"My guys are big advocates of Linux," says Martin High, director of IT at Valeo Behavioral Healthcare in Topeka, Kan. "We're taking a hard look at it on the desktop." Wait. On the desktop? For a business? That's right. And from a look at things, it shouldn't be as surprising as it might seem, for a number of reasons.

Our group just got a big shipment of new Dell desktops with and we installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on them (and with Beryl installed, they rock!). We plan to use them as our main development boxes, although I still keep my Windows box for the legacy .NET applications.

Actually, the process of installing Ubuntu and getting all my hardware to work on my Dell laptop gave me a new appreciation for my Windows XP.

However, though I dumped Ubuntu, I am now using Mepis 6.5 and loving it.

Hey...gotta have root ya know?

I’ve had easier times installing Ubuntu on several computers than I normally experience with XP. But the things which really make Ubuntu are the update and Synaptic managers. That’s so far above Windows it’s not worth talking about.

I do love Synaptic too. Mepis uses it now. I found the Mepis install so much faster and easier than Ubuntu. Especially for wireless. All I had to do with Mepis was to give the Network Assistant my SSID and WPA key and wireless was up and running.
Ubuntu would only use WEP and required about an hour of farting around just to get the Broadcom drivers working with ndis-wrapper. WPA was additional work but I finally just bagged it and went to Mepis.

The only trouble I'm having with Mepis is installing new themes. There doesn't seem to be a standardized method and the Theme Manager doesn't want to recognize the different packages.
I'll just have to keep picking away at it.
