19 million! That’s more I thought she would get...not surprised at all to about the verdict. Nothing rose to termination in my opinion.

Good heavens! LOL. (You beat me to it). I tend to believe that the jury didn't exactly think Stacy was perfect, but after all the testimony, they must have thought what was going on at Fresno State was absolutely disgusting. I also think they may have looked at the drug issue and thought she probably needed counseling more than she needed to be fired. But any way one looks at it, this is stunning!

"California State University, Fresno was found liable for $19.1 million in damages in the sexual-discrimination case brought against the university by former women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein."

Johnson-Klein awarded $19.1M in trial vs. Fresno State

This means that with the three lawsuits, Fresno State has lost approximately 25 million dollars to lawsuits in just the last few months. Caramba!

Random thoughts...

I presume the University has liability insurance but is there a yearly cap? Surely they have gone way past that threshold. Will Welty be scrutinized by the Chancellors office for hiring Scott Johnson? There has got to be some consequences for what was allowed to happen in that Athletic Dept.

Fresno State left eleven women on that jury...eleven women who have at one time or another shared a Vicodin or sleeping pill with friends. That was the crux of the firing. And you are correct she should have been offered counseling if she did indeed have a drug problem.

What did she have on Scott Johnson that he wanted her gone so quickly?

I wonder if the State University system will have to pay for this?

The appeal, I predict, will lower the amount only slightly.

Can’t wait for tomorrow’s Bee and Ray Appleton’s show-whoohoo!

I tried to get through to Ray's show today about the Sims caper, and I was left hanging because they decided not to take another call. Bummer. I don't know if the University's liability insurance will pay or if there is a cap. Be interesting to find out.

I agree about the drug issue. It was not a major issue with the jury, and Fresno State overdid it.

The other thing that came out was the disparity between the disciplinary actions against her and the seeming lack of disciplinary actions against Lopes despite a LOT of NCAA violations. That may have been HUGE to the jury!

If the powers that be are upset, it may be that a LOT of ugly, dirty laundry got exposed to the public as a result of this trial, and it wasn't necessarily the fault of Stacy. And THAT may be unforgivable as far as retaining Welty.

I was listening to Inga Barks an hour ago and was quite surprised by the response from the callers. Most were upset that she won. Upset because now any woman who perceives a leering glance but is a poor employee and is fired will win a lawsuit claiming harassment. But I think they are very misguided in their opinions. Stacy wasn’t a bad employee she was good for the basketball program. She didn’t get a leering glance she got asked for a sleepover by her boss. The hostile environment in the Athletic Office (Ugly Women’s Day potluck) was outrageous.

Stacy was smart. After she refused S Johnson she began documenting the disparities between the men’s and women’s programs with emails to her superiors. She also made a paper trail to her boss that she was uncomfortable being told she dressed inappropriately and wanted a change in supervisors. Her documentation won this trial. She must have felt very insecure in her position at Fresno State when she refused her boss’s advances. Insecure enough to make a court case if need be. And it was needed. You would think that the Fresno State lawyers would have seen the email trail and tried to settle for the 1.5m. The timeline on the emails is really incredible. Also settle to keep the dirty laundry off the TV and Bee.

Did you happen to see the news on ABC 30? They reporter interviewed two players after the verdict and the girls were in tears because Stacy won. The felt victimized by their coach and what were they going to get now? Like somehow if Stacy had lost they would have gained financially. They were whining because the jury wasn’t swayed when they testified to being called a toad by their coach. What is with these players? You really should see the interviews.

"She didn’t get a leering glance she got asked for a sleepover by her boss."

I think the jury found the testimony of the secretary credible about Scott having sex with another female in the motel room. The secretary did not seem to be a person who would make something like that up, and it didn't help the case when the defense badgered her on it. The jury probably got a view that Scott was a horn dog and some of them have probably seen people like that who got away with, and still get away with, a lot of nonsense.

The smartest thing Stacy did was to begin to document what was going on. Regardless of what she did that got her fired, by documenting the things she did, she guaranteed herself a fighting chance in court. She could not have won if certain people at Fresno State had not behaved poorly.

State Senator Dean Florez is publicly calling for Welty to step down or be fired. He has also said that if he doesn’t resign or be fired, that he will ask that Fresno State’s budget be held up. Yikes!

Nothing. First 20 minutes spent talking to a couple comics that will be playing Chukchansi tonight and then a few calls. At 1pm he replayed a twenty minute interview with Stacy and her lawyer that they taped last night and then a few calls. It was a letdown to say the least. I was hoping for a lot of calls as Ray said his email was overflowing and that it was just about 50-50 in opinions.

One caller picked up on a previous post of mine about the victimized players and their entitled attitude. He felt the same way I did that somehow these players thought they should have gotten a settlement if Stacy lost. Bizarre. I hope Bill McEwen picks up on that in his column tomorrow.

How was the Golden Compass?

I liked it. I am aware of the “religious” controversy but I disregarded it. An alternate universe, an alternate reality, and an alternate religion. To me, none of this is new.
