When I was 10, my dad brought me along with him to some volunteer work that he was doing - Community Board 5 in NYC had a day when they bused 5,000 lonely local seniors to the beach and threw them a big picnic.

My job was to slice hundreds of cantaloupes in quarters to distribute on the dessert line.

As I was doing this, about five police cruisers pulled up escorting a town car.

Mayor Ed Koch (who was being discussed as a possible gubernatorial candidate) got out, and one of his aides took my knife, handed it to the mayor and asked me to hand him a cantaloupe for the camera.

As he sliced a single cantaloupe in half, a dozen reporters snapped his picture. He then put down the knife, wiped his hands on a paper towel his aide handed him, shook a few elderly hands for the cameras and whizzed off.

The whole thing took maybe 2 minutes.

I cut the halved cantaloupe into quarters and served it.

The next day, the papers had a picture of Koch that was captioned something like: "How'm I Cookin'?: Hizzoner lends helping hand preparing meals for needy seniors at charity beach outing." He cut a single cantaloupe in half. He was there for three minutes, tops.

Pelosi's appearance at this event is undoubtedly conducted along similar lines.

Well Nancy has to pander to her base as she faces a tough re-election fight next year against Cindy Sheehan.

The left is so dependable for meaningless and hollow gestures for pointless causes.

Where’s the Memorial for heart disease which kills and has been killing and will be killing millions of people more than a disease aacquired by poor behavior choices (with the exception of babies with Aids acquired because of their drug addicted mothers, etc.)

Wheres the memorial for people killed in traffic accidents? Cancer? Athletes foot? The heartbreak of psoriasis?

Medical advice, don’t let yourself get screwed in the butt. Just say no and keep your pants on. Simple, n’cest pas?

Wow, that’s amazing. I always knew these things were staged and done for the cameras, but I never realized they spent so little time ACTUALLY there!

I don’t know, I guess it’s not something only a few politicians do; I guess they all do it, and I guess it’s not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. But I still wonder how these people think it’s ok to lie like that; I mean they KNOW people are getting the impression they were there for the whole day!

Or at least long enough to fill in for someone’s lunch hour or something.
