Florida State Song Contest
Self | April 1, 2007 | PJ-Comix

Yeah, I know it is April Fools Day but I am NOT kidding about my proposal that the state of Florida have a state song contest. Apparently, the governor and several legislators want to change the current state song, Way Down Upon The Swanee River (Old Folks At Home) to a song with lyrics less politically un-PC since the song was written by Stephen Foster in a somewhat less enlightened era. Also the current state song sort of reflects (in tune and lyrics) a Florida that was slower paced. The current state song was adopted when Florida had the smallest state population east of the Mississippi.

Therefore I am proposing that the Governor Crist announce a Florida State Song Contest. Anybody can enter. Prize money for the winning entry to be supplied by the tourist industry. BTW, this song contest would be GREAT publicity for Florida.

To kick off this contest, I propose that Freepers get it into gear by providing a new Florida State song. Remember to let us know what tune the words lyrics will be sung to.

TOPICS: History; Local News; Music/Entertainment; Society
KEYWORDS: florida; oldfolksathome; suwanneeriver
Let the Florida State song entries begin! I kind of like the theme tune from Miami Vice but is it possible to sing to that tune?

The American national anthem should be changed.

"God Bless America" or "Amazing Grace" could be the "Star-Spangled Banner's" replacement.

Although there is no mention of the country in "Amazing Grace," though even in the SSB it is primarily about the flag and surviving war (at least the first stanza). Odd that, both the national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance are about the flag, not the country (at least primarily--there is a pledge of allegiance.....and to the Republic).

Yes, this is off topic. Just ranting a little bit.

At first I thought you were talking about the Florida State Seminoles. I was going to suggest Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang". Can't help you with a request for the entire state, though.

"Way Down Upon a Southern City's moving H2O" just doesn't have the same impact!

I'd suggest Surfin' USA if all the places mentioned in it weren't in California.

How 'bout "Let it Snow"?
Hahaha only joking ;)

I suspect they expect new music, not a parody.

Never in a million years.

As I recall Virginia has the same problem. "Carry me back to old Virginny" was made the state song emeritus. However the legislature could not agree on a new song.

. . . want to change the current state song, Way Down Upon The Swanee River (Old Folks At Home). . . .

Keep the tune, just change the lyrics. Click and sing along!

THE COLD FOLKS ALL COME
Tune: "Old Folks at Home"

Dade, Broward, and in Palm Beach Counties,
Far, far from snow,
They're heading for those sun-coast bounties,
That's where the old folks go.
Just think of all the dough they're giving,
Fortunes they've blown,
To end up in assisted living
And in the old people's home.

Florida is weird and funny,
Even Flori-dumb,
But 'cause it's always warm and sunny,
That's why the cold folks all come.

Fat Germans in their shrunken Speedos
Lie like beached whales;
Spring break it's where the drunken teens go,
Filling the local jails.
Crowds lined up at a high-priced theme park,
Waiting to ride;
Kids swimming till the lifeguards scream, "Shark!"
Go find a safe place to hide!

Florida is weird and funny,
Even Flori-dumb,
But 'cause it's always warm and sunny,
That's why the cold folks all come.

Wave, hurricane, and rising ocean,
Sinkhole and swamp,
Storm forming, counter-clockwise motion--
Why am I feeling damp?
Homes picked up by the ocean breezes--
Watch the winds blow!
Gangs, gators, and a glut of geezers--
Back to the snow I go!

Florida is weird and funny,
Even Flori-dumb,
But 'cause it's always warm and sunny,
That's why the cold folks all come.

I don't speak Spanish. I don't think I can write a Florida state song in English. Nobody in the state would understand it.

"Send In the Clowns" would be more appropriate. Go Gators!

Years ago, in Los Angeles, Ken & Bob on KABC radio had a BIG song contest for an L.A. theme song. Hundreds, maybe thousands of songs were sent in. Finally Ken & Bob picked one of the songs and proudly played it on their station. Then not too long after that, Randy Newman came out with "I Love L.A.!" It blew away all the songs Ken & Bob went thru and they sheepishly retired whatever song won the contest.

It is amazing that with maybe thousands of entries, just one good song by a professional songwriter (and singer) easily surpassed all the others.
