Lowe's Motor Speedway is once again the center of the NASCAR world, but should other tracks get to share in the all-star festivities?

Lowe's Motor Speedway
No Lady in Black, this track.
Race promoter/car dealer Burton Smith and driver Curtis Turner formed a partnership to build a 1.5-mile oval north of Charlotte in 1959.
On June 19, 1960, the first World 600 was run at the new facility. A year later, like many superspeedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales.
Smith left in 1962 to pursue other business interests but returned in 1975 as majority stockholder and regained control of the day-to-day operations, hiring Humpy Wheeler as general manager.
Lowe's Motor Speedway has the distinction of being the first sports facility in America to offer year-round condominiums overlooking the speedway in 1984.
Banking/Turns: 24 degrees
Distance: 1.5 miles
Yup! I almost forgot I had the thread this week. :-)
I get to see the #44 car again!
Briefly, I'm sure.
Before he slides out the back door of the camera viewing angle. Wide angle lens, too, probably. :)
Smoke, to win.
NASCAR is apparently determined to get rid of me. Maybe they should run all their races on Speed. That should “encourage” more people demand that their cable providers charge another $10 for one more channel.
Even though it's NOT a points race, you can be sure this guy will be running for the $$$ and Glory! Hey, he's gonna have a kid to support and get through school! Do ya think his daughter will be pampered and have her daddy wrapped around her little finger in a few months?
Daddy....can I have the Car tonight????
I saved a few bucks and rearranged our satellite package and don’t get Speed or FoxNewsChannel.. I wish they would run all of it on ESPN
I like NASCAR but their all star weekend just does not even begin to compare to the other sports all star games. As far as I’m concerned its an off week.
Just what do you expect from a sport that starts off the season with their superbowl??
How much potting soil could my First Wife buy with a Million Dollars and how long would it take me to unload it...
At about $10 a bag:
100,000 bags at a minute each to unload continuosly: 70 days
I hope I don’t win...
We have been going to Lowes for the Fall race for a few years and it is an awesome place!
Probably won’t get to watch since we will be racing our own dirt late model SAt. Night. But I will have the sirius channel 128 on in the truck!
Get DirecTv and you will get Speed Channel and all the other goodies for the same price.
Letting the fans vote on the # of drivers to invert is silly. In fact, the whole idea of inverting is unappealing to me.
If they’ve got to have an All-Star race, I’d like to see them race identically prepared cars, IROC style. Take the shops out of it for the All-Star and make it an event based on driver talent alone. It might be interesting to see older drivers on lesser teams doing well when no one has an equipment edge.
just to mix up the allstar race, they should run it with right hand turns...
now that would be entertainment!
LOL. and at halftime, switch cars!
Thanks for getting us going this week. :)
I can’t wait, Saturday night racing woohoo!!
Lot’s of special paint schemes under the lights. NO RAIN PLEASE!!!
Stewart to work as pit reporter for SPEED during Nextel Open: #20-Tony Stewart will work as a SPEED pit reporter during the Nextel Open, a qualifying event that moves the top two finishers forward into the Nextel All-Star Challenge. Nextel Cup Series drivers #99-Carl Edwards, #18-J.J. Yeley and #84-A.J. Allmendinger have all agreed to make themselves available as SPEED pit reporters for the Nextel All-Star Challenge if they do not advance to the main event.(SPEEDtv PR)(5-15-2007) Jayski
This is going to be great!!
Top crew chiefs take wheel before All-Star Challenge
CONCORD, N.C. — The top crew chiefs in NASCAR Nextel Cup racing will trade their wrenches for driving suits during the inaugural Kobalt Tools Crew Chief Race on Saturday night, May 19, at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
The event will be the featured pre-race entertainment for the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge.
Utilizing Thunder Roadsters manufactured by 600 Racing and decaled to replicate the paint schemes of the Nextel Cup cars they oversee, the crew chiefs will compete in a 30-minute racing program that will include two qualifying heats and a feature race. The racing action will take place on the speedway’s quarter-mile oval, located on the frontstretch of the 1.5-mile track, and will be televised by SPEED.
