Currently have AVG antivirus free edition and ad-aware free edition. Is AVG antispyware necessary, or is it overkill?

It was free previously, as well as a premium version that costs money. Kim Komando still says it's free: http://www.komando.com/downloads/category.aspx?id=1260
You will still get the "nag" screens, asking you to but the premium version.

Well, I now have free AVG anti-spyware. That seems to be working fine so I’ll just stick with it. At least I save myself the subscription renewal price on SpySweeper. Next year I get rid of Norton anti-virus.

It used to be called Ewido Anti-Trojan til Grisoft bought it out and repackaged it as AVG Anti-Spyware. AVG also offers a free Anti-Rootkit tool.
