VANCOUVER -- In what Vancouver police say is likely the worst mass shooting in the city’s history, two masked gunmen burst into an eastside all-night Chinese restaurant and shot eight people in front of horrified onlookers.

At least two young men died and a third man was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to Const. Howard Chow, a Vancouver Police Department spokesman. Five others were also taken to hospital with less serious gunshot wounds.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. local time Thursday at the Fortune Happiness Restaurant, leaving a restaurant shattered, and a city on edge.

The severity of the shooting brought immediate calls from the police for more gang patrol officers, although the department said it didn't know whether the incident was gang or drug-related.

It also generated a stinging attack on the Liberal-dominated Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who said the Upper House was holding up two important pieces of anti-crime legislation that might have helped prevent the attack.

Yeah, this was all due to guns on the street smuggled in from the States. Right.

A 9-person table at 4:30 AM and two gunmen come through the door and shoot only at them. And they're thinking that gangs and drugs might have been involved?

More deaths because of liberalism. Liberalism is a disease that must be treated with the same injections they give for abortions!

Who goes to a Chinese restaurant for breakfast? At 4:30 you would think a Denny's would be a better choice.

Maybe the victims could sue the restaurant for false advertising. There doesn't seem to be much Happiness going on in that place.

Harper is solid.

So it seems. But he wants to have a functioning government (ie, majority) in Canada, not Texas or Virginia.

Harper said the Conservative government is working on Bill C-10 -- which would establish mandatory prison sentences for serious gun crimes -- and Bill C-35 -- which would reverse the onus on bail for those charged with gun crimes.

"These reforms have been demanded by police, by prosecutors, by big-city mayors, by provincial governments of all stripes. And yet they are being held up by the Liberal majority in the unelected Senate," he said.

Given the history of revolving door policies for violent offenders in Canada it might not be a bad idea to institute some reforms. But make it for violent crimes, not "serious gun crimes"; those so designated in Canada might not seem very serious to a dispassionate observer.

the restaurant has changed ownership three times in the last five years, yet it always remained a late night eatery open from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Shamis Ali, the owner of a Somalian eatery, Mogadishu Cafe, next door said she had long been suspicious about the restaurant's clientele. "I always felt like something bad was going on in there," she said. "Many nicely dressed people came here with nice cars all lined up."

Seems doubtful that anything BUT gang and drug activity ever went on at this restaurant. 24 hour restaurants aren't uncommon, but I've sure never heard of a restaurant that was ONLY open overnight.

sometimes its hard to know whether a post is serious or not. But its not illegal to own a handgun in Canada, but the laws are very strict. And of course all criminals abid by the laws as we all know.....
