'24' and the Writers' Strike (not gonna be airing in Jan)
Buddy TV ^ | 11/6/07 | -Oscar Dahl, BuddyTV Senior Writer

Posted on 11/07/2007 9:23:42 AM PST by BurbankKarl

The seventh season of 24 has been snake bit. Maybe it's a season that us viewers just aren't meant to see. First, FOX denied the 24 producers the funding to go shoot a significant portion of the season in Africa and production was delayed. Production was delayed again when writers and producers simply weren't ready to shoot. Then, Kiefer Sutherland got a DUI, almost derailing the whole thing. Then, production got delayed again thanks to the California wild fires. And now, the writers' strike is here and production will soon come to a complete halt.

According to 24's first female President Cherry Jones, it looks like the show will be able to get eight episodes filmed before everything is shut down. This is more than I thought would be ready, but it really doesn't matter. Word is that unless FOX knows all 24 episodes will be ready to run continuously, they won't air any of them. So, unless the strike is resolved very soon, fans can probably kiss that early January premiere date goodbye.

Although it might be tempting for FOX to burn off those first eight episodes during the strike, it's a better decision to hang on and wait for the entire season to be ready. You're only going to give 24 fans a gigantic set of blue balls if you air the first eight episodes without having any idea when the following sixteen will follow. The harsh reality of this writers' strike is really starting to hit home. Come January, if the two sides have not come to a resolution, we will witness television Armageddon. Even if you love reality shows, the sheer volume that will be on network TV during the strike is going to be insane. And it's scary to think about, but if the writers' strike lasts through next summer, the Fall 2008 TV schedule will be (literally) all reality. Please don't let it come to this, Hollywood.

Too bad, that’s the only TV show I like. Otherwise the set doesn’t go on for months at a time.

I think calling most of what Hollywierd and the counter culture maggots in NY do as "art" is a huge stretch.

I love ‘24’ and have been a huge fan since the first season. That said, the show has declined a bit and too many gimmicks are overplayed, ie., the last-second phone calls that come just as something big is about to happen. (The last-second phone calls to “President Logan” two years ago got embarrassing.) I would prefer that nothing be rushed, and that the producers take whetever time is necessary to produce a quality show.

Wasn’t planning to watch 24 (I mean “8”) anyways. It’s kind of old and I’m tired of watching people I don’t respect and have very little in common with. Gots me plenty of other good watchin’ on other things.

This might work out for me.

I just got interested in LOST this April.
I’ve been catching up by renting the DVDs.
I’m in the middle of Season 2 now.
Maybe I’ll be caught up by the time it airs.

Can’t they just ditch the writers entirely, and get some new people in to write? God knows, they couldn’t do worse than the talentless clods who currently write for television.

Actually due to start in Feb. They also have 8 episodes. The brains behind the show said they did not rewrite episode 8 to leave it as a cliffhanger just in case this doesn’t get wrapped up in time. They compared the way it will end as putting down a Harry Potter book right in the middle.

Unfortunately, the actors are due to strike in June of next year, so we probably won’t get more than these 8 episodes. They haven’t decided if they will add the additional 8 scheduled episodes to the next season - which was originally only to be 16 episodes.

I think this is the nail in the coffin for both Lost and 24.

Not sure why I should care about this strike. Seems as if every time I turn around; scheduling has shifted, reruns are inserted into programs’ new episode time slots, the “season” has ended, or shows are abruptly canceled.

In short, I cannot count on any programming.

Fortunately, I have built a good library of movies and shows I want to watch...many of which are still new to me. With the inevitable old series reruns, my “video” library, and books I expect to be well entertained for a long time.

Will do my own programming and let the strikers starve!

Hardly the fault of the writers, is it?

I'd rather the Big Media companies starve - this is one strike where I'm firmly with the strikers.

This whole ‘going green’ thing NBC is doing, and then forcing the shows to spend time preaching to us, I’ve decided to just not watch NBC this week.

