Fred Thompson Supported Lincoln Chafee's Senate Run
The Brody File ^ | 04/10/07 | David Bordy

Posted on 04/11/2007 4:52:43 PM PDT by KevinDavis

The Brody File is in constant research mode. For all you Fred Thompson fans out there, grab a seat. Pause your TIVO episodes of Law and Order. Put on hold those portraits you've ordered of Fred Thompson and Ronald Reagan side by side in your living room. I've discovered that when socially liberal bad boy Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee was running for re-election in 2006, Fred Thompson campaigned for him and came to his defense. Here's the money quote:

"There are a lot of reasons I support Linc. We agree on most issues, disagree on some. Obviously, keeping control of the Senate is very important. I don't like the sound of 'Chairman Kennedy.' "

He agrees with Chafee on most issues? The last time I checked Chafee was pretty much off the reservation on most Republican talking points: immigration, taxes, Iraq war, traditional marriage, abortion. Shall I go on? I mean I get it. Thompson believes keeping Republicans in control of the Senate is the key. You know, it's all about the party. There's something to be said for that but I keep getting back to that line, "agree on most issues". That may be hard to stomach for Thompson fans who believe he's the true conservative choice if he runs. Here's a link to how Chafee has voted on the "issues."

"keeping control of the Senate is very important. I don't like the sound of 'Chairman Kennedy.' "

'Nuff said....

Agreeing on "most issues" vs. "disagreeing on some is a lot of territory....there are LOTS more non-important issues than core-principle-conservative-must-keep issues, so I have no problem with it at all.

Thompson is the most conservative and least-beholdin' of any Republican on the list of candidates thus far, in my book.

AND, most importantly....he's ELECTABLE with National appeal, not just localized support.

I would support Thompson in the general election, but that quote gives me one more reason not to support him in the primaries.

If Thompson DOESN’T run, you can forget having a Conservative majority on the Suprem Court in your lifetime......

You think any candidate in the ELECTABLE portion of the current crop is Conservative, and would be appointing Conservative Justices to the USSC?

The likelihood of the Hildabeast or Osama Obama winning is greatly enhanced by the lack of an ELECTABLE Conservative in the mix (which Fred Thompson would bring to the table).

Who do you know that a candidate who has yet to declare if he is going to run or not is going to win???????

Frankly, we won't win with any of the current candidates. Thomson will have a uniting affect on the party. All the undecideds would have a candidate with name-recognition and the right balance for social and fiscal conservatives.

Someone we can SUPPORT, instead of taking as our'only hope'.

"Who do you know that a candidate who has yet to declare if he is going to run or not is going to win???????"

Reagan entered the 1980 Presidential Race in November, 1979.

Thompson will enter the race before November, and if he does not, then the White House will be run by the Hildabeast or Osama Obama, as I don't believe any of the current Republican candidates can win, without some miracle happening, and NONE of the ELECTABLE Repulicans who are in the "announced" category right now is a Conservative....and that is the main point.....

When exactly does campaigning to maintain a GOP senate majority qualify as untrustworthy?

The only thing we should be upset about is that Fred still couldn't get Chafee re-elected, dislike him or not, he was the best a Republican could get out of Rhode Island.

Who here DOESN’T wish that Lincoln Chaffee won his Senate seat?

We would have control of the Senate. Chaffee would have control of nothing.
