A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday.
Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.
The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police spokeswoman Toni Chovonetz said she had no further information, including how many people were involved.
The driver was able to get away is cooperating with investigators, police said.
Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.
If the crowd were white and the victim black, not only would their races be prominently featured in the article (and in news reports in all of the national media), but Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would already be in town organizing national protests.
“Juneteenth”
Sheesh.
“identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40”
Just a guess here but I’d say just mexicans doing the work Americans won’t do.
I'm not sure how "white" he is, but odds are he's not particularly "black".
Got to believe some alcohol was involved here.
This might possibly be a case of over-reaction.
I believe Juneteenth is another black holiday. So put 2 and 2 together.
I had planned to bake a nice Juneteenth cake and everything. Damn.

Juneteenth is a “African-American” holiday. (I’d never heard of it, had to look it up)
Being from Texas I am sure you know that Juneteenth is celebrated exclusively by the black population.
That is very hard core for Austin.
Perhaps, Detroit, Boston, LA or New Orleans but not Austin.
Sounds like jungle-injustice to me. F-ing thugs! It’s a shame that nobody will ever be charged (mark my words).
Austin’s a zoo. Obviously the animals were restless.
Strange how underwraps this story appears to be.
They'll probably charge the dead guy.
I am white, live in Texas and have been to Juneteenth celebrations.
Hopefully someone with a cell phone camera and a conscience recorded the murder, and will turn it over to police.
Ya think??!! Maybe people dislike Mexicans a little too much sometimes.
Look for this to become a Federal holiday at some point.
One could assume black Juneteenth celebrants beat Mexican descended (either legal or not) man to death in Austin for trying to get them not to kill a man whose car injured a kid...not too seriously either.
I would bet the driver was not black either.
This is like third world stuff. When I lived third, one did not stop the car for any accident. It could be a one way ticket just because of stuff like this.
This is more of what America is going to become down the road almost inevitably.
Token?
Animals.
I think blacks “dislike” Mexicans even more than they “dislike” whites.
Notice I didn’t say hate.
Only WHITE people hate.
The passenger disrespected the crowd so he had to die
I presume you have never been to East Austin?
In which 3rd-world country did you live?
Some of my (white) friends go to Juneteenth in Milwaukee. They tell me they get stared at a lot, but it’s worth it for the ribs and corn.
No, in the past I have gone to Junetenth celebrations in Austin however, no one was killed.
Just freeze it and save it for Kwanza.
The last line of the article gives you the hint on the crowd’s ethnicity. The passenger’s name hints as to the ethnicity of the occupants of the vehicle. Whites aren’t the only group people of that ethnicity (the crowd) have enmity with. Articles with this sort of omission are more of a case of not bringing up inconvenient statistics or reminders of statistics that might affect the perception of certain hyphenated Americans.
(wow, is it hard to write without mentioning specifics).
Mexicans dislike “pretos” very much usually....which is why I surprised at Kobe’s hot Mex-wife he cheated on.
$$$$$ can cure old prejudices I reckon
in all fairness, Juneteenth is a legitimate day for blacks to recognize I guess...better than Kwanza.
Atlanta has had this for a while but it also has the same problems...with crime, shooting and wilding etc.
Isn’t Juneteenth sorta what used to be Jubilee?
I beleive Texas is the only state in that this is a paid holiday.
>>killed<<
Very neutral-sounding choice of words, isn’t it? I guess that “lynched” or “murdered” would have been too inciting. And it leaves the actual details regarding the manner of death completely unclear. Was the victim hanged, burned alive, shot, or killed by lethal injection?
You can "PC it up" far more than that. It should be:
"The African-American community has a long-standing cultural mistrust of Latinos."
How'd I do? I should be a journalist.
I can see that but down here a BBQ joint carries less risk with it.
“Juneteenth”? And all this time I thought it was called “Juneteenf”!
I live in South Austin and go to East Austin almost every day. the reality of East Austin is that it has gentrified and two bedroom tear down houses are selling for a quarter of a million dollars.
You are more likely to see a Yuppie in a BMW than see a urban blight.
Hehehe...
3000 strong drunk mob in a black nieghborhood on a hot day, celebrating a local hero?
Sierra Leone, Brasil, Colombia, Haiti, Jamaica....and a lot of travel to dozens more.....Nicaragua, Guatemala, Burma, Zambia etc.
longest stretches .....Colombia and Haiti
I’m 7th generation Mississippian which is rather similar btw....at least in Jackson. The rural folk while quite poor are much less hostile.
This was a racial murder, along the lines of Crown Heights.
i wonder if this relates to the black teen killed by APD last month...the local black community was already twitchy
They let me be. The food was great as was the music. People gave me no problem at all.
Historically, Juneteenth was a Texas thing only. However, since the 1970s it has spread a bit to areas with very large black populations.
For a matter of perspective, I think celebrating the news that blacks were freed from slavery is as good a reason as any to have a holiday.
That said, I am a little surprised this happened in Austin. When I started reading I just assumed it was Houston or Dallas. Then again, the east side can be rough at times.
What are the odds this will be charged as a hate crime?
No. More likely El Cinco De Mayo will be the next holiday.
Don’t know who the driver was, but by the name of the passenger my guess is he was a Mexican.
I guess a lot of people are getting riled up about illegal aliens killing Americans with their cars.
And no - despite my tag name “ZULU” I’m white.
There have been a few cop on black and brown cop shootings in Austin over the last few years. For the last one a black male was shot in the back as he ran from police.
If this had been a white mob attacking a black or Hispanic person, the race angle would be played up and Jesse Jackson would be winging his way to Austin. But let’s move on, nothing to see here . . .
I asked him what he was going to do for June Teen-th?
He replied “What is June Teen-th?”.
I told him the Emancipation Proclamation and asked him “ Didn't they tell you’ll in Mississippi?”.
I did not know it was a Texas date.