I really would have liked NBC to just completely shut down for a week, using no power, no broadcasting, no lights, nothing. Of course, they wouldn’t be on the air to pat themselves on the back or preach to us about global warming then could they.

I have liked the terrorist stories. I can live without them, my life isn’t wrapped up in 24 or any series anymore. Just tired of actors who can’t just act without having to proseltyze to us and have some of the worst personal lives you can imagine.

Think about it this way - most of the people you watch donate large sums of money to keep the liberal democrats you and I hate the most in office. Clinton. Kennedy. Feinstein. Boxer. Schumer. They are ardent liberals. I just don’t want to watch these kinds of people anymore.

Thanks for this info. I hope you're wrong about the impact of the strike on the show, it's a bright spot not only for ABC but for network TV in general.

I think the writers of 24 got full of themselves after the show won all those emmy’s for season five. Last year sucked. I found myself in the middle of episodes starting to drift back to happier episodes where Jack would decapitate someone, or torture a suspect. After the nukes went off last year it was all down hill.

These miserable greenies are demonstrating for us the true goal of the watermelons: shut down everything and let the humans live like natives in Africa. Now I won’t have to turn off my TV whenever 24 airs to reduce my carbon footprint. They are doing it for me. Cool. Even more cool is that their Al Gore story line may never see the light of day.

‘24’ Star Sutherland: ‘Global Warming Is A Crime For Which We Are All Guilty!’

Notable quotes from the message thread at

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2007/07/21/24-star-global-warming-crime-which-we-are-all-guilty

“I do not take it lightly of being accused of being a “global criminal.”

“Hey, they could do even more if they didn’t bother to film it at all! And then they could REALLY do the planet a favor and save the carbon that would be used to broadcast it!

“To actually admit that they will not only make physical changes to limit their energy use (fine - go ahead) but that they will politicize that position in story lines is almost beyond the realm of entertainment and instantly reduces their credibility in regards to their image of showing the blunt truth about the war on terror.

“Another reason to turn it off and read about the Loons here. As someone who worked in this biz for twenty years, I can attest that no industry is more full of wasteful poseurs than the Film and TV industry. The whole Biz is full of idling cars with either their heater or AC systems on full with the windows down, while they fill trash bag after trash bag with coffee cups, burnt out AA batteries, half used up paint cans, etc. They all must constantly be eating foods trucked in from all corners of the earth. One must show up to work in a vehicle that shows ones individuality. Either an old Studebaker with Zero emission controls that runs like crap or whatever German product costs the most for those signing the cheques.

“Oh and by the way, Keifer... hate to point this out but on your watch TWO nukes have been detonated on US soil raising the ambient temperature to a million degree C.

Really???

I’m in the middle of Season 2 of LOST and its some of the most bizzare, intense and original stuff that I’ve only seen previously in the early ‘X-Files’ shows.

While most shows avoid any discussion of ‘faith’ and do all they can to mock anyone who believes in an absolute sense of morals, this show comes right out and makes the strong Christians into heros. In general the show is anti-PC, but doesn’t make a point of being anti-PC.

So far, its a captivating and refreshing show.

What happens (in general) after Season 2 to make it unwatchable?

Even though you didn’t ask me - my biggest complaint about Lost over the past 2 seasons was ridiculous scheduling. I know that it’s a tough show to produce, but it got really annoying that it would be on for a couple weeks, off for a month, etc. I was ready to stop watching at one point just because of that.

So watching it on DVD saves you that pain.

My other complaint is that they don’t wrap up enough story lines before introducing new ones. But I don’t know how annoyed I would have been by that if I’d been watching them all back to back.

But I’m too invested in the show to give up on it now. Well, I was until this strike through a wrench in things.

That's hour one.

Next, the CIA puts out their 407th contract on Jack and he has to hide out in a crack house in Detroit.
