives. Girlfriends, too.

When news broke that the infamous “Black Widow” had been caught after allegedly scamming an elderly North Carolina woman, there was another woman who wasn't shocked by revelations of Sandra Camille Powers' methods of manipulation and deceit. Sandy Hodgins had been through it herself. The 60-year-old South Carolina bookkeeper told FOXNews.com how she had met Powers in August 2005, while Powers was still running one step ahead of a cloud of notoriety that linked her to three mysterious deaths and a staggering number of accusations of lies, fraud and seduction, leading police and the news media to dub her "The Black Widow." “I just wanted a friend, that's the God's honest truth,” Hodgins said. “I don't know if she's schizo or paranoid or whatever. But I can stand before God and be clean, and I don't think Camille can.” Not surprisingly, Hodgins met Powers — whom she knew as Camille — through her church in Charlotte. Hodgins had moved there recently to get a new start after her husband's death. Church members knew Powers as a devout woman whose only husband had died of cancer and who had just returned from years as a missionary in Africa and India.

I find this fascinating.

After my friend called with the sad news that her new (and fifth) husband was dead, I contacted the FBI. Her first two husbands had died of mysterious causes. Third husband went to jail for bank fraud. She was convicted of the same crime, but got probation because they had young children. Fourth husband ended up not really being her husband, but her children used his last name. She secretly remained married to the guy who was in jail. By putting all the debt in non-husband's name, he went bankrupt, she got the goodies. Fifth husband supposedly committed suicide.

FBI said there is no evidence of a crime, just coincidence.

The Penile Doppler Effect. There ought to be a wiki page for that.

Holy crap! Also, the response from the FBI sounds like the cop on South Park: "Nothing to see here, move along..."

I think that most men (and obviously some women) are just naive and are afraid to stand up for themselves.

Either that or sociopaths have seemingly magical powers to influence people.

Or both.

This story is giving me goose shivers.
Men DO need to be careful. Women are
way more viscious if they are criminal.

That's true. Men commit a lot more violent crime and sex offenses, but women (in my opinion) do a lot of this kind of stuff. Most of them don't do it to this extreme of course, but they certainly can manipulate people (mainly men) to get what they want. The big difference is that this kind of thing is way way way more common than most people realize. Much more common than armed robbery, rape, murder, etc.

I actually made that up but I think it's pretty funny. It would be a great one. Actually, in my field, there is a sonography procedure called a "penile doppler" which is done for men with a variety of probs (actually pretty serious too), so I just sort of used technical jargon and went from there.
