Actors Studio host Lipton was a pimp in France
ABC Action News - Tampa Bay ^ | October 21, 2007 | AP

James Lipton, the host of U.S. talk show, Inside the Actors' Studio, once worked as a pimp in Paris, France.

The revered TV presenter, who has sat down with Hollywood's biggest names for in-depth chats about their life and work over the last 13 years, has revealed he once procured clients for French hookers.

He says, "This was when I was very very young, living in Paris, penniless, unable to get any kind of working permit... I had a friend who worked in what is called the Milieu, which is that world and she suggested to me one night, `Look, you'll be my meck... We would translate it perhaps... as pimp.

"We were earning our living together, this young woman and I, we made a rather good living, I must say."

Lipton reveals in his new book Inside Inside he would set up sex shows for clients of his lady friend.

He adds, "I had to accompany my clientelle to the Rue Pigalle, which is where these things occurred. And then I'd take them up to the room and I had to remain there because they were very nervous, they were young Americans for the most part... and they didn't speak French."

Eh, all he does nowadays is pimp other actors on his show, so he really hasn't changed that much....

One of the GOP candidates, Rudy Giuliani, thrice-married, is a serial adulterer and philanderer, pimps killing babies and homosexual marriage, believes in sanctuary cities and illegal immigration. Compared to that, Lipton’s sins are a trifle.

My wife's grandfather, who was in the Army during WWII and stationed in Europe for a few years after the wars end, has admitted that a couple times he hired a French prostitute while stationed there. This was, of course, before he was married, but his wife still gives him dirty looks every time he tells that story.

His response is usually something like, "What? I was a lonely guy in the Army, a long way from home. You did what you had to do."

If Lipton wants to clean up his act, he can stop pimping mediocre Hollywood actors such as Ben Afflect and Gwynneth Paltrow.

Will Farrell’s impersonation of this pompous, pimping windbag is hysterical. In this clip, he captures him to a tee, and (I have to admit) Alec Baldwin is quite funny as Charles Nelson Reilly.

Roller blade drunk down the Champs Elyssee, wearing nothing but pair of gold sequined hot pants and carrying a boom box blaring Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff"?

Actual sight witnessed by me about 7 years ago. It was a guy, too.

LOL. After reading the first 30 some post of this thread, I just have to wonder why so many freepers spend so much time watching shows they purport to despise.

Soon to be flamed for saying so, but the episode on which Robin Williams is the guest gets me rolling on the floor laughing. Yes, I think he’s funny, hilarious at times. Unfortunately, the writing for his movies typically stinks. But improvisationally, wow. Hopefully this doesn’t count as a thread hijack.

Well, I am grateful for the post. It confirms for me that Mr. Lipton is a very, very strange man.

Big surprise, ay?

It’s a strangely addictive car wreck of a show. On the one hand the way he slurps celebs is pretty disturbing, on the other hand he somehow finds a way to ask some pretty interesting questions that you never hear anybody else ask.

In 1996 we visited an old friend in Paris who lived in the 16th.

Every night he and I would light up some cigars and walk from Victor Hugo Square to the Arc de Triumph.

We passed many, many hookers in their little black dresses, though they would never make eye contact with us. They would quickly approach any car that pulled to the curb.

My friend said they could be arrested for soliciting pedestrians, but not motorists.

Go figure.

Several years later we met in Italy. While motoring on the Autostrada, he told us about the Italian hookers who haunted shoulders of the highways with their little charcoal grills, used to stay warm on cool evenings. His wife called them ‘Campfire Girls’.

Reminds me of my one and only experience in Amsterdam. My friends and I wandered into the red light district and were standing around, goggle eyed at the spectacle. Then we started getting pelted with empty bottles, cigarette packs, and other trash and realized that some of the "Window" girls were defending their territory (from four college girls, I guess we were competition.) Creeped out beyond words, we found our way back to the main drag near the train station.

It got worse from there, and needless to say, Amsterdam will never be my favorite city.

Dude, believe me — I’m kicking myself for that. I had my crappy little Nikon Kool Pix back then with the ten minute motion delay feature — so I tried, but he was long gone before I was able to focus and get a blurry pic of the street.

I don’t believe him. The guy’s a nerd. I mean, what self-respecting prostitute would ask him to be their pimp.
I’d be willing to bet he was all excited he knew the phone number or address of a French hooker and if one of his friends asked, he’d recommend her. Just like when a friend asks if you know a good plumber or dentist. This nerd was probably in the library every night.
