Last evening I took US Airways flight #707 from Philadelphia to Raleigh.
Loading almost last were two Marines with their explosive sniffing dogs, causing quite a stir.
We learned, the guys had just returned from a 6 month Iraq deployment only 24 hours earlier. Seats in First Class were given up for these four heros.
Their dogs are trained to sniff out IEDs and other threats. One Marine proudly said that his sheppard sniffed out 5 IEDs and a number of other threats in her 6 month tour. He made no mention of what he had done - only how proud he was of his dog.(Marine humility)
At one point, I noticed one of the dogs was sitting on her handler's lap (all 80 pounds of her!) and she was enjoying lots of love as crew and passengers went by.
The flight crew treated the "four" Marines like celebrities (which they are, in my book). At one point, an announcement was made about who was on board with thanks for what all four mean to us and for their sacrifice. All on board gave the Marines a loud round of applause. In the excitement, the dogs barked right along with the cheers!!
It is now 12 hours later and I am still smiling. What a wonderful experience that was.
Thank you to the crew of US707 for how kind you were to our troops last night. A big Bravo Zulu to you!
And thanks to the Marines on that flight - and to all Marines - for sharing your dogs with us and the sacrifices all "four" of you make daily on our behalf.
woof!
Heroes bump!
That made my day too.
I also have a heavy heart for man's best friend, especially schutzhunds.
What a terrific story. Thanks for posting it.

BTW, very nice email has been sent to US Airways.
Were the dogs Labrador Retrievers?
Naw. They keep bringing the IED's back to the Marine's hooch!! These were German Shepherds: one male, one female. Real cuties too!!
woof
Wonderful...Americans love and support our Troops. No matter how the hateful media tries to portray it. ;o)