“SPEED is really looking forward to covering the crew chiefs’ race,” said Hunter Nickell, SPEED’s executive vice president and general manager.
“In fact, the race will be featured live as part of NASCAR RaceDay All-Star Edition leading into the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge. We realize that some of the competitors host SPEED programs, but we assure fans we will be totally impartial. OK, mostly impartial.”
“These guys are all closet racers,” said H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “And they think they would be good drivers. Now they can show just how good [or bad] they really are.
“Mainly, it will be a lot of fun and we need more of that in our sport.”
Expected participants include: Alan Gustafson (No. 5), Billy Wilburn (No. 45), Chad Knaus (No. 48), Darian Grubb (No. 25), Gil Martin (No. 07), Jeff Hammond (SPEED Channel No. 11), Jimmy Elledge (No. 41), Kevin “Bono” Manion (No. 1), Larry McReynolds (SPEED Channel No. 28), Paul Andrews (No. 43), Scott Miller (No. 31), Steve Lane (No. 40), Steve Letarte (No. 24), Todd Berrier (No. 29) and Tony Eury Jr. (No. 8)??? I don’t think so.
“This is a very neat deal,” said former crew chief McReynolds, who now serves as a popular analyst for NASCAR on FOX and SPEED. “With everything going on, from the NASCAR Nextel Pit Crew Challenge to Saturday night’s big race, All-Star week is a very intense few days, even with no points on the line. Crew chiefs today get a lot of accolades and share in the spotlight, but this event will give them the unique opportunity to say, ‘Hey, I’m the best driving crew chief in NASCAR.’
“There will be a lot of smack talked in the garage area before and after this event. It’s about bragging rights. It’s like the Masters — those cats just want that green jacket. This is a great addition to NASCAR Nextel All-Star week activities.”
Larry Mac All Star BBQ On Speed now.
Question of the day. Who are the only drivers to have won this race on their first try?
Oh one more thing before I go, Bill Elliott will be in the 21 Wood Brothers car on a race by race basis using his champ provisional.
Please put in their comment section that the donation is in support of Jr. We're up to $4,000 in only a few days. :)
Yep in Nascar here today gone tomorrow.
Personally I will miss him, but not Jon Wood.
Have they said who’s house they are filming from?
Oohhhhhhh need ESad pics!! :)
Don’t look at Jayski or Fox etc if you don’t want to know who won the pit crew challenge.
Here’s an excellent article from Elliott Sadler
A Nice personal observation.
I suspect Jr. will be able to buy up DEI for pennies in the future.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah I want to live by Lake Norman.
Can we build FReeperville there?
Only if we can build a track around it!
LOL I think the local residents would go for it. :)
They just said that’s Larry Mac house. Sheesh, I’m going to put a resume in over at Speed Network. I know, he probably made good money crewchiefing and all. Sr probably took good care of him.
Big hugs for that one. Thank you.
I got an invitation from JRM for their open house next weekend. It’s just a bit too far. :(
I’m sure someone will send ya pics! ;)
Well that’s all folks.
See you tomorrow night for qualifying.
Lake Norman , huh?
Has a nice ring to it. ;-)
btw ,, just ran across this article ..
What am I bid for Junior? You may make the opening bid, WCG. :-)
Earnhardts listen to offers for Junior
JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer
CONCORD, N.C. - While Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the week off to relax, his sister was busy sorting out offers of employment for NASCAR’s most popular driver.
Kelley Earnhardt Elledge said Friday she has spoken to several teams and is prioritizing the options based on the best fit for Earnhardt. He announced last week that he is leaving DEI, his late father’s company, at the end of the season.
“We have all along said we would talk to everyone, specifically Chevrolet teams,” Elledge said. “We have not eliminated any options at this point.”
Elledge, who is Junior’s business manager, said the focus is currently on top Chevrolet teams, followed by everyone else. Elledge said that fielding his own Nextel Cup team out of JR Motorsports, the team Earnhardt owns, is “a last resort.”
Earnhardt is the most prolific free agent in NASCAR history, and most of the top car owners have said they’d like a chance to talk to him.
