I agree this looks like a good move. He did pretty well with the Marlins despite having the lowest payroll in baseball.
Joe Torre was always the classiest guy in the Yankee organization. Joe Girardi has a similar reputation.
I’m glad to see this. Better him than Mattingly.
As a Brewers fan, I sympathize.
But it's a business. Those teams draw ratings, those teams pull in the money. I can't fault ESPN for that.
Checking out the MLB.com regular season schedules for playoff teams...
Yankees 29 national broadcasts (FOX and ESPN)
Red Sox 23 national broadcasts + 3 nationally broadcast spring training games
Cleveland 10 national broadcasts
Angels 2007 broadcast schedule is already gone
Rockies 0 national broadcast games
Diamondbacks 3 national broadcast games
Cubs 19 national broadcast games
Phillies 16 national broadcast games
It’s amazing that a team can get to the World Series and not have a single game shown nationally until the playoffs.
“Everytime the Sox Play Network”?
I think they have an exclusive contract with the Wisconsin football team. They’re on every single week unless they play Northern Illinois.
True. Sometimes I just get emotional about it and there you go...
Well, ESPN is headquartered here in Connecticut (Bristol), in the heart of "Sox or Yankees?" territory.
I often see people whining about this here on FR. You'd think more of "us" would get it. Its the free market and it works. Teams with a big following..normally larger markets with traditional franchises.. mean more revenue to media outlets. The socialist answer would be to mandate equal coverage for each team similar to the old NCAA football requirements prior to the CFA coming on board. The result would be fewer choices for fans.
