The aggressive bear that was killed a week ago by an Amish Road homeowner after the animal charged and then attempted to pull out a window air conditioner has tested positive for rabies...
"We sent the head to our health and mental hygiene lab in Baltimore on Thursday and got the results Friday," ...
At 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 29, the homeowners had heard a commotion outside and saw a bear attempting to get at two penned pygmy goats. When the family hollered from its main doorway at the bear, it wheeled and charged the house.
"At first it was pushing on the door and I was holding onto the handle from inside," said Charlotte Stanton. "Mike was going to the gun room to get a gun," ...
At that point, Charlotte said the bear left the door and attempted to pull an air-conditioning unit out of a window.
"I was pulling from inside and the bear was pulling on it from outside when Mike got there with the gun," Charlotte added. "There was just enough room to stick out the gun barrel beside the air conditioner, but you couldn't aim it. He just stuck it out there and shot and it flattened the bear."
The No. 4 shotgun pellets struck the bear in the head and neck, authorities reported. The bear was eventually put down by a Natural Resources Police officer ...
"A little after that we got a call from DNR, who said, 'We hear you have a bear problem' and I said, 'Not any more we don't.'"
During recent years, rabid bears have been confirmed in Alberta, Canada, and Pennsylvania.
In the Pennsylvania incident, it was discovered that the sow bear had actually devoured her own cubs...

When the bears start stealing air conditioners... they might be rabid.
#4 shot would not have been my first choice.
#4 shot was probably on hand for two-legged varmits. You’re right, slugs or 000 buck would have been better!
If the muzzle is stuck in the bear's ear birdshot would do.
“The aggressive bear that was killed a week ago by an Amish Road homeowner...”
I thought the Amish weren’t supposed to own guns.
Do you have to be Amish to live on Amish Road?
Guns, heck! What's an Amish farmer doing with air conditioners???
Even thought it’s not a human intruder, perhaps it would be worth pinging this to alert people of the rabies aspect.
IMO, the gun ownership and use saved these people’s lives.
I don’t know how long someone could hold out against a rabid bear.
I once shot a passive-aggressive bear.
With a rubber band.
WV isn’t that big. Might be of interest for your areas.
In the Pennsylvania incident, it was discovered the sow actually ate her own cubs.....
And mothers of teenagers understand how a tiger can eat her cubs. :)
Might be good to alert people to.
I love it!
If you can hold on long enough for “Mike to go get a gun”, you’ll be okay.
It’s better than holding on til the bear drops dead from the rabies.
I've got a gun safe. This guys got an entire gun room. I like him already.
L
By a long shot!
HA! Are the other rooms without them? /sarc
Or hot. It was probably reminded by the folks yelling, that beer and potato chips would have gone well with the goats. He probably didn't know the AC needed to be plugged in to work and that just caused a lot of frustration.
Rabies yet. That means that after the bear gets through chewing both your legs off you might have to have painful shots...
"Honey, I'm gonna get a gun. You want anything to drink while I'm up?...."
That cracked me up.
i have a gun room too. after all, i can’t fit all the ammo, components, reloading equipment, recipe books, holsters, slings, bipods, mounts, spare optics, tools, targets, etc., in the safes. :)

Animals definitely count! Bears or pit bulls, coons or cougars, if a gun was justifiably used in self defense, I’ll ping it. (Mad attack rabbits are a little iffy, Mr. Carter...)
My kinda folks. I've got a 5x10 foot gun vault, but it scarcely qualifies as a room.
ping
Unless that was your only choice.
The closest you’ve been to a bear is a bear claw from the bakery.... ;^)
We have a fair number of Amish in the county and everyone of them have more guns than the average farmer has. They seem to favor SKS for low cost, reliability, plenty of ammo available. When they move and have auctions the guns are all well kept and there is always plenty of ammo to go with them.
“Mike was going to the gun room to get a gun,” ...
Yeah, but he’s got a “GUN ROOM”! WOW!
I should have read your post I just said the same thing. I’ve got a backpack with a few pistols.
If it's in a tug of war with a bear over a window A/C it appears that you can hold out for at least a minute or two. Out on open ground I doubt that Evander Holyfield could hold out more than about 10 seconds.
A couple of years ago we had a mother bear and her cub come into our yard out here in the GA mountains. She sniffed around the barbque pit for a few minutes and then wandered off again with the cub following along. I wouldn't have wanted to try to stop her from doing whatever she wanted as long as her cub was with her. Mama bears are very protective of their cubs.
I want a walk in safe.
You are more than I can bear.
‘Not any more we don’t.’
8-)

Keeping cool and comfy, what else?
The Der Dutchman A/C units from Amish Depot are powered by those big draft horses they plow with. 2 big horses per central A/C, 1 pony per window unit.
You “bearly” know me.... ‘^)
Dang! Having a rabid bear come after you is a double whammy. Like the lady said, they were lucky none of them were in the yard. I’ve got a cousin who knows you can’t out run them or dodge them. lol
Thanks for the ping.
He probably has a large diesel generator on-site. The Amish up here in PA (The one's running dairy farms) have pretty much had them for years. They just can't have electrical utilities as I understand it. They also do a lot with compressed air motors. Still an air conditioner seems to be 'stretching it' just a tad.
"A little after that we got a call from DNR, who said, 'We hear you have a bear problem' and I said, 'Not any more we don't.'"
thanks, didn’t see it
Ursus foiled again. Or somethin’...
LOL at that quote.
I live way out in the country. I always have one of my guns close by, loaded. If I have a rabid animal (which is possible), trying to attack me or my dogs or cat, I’m shooting. Raccoons here are known rabies carriers, in fact for the past couple of years they’ve dropped some pellets from planes in wooded areas here to try to get a handle on rabies from spreading. A danged rabies infested bear would be frightening.
Just minutes before opening this thread/ping I saw, through my livingroom window, a HUGE raccoon at my deer feeder. I am concerned about my English setter getting bit, she would run up to one in a minute. She does a pretty good job keeping the possum population down around here, I find them on my decks dead all the time after she discovers them around my house. But that big raccoon that was just in my yard could tear her up easily.
I never thought about bears carrying rabies.
This in your neck of the woods?
‘Bout 70 miles west of me, give or take.
[Hubby’s already swapped out the buckshot in the Mossberg for slugs so we’re okay].....:)
A rabid bear is a scary thought.
I will now re-check my locked doors and windows....
