Bigfoot risks extinction, says Canadian MP

Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.

So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

"The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing," reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.

"Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot," says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake's constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.

A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress.

Down through history, there have been numerous, if unsubstantiated sightings of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch in North American folklore.

The beast is said to inhabit remote forests, mainly in the US Pacific northwest and western Canada, and many believe it could be related to the equally mythical Yeti said to have found its home in Tibet and Nepal.

While sometimes described as large, hairy bipedal hominoids, Bigfoot are considered by most experts to be a combination of folklore and hoaxes.

But the legend remains strong, and Bigfoot researcher Todd Standing, who was behind the petition, claims to have proof of its existence, and says he fears for its safety.

"When I get species protection for them nationwide, I will make my findings public and I will take this out of the realm of mythology. Bigfoot is real," Standing told Global National television news.

He said he has 12 seconds of video footage of Bigfoot roaming Canada's western Rocky Mountains included in a 30-minute documentary, but his detractors say it was staged with actors.

His supporters hail from Canada's westernmost provinces, but Bigfoot sightings have been reported across the country, which is 90 percent uninhabited.

There are currently 516 plant and animal species at risk in Canada, according to Environment Canada. Another 13 species are already extinct.

I’d rather the government spend my tax dollars on saving bigfoot than a totally useless species like the spotted owl. At least bigfoot generates some tourism dollars.

We used to go to a fishing lodge in a part of British Columbia that was so remote there was no road. You had to fly in and land on a lake. I wish I had asked the people who lived there and owned it about Bigfoot. If anybody would know about Bigfoot it would be them.

Unlike the pest known as the Spotted Owl, there is no such thing as Bigfoot. If that exists, then so does the Loch Ness Monster.

Okay. So what's your point? I believe in Bigfoot AND Nessie. And CHAMP in Lake Champlaine. I take it on a matter of faith. Can you prove otherwise? I also believe in God (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) and in Satan.

The government would rather have us waste our time believing in that Bigfoot nonsense, than the real presence of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They believe in Satan, but for different reasons than we do. I also believe in the Blessed Mother, and Immaculate Conception.

Btw, some cable channel had a program on a couple of years ago, about a few pranksters(they weren’t young kids, either), who staged an elaborate Bigfoot hoax, complete with footprints. How old would Nessie be by now?

Hey, it’s cool. Believe what you want. It’s not harming anyone ;)

My sister once rode into town on a moose and ate a Bigfoot shaped cheese. I've been very sick since then. It was neither pretty nor easy to take. God help me, nobody else seems willing.

Skamania County Washington has had a law protecting Bigfoot since 1969. So if packing a gun in the wilds of Skamania Co. remember it is to protect you from cougars, bears, a charging bull elk, and the occupents of the mobile meth labs that occasionally show up at the remote campgrounds. But just don’t become famous by bringing home the first sasquatch carcass.

Following is the previously mentioned ordinance from Skamania County, Washington along with the amendment.

Skamania County Ordinance

Ordinance No. 69-01

Be it hereby ordained by the Board of County Commissioners of Skamania County:

Whereas, there is evidence to indicate the possible existence in Skamania County of a nocturnal primate mammal variously described as an ape-like creature or a sub-species of Homo Sapiens; and

Whereas, both legend and purported recent sightings and spoor support this possibility, and

Whereas, this creature is generally and commonly known as a “Sasquatch”, “Yeti”, “Bigfoot”, or “Giant Hairy ape”, and has resulted in an influx of scientific investigators as well as casual hunters, many armed with lethal weapons, and

Whereas, the absence of specific laws covering the taking of specimens encourages laxity in the use of firearms and other deadly devices and poses a clear and present threat to the safety and well-being of persons living or traveling within the boundaries of Skamania County as well as to the creatures themselves,

Therefore be it resolved that any premeditated, wilful and wanton slaying of such creature shall be deemed a felony punishable by a fine not to exceed Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000) and/or imprisonment in the county jail for a period not to exceed Five (5) years.

Be it further resolved that the situation existing constitutes an emergency and as such this ordinance is effective immediately.

ADOPTED this 1st day of April, 1969.

The above ordinance was partially repealed and amended in 1984 by Ordinance 1984-2:

The ordinance was amended to make the crime a gross misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in the county jail and/or a $1000 fine.

The new ordinance also created a million-acre refuge within the County.

Board of Commissioners of Skamania County

“A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress.”

The nutball who appealed to the US Congress apparently did not get the press that Canadian MP Lake got. I would normally say that it proves that he must have been a Republican since he did not get the press, but on the other hand, it could have been a Democrat who the media was trying to protect from public ridicule.
