Bumped from its slated June launch date thanks to the frantic scramble to finish the iPhone, the latest version of Mac OS X is finally ready for its close-up. Apple announced today that "Leopard" will bound into stores next Friday, complete with a revamped desktop, a new backup feature, and more ways to inspect your file folders.
The Apple Store is already taking preorders for Mac OS X v10.5, which will go on sale at 6 p.m. on October 26. Expect to shell out $130 for a single-user license, or $200 for a five-user family pack. Also keep in mind that the system requirements for Leopard are pretty hefty this time around: those with Intel systems should be OK, but PowerPC users will need at least an 867MHz G4 processor with 512MB of RAM. Sorry, G3 users—looks like Mac OS 10.4 is the end of the line for you.
Many of the changes in Leopard look more like tweaks than full-scale innovations. The Dock, for instance, is now glossy and foreshortened, and it has a new feature: Stacks, which are Dock items that spring up with files and folders when clicked. The Finder, meanwhile, adds a revamped folder sidebar that organizes system items into Devices, Shared, and Places; even better, you'll be able to browse your files using Cover Flow from iTunes. Nice, but not exactly mind-blowing.

I've been a Mac fan for 20 years (got my first Mac SE in 1987) and will never touch a PC for home use so long as the Mac OS is available. I don't care what the political leanings are of those who design the Mac and the software. The things work great.
Though I keep using the older hardware and software as long as I can, and only upgrade when absolutely necessary. Still using 10.3.9 on this g4/1.25 dualie. The new iMac has 10.4.10, but in no hurry to upgrade that, either.
Actually, the best way to buy Macs is to wait until the "latest and greatest" is announced, and then buy a closeout at cut-rate prices. You're only "one generation back" and someone else can pay the premium pricing.
Same with the OS. Now that 10.4 is coming out, the price of 10.4 system software disks should drop through the floor. I'll pick one up on ebay and upgrade this one from 10.3 to 10.4...

I guess I’m good with 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2 GB 667 Mhz of SDRAM.... sweet!
I only miss the gaming, Palm software and some banking/hospital networks on a virtual network. I can use my wife's machine for that.
It's just amazing that "everything works" on this machine.
I'm thinking that Leopard will correct some of those as Bootcamp did.
The guy who earlier stated that it's a tool is correct. Just like a hammer....that works.

I have two computer games I bought a long time ago for my PC. Doom and Quake, they’re kinda fun, I play them maybe once a month for a few minutes.
I also bought Myst years ago and quickly got bored!

You’re probably right, that MS the corp and it’s owners and employees lean left, but I think probably a majority of PC users lean right. Know what I mean? But of course as Dennis Miller says, “ That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.”

Just about every pioneer in desktop computers was a hippie at heart. That was the driving force -- power to the people. Take computers, once the exclusive franchise of big companies, and give them to everyone.
That's how I got my G4/867/Superdrive. When it was phased out, when the next generation was announced, I got a factory refurb. I did the same with my G3 iBook, which I'm still using.
I broke the rule when I got the dual-core Mini that's my current alpha Mac. I wanted Intel, because I wanted to be able to run Windows in Boot Camp or Parallels. I'm building a fair number of Web pages these days, and I want to be able to preview them in Windows browsers, since that's what most folks are stuck using.
Is it just me or has the left politicized everything.
I think there’s more and greater (to state the obvious) polarization today than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime (and I’m OLD!)
Many things that shouldn’t be philosophically politicized are.
There's a greater divide than ever in life and not just in the US. It’s worldwide.
It would be interesting to see what terms are used to describe this polarization, but that itself, would probably be labeled with the usual terms, “racist, sexist, homophobe, xenophobe, etc., etc.”,...the usual suspects.
Well, Michael Dell and Carly Fiorina are Republicans, but other than that, Silicon Valley seems to either lean to the left or toward libertarianism for some. While Jobs is generally a lib, he isn’t a bleeding heart one. While he featured Gore on Apple’s front page (Gore is on the board, so it’s about sucking up to one of the company’s main figures) he did blow off Greenpeace and the teacher’s unions over the last few months.
Well, since Windows makes up 90-95% of the market, people on both the right and left are predominately PC users. Mac users are more present on the left than on our side, but even there they’re still in the minority.