Three of the top four Chevrolet teams RCR, Joe Gibbs Racing and Ginn Racing have indicated a desire to speak to Earnhardt. Only Hendrick Motorsports, winner of eight of the past nine races this season, has been silent on the issue.
Elledge would not reveal what teams already have been in contact, but said she’s met with a few already and has scheduled meetings with others.
Richard Childress, who fielded cars for six of the elder Earnhardt’s seven championships, has indicated he will talk to Junior. And Bobby Ginn, who took over a midlevel team last summer, said he plans to aggressively pursue the driver.
J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing, said last week that he’d like to talk to Earnhardt but indicated it might not be a good fit. JGR promotes a family values image, and Gibbs said the organization would have a hard time accepting Budweiser, Earnhardt’s longtime sponsor.
Dodge owners Ray Evernham, Chip Ganassi and Roger Penske all have said they’d like an opportunity to sign Earnhardt, but acknowledge they are long shots because of Junior’s loyalty to Chevrolet. Even so, they all are in line waiting to see if Elledge gets that far down the list.
“It’s like trying to get a date with Jennifer Aniston if you see her, you’ve got to at least ask,” Evernham said.
Earnhardt has stayed out of the spotlight this week, asking for a little time to decompress following his decision to leave DEI. He’s cited a desire to win championships something he doesn’t think he can do at DEI as his reason for leaving. But contract talks with his stepmother, Teresa, were contentious and he demanded majority ownership in the company during negotiations.
Earnhardt’s team, meanwhile, is in trouble with NASCAR over an illegal modification to the Car of Tomorrow last week at Darlington Raceway.
Earnhardt was docked 100 points, and crew chief Tony Eury Jr. was fined $100,000 and suspended for six races. He’s appealing the severity of the fine, and will be allowed to work Saturday night’s All-Star race.
Lake Normans Revenge...
???? Puzzling ????
DEI, RCR merge engine programs
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer
May 18, 2007
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Dale Earnhardt Inc. has merged its engine program with Richard Childress Racing, an alliance that likely will help DEI return to prominence.
DEI has been in a slow decline since Dale Earnhardt’s 2001 death. Star driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is leaving at the end of the season because he doesn’t think he can win championships at DEI.
Stepmother Teresa Earnhardt disagreed, and the hope is that merging engine programs with RCR will strengthen the organization.
``This backs up what Teresa said last week — her commitment is solid, and her No. 1 priority is to win championships,’’ John Story, general manager of DEI, said Friday. ``This is the first of a few big things we are going to do to continue moving toward that goal of winning championships.’’
The first collaborative engine is scheduled to be used at Daytona International Speedway in July.
The merger’s similar to an agreement the elder Earnhardt once had with Childress and Andy Petree. The ``RAD’’ partnership pooled resources from all three teams to build a program for restrictor plate races.
The partnership was successful, as the three teams spent several seasons with the most competitive cars at Daytona and Talladega.
With the new DEI-RCR agreement, the engine program will be housed in a separate facility from both race shops, and managers from both teams will oversee it.
The engines will be used for the six combined Cup teams that DEI and RCR have, the Busch programs for both organizations and Kevin Harvick’s Busch team, too.
RCR currently has lease agreements with several teams, and all will use the motors produced from this venture.
Story said the merger was Teresa Earnhardt’s idea and had been in the works since last season. Childress fielded cars for six of the elder Earnhardt’s seven championships and has remained close with the family.
Childress said last week that he’s interested in signing Earnhardt Jr., and it’s not clear how this merger will affect
Concensus on the above article is that Richard would never do this unless Jr knew about it. In a way he would be helping Jr with engines in the 8 car for the rest of this year and maybe a bargaining chip for the #8 car. There’s a lot more to this story than meets the eye IMO.
Also, John Story from DEI reported in an interview that a lot of top drivers are interested in their open drivers slot.
HAHHAHAHAHA...LMAO [and I don’t use that term much] top drivers, um who??? Boris, Biffle, JJ, Stemme, Rocketman? I mean when I think top other than Jr I’m thinking Flash, JJ, Smoke, Matt, Kevin.
