India Man Fails High School Exams 39 Times
The Associated Press
JAIPUR, India - A 73-year-old man who failed his 10th grade high school exams for the 39th time vowed Friday to try again next year in the hopes that an education will improve his job and marriage prospects.
Shivcharan Jatav, a farmer from the desert state of Rajasthan in western India, had no formal education as a child. He has been trying to pass the exams since 1969, when an army recruiter told him it would improve his chances of being accepted into the military.
"Since then I have been trying to pass this examination, but without any success," Jatav said, days after receiving the bitter news that he had failed again.
Jatav passed only one subject , the ancient language of Sanskrit , and he said he scored just 103 out of a total of 600 in the examinations.
Even though he is too old to join the army he has kept at it, hoping to become a more eligible bachelor.
"I could not get married as the girls told my family members that I was not properly educated. It's my fate that deprived me of education and a married life," he said.
Still, he has no regrets. "I am a happy and contented person," said Jatav.

The world needs ditch-diggers, too.
Dude, try STUDYING.
The test was prejudicial towards farmers.
He just needs a better Lawyer! /s
Hell, he should come to the U.S and attend public high school. He’d have a diploma in no time.
Hopefully, he has changed that goal by now.
They should just make the test easier, like NYFD did for blacks.
God love this man.
LOL ping!
“”I could not get married as the girls told my family members that I was not properly educated. It’s my fate that deprived me of education and a married life,” he said”
An excellent form of birth control!

Am I missing something or does someone think it’s a bad thing when really dumb, hopelessly stupid people do not marry and procreate? That can happen only if they are female and attractive.
While I admire the man’s perseverence and optimism, I must admit that I’m tinged with a bit of guilt thinking that the world might not necessarily be a better place if he found a woman who was “marrying up” and they had a dozen children equipped with similar intellectual potential.
The gene pool is a bit brighter because of stories like this.
Perseverance ping
Bump
The world needs ditch-diggers Hillary voters, too.
Michael Moore needs fans.
True, jorge will make him a doctor of something, make him a general and then let him retire on SSI.
I would bet many of those braying on this thread have suffered or seen loved ones suffer societal stigmas.
Interesting that he thinks his "Fate" in life is determined by forces outside his control
I agree with that.
It’s easier for some people to make thoughtless “jokes” instead of really considering this man’s life.
I wouldn't exactly call it a stigma.
A tenth grade exam is generally taken and usually passed by the average 15 year old. This guy has tried to pass it for decades and is now almost dead of old age. He is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.
There are stupid people out there - as politically incorrect as that awful statement might be. He is probably one of them.
We know none else than the bare report. Could the gent be suffering from something like dyslexia?
Jaipur has one of the best (old) gun collection i have ever seen
If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Then give up; don't be a damned fool about things. (Stolen from W C Fields)
Springs from his religion, most likely. Hinduism essentially says your fate is set, and you can only hope to live it as best you can to have a better life in the future before you meet enlightenment...
Interesting that a religion is so synonymous with Socialism, eh?
“Endeavor to persevere”
you should win a prize, LOL
He would probably get a diploma much more easily in the USA.
Thats for the all suckers to buy. Hinduism has a way to weed out the “suckers” gene from the pool. Real Hindus dont believe fate is all preset.
.....good I told you ;)
Hey, if ain't broke don't fix it.

The tragedy of this article is about a screwed-up Indian examination system, which is hardly a measure of an individuals ability or intelligence is seen as a means of natural selection. Many of India’s bests have failed school exams.
"... he scored just 103 out of a total of 600 in the examinations"
That's 17% correct. There probably are some government schools in America where that would be a passing grade. Heck, some schools would pass him just for trying a few times.

You remind me of the bad old day.
It is not until Senior year of college that the US education system catches up, graduate school here is by far the best in the world and a primary reason for scientific excellence here.
The socialist public education system in the USA is a disgrace for a world leader and any Asian / European nation is way ahead.
I say this is a proud, passionate and staunchly pro-American US citizen but facts are facts.
Give me 38 years and 39 attempts, and I could ace that test.
I’ll still bet that he is smarter and has more common sense than the average DeomKrat.
Yeah ... this guy must be dumber than a rock if he couldn’t answer those questions! hahaha
Ha, and love it.
Some of the comments here bummed me out. Most of them are bigger “idiots” than this man who they judged. What’s worse is when people think they have a superior right to procreate. Hell, if stupid people weren’t allowed to reproduce MOST of wouldn’t be here when you really think about it.
Great post. :)
Passing similarity to partisans of hyper-Calvinism who deny that men choose while at the same time they are very busy making choices.
Unfortunately, on the way to his 40th attempt, he died when the bus in which he was riding went off the cliff.
It’s pretty tough for 10th grade, but my kids are doing that in their school. I finished an engineering program, so it’s not that bad - even though I’m a bit rusty.
Question 10 has an error. I used to hate when there were errors in tests like that! Not only did I find errors, but subsequently wasted a lot of time trying to get it right anyway.
In this case it’s simple, they meant “B” instead of “R” - but also, you don’t know where the line segment PT actually is intended to end, since it’s not annotated. Is PT the entire line segment, or is it the point from P to where the line touches the circle?
Since the previous question (#9) was about two instances of the Pythagorean Theorem, I would assume that they are trying to get a Pythagorean solution for this question too, but as I am unfamiliar with the course material for 10th grade India and there is not enough clear information, I would probably get this one wrong if it is not in fact trying to simply get students to use the Pythagorean Theorem.
...but didn’t this guy have like 60 years to prepare?
He is happy and has nothing else needing his attention so why not. Maybe #40 will get him his diploma and then he can find a nice 20 year old wife and join the army, which seems like an unhappy combination, but he thinks that will make him happy. He is already happy and needs to talk to a guru of some kind.
Yes, mistakes like that would be very frustrating, but that paper was not from the official board’s website. I just swiped it off a place that was distributing old papers to practise, and I guess they might have scanned the original paper erroneously.
‘T’ appears to be the tangent in that figure. Again, it looks like a bad scan/ or someone re-drew the figure for the website by eyeballing.
For the 9th question, with all the right angles being indicated therein, using the Pythagorean Theorem would be the right way to proceed.
As for the 30 years, well words fail me. Maybe he was a really bored farmer, and taking exams was his pastime.
:^)
Oops, I meant 60 years, in the last line!
And what Virginia Beach, VA., did for blacks because they kept failing
the math tests. Incredible..
In 1969 he was 35 years old.
While some men of that age are in great shape and ready for anything, military service is a young man's game.
I suspect the army recruiter was giving him a polite brush-off and he unfortunately took it to heart.
I hope he truly is happy with his life and I wish him well.
Everyone has to have a hobby, I guess the exam is his.
