Windows XP trounced Windows Vista in all tests, regardless of the versions used or the amount of memory running on the computer, says Devil Mountain Software.
In the latest Mac versus PC ad, that put-upon Windows guy quietly concedes he's "downgrading" from Vista to XP. He may have good reason: new tests show that the older XP runs common productivity tasks significantly faster than Microsoft's newest operating system.
Researchers at Devil Mountain Software, a Florida-based developer of performance management tools, have posted data from their most recent Windows performance tests -- and Vista, even after it's been upgraded to the new Service Pack 1 beta package, is shown to be a laggard.
"The hoped for performance fixes [from Vista SP1] that Microsoft has been hinting at never materialized," said Devil Mountain researchers, in a blog post summarizing their results.
The researchers compared patched and unpatched versions of Vista and XP running Microsoft Office on a dual-core Dell notebook. The results revealed the time taken to complete Office productivity tasks such as the creation of a compound document and presentation materials.
Devil Mountain researchers ran a mix of tests comparing existing versions of the operating systems -- the original Vista and XP SP2 -- and versions that had been patched with the latest updates -- Vista SP1 beta and XP SP3 beta. Tests were also run on machines with 1 Gbyte and 2 Gbytes of memory.
Windows XP trounced Windows Vista in all tests -- regardless of the versions used or the amount of memory running on the computer. In fact, XP proved to be roughly twice as fast as Vista in most of the tests.

I hate Vista. What a pain.
Vista is the bastard child of Millenium Edition.
Service Pack 1 is lipstick on a pig.
I opted out of Vista with my new Dell laptop, but I retain the certificate if I ever wanted to make the gamble.
I’ve never had any problems with XP Professional.
I was at my Dad’s over Thanksgiving. He’s really sorry he got a Vista machine. I have no intention of “upgrading” my two XP machines any time soon. They’re running fine.
Yeah and what burns me the most is that they try to force Vista on everyone. I cant even use directx 10. wtf?
Love me some XP though! mmmm, mmmmm...
I love Vista, sort of. It’s a nice user interface, and it has a really cool feature that lets you start typing stuff and it finds it in the start menu, which is enormously helpful. HOWEVER, the fact that several of my apps totally stopped working just because I moved to Vista really really pisses me off.

Windows is the Homer Simpson of the computing world. They just can’t ever get it right.

My company with over 10,000 employees is counted in the NEVER group.
I agree!! I bought a Toshiba laptop with 1 gig of RAM, and it was like 98 with 4 megs - SLOW and UNSTABLE! Upgraded to 2 gigs, it is much better, but XP is still superior. Wish I could downgrade!
My XP love me long time.
So the Microsoft geniuses aren’t as smart as they are said to be.
Similar situation here. I bought my wife a new laptop for her home-based business. Thought I was doing a great thing only to find out that there are NO drivers for my HP AIO printer. And none planned. HP’s answer? Let me show you to a new printer, sir. UHG!
Isn’t it part of the EULA that you will not publish any results of benchmarking tests?
I heard that somewhere.
Anybody who owns it knows it..............
Funny that, because they are beginning to hit my bench with viruses on board... I guess it could just be backward compatibility... no, wait... can't be that... it's Vista :P
That's because nobody can use it................
I just wish it would quit asking every day whether I want to cancel or allow the weather channel desktop.
Every time I boot into Vista, it makes me laugh out loud that anybody could have thought it to be a viable consumer OS.
It's big, it's slow, and it's like driving an aircraft carrier after a speedboat.
And, oh yes -Vista is running on a 3.0 GHz 8-core Xeon Mac Pro with 8 GB of RAM.
Resistance is futile.
You are not alone. I too, love the search feature on the start bar and in the explorer windows. Although I do believe the benchmark tests showed XP faster, I haven’t noticed a performance issue with my Vista notebook. I had one app that wouldn’t work, but I figured out how some hacks and was able to get it running again.
I can’t stand the UAC (User Account Control) though. Nothing like being asked for permission every time you try to accomplish something. I turn off UAC immmediately whenever I receive a Vista machine.
“My company with over 10,000 employees is counted in the NEVER group.”
Mine, in the 30,000 range, IS planning a Vista upgrade.
Luckily, they are so slow and out-of-date that an upgrade is unrealistic.
Say, does anyone on this computer thread (or another) want to answer some questions I have about graphics cards for laptops? I don’t feel like posting a whole new thread. Please advise if you are interested.
Why would sane consumers pay more for less?
Microsoft has a fix for that. They will stop supporting XP.
Neither do I...ever.
So for now, stick w xp. But isn't Microsoft going to discontinue servicing xp at some point?
I have XP home. Runs alright, but I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a small partition over the weekend to try out. It blazes past XP. I’m keeping it, and will eventually only use XP for such apps I can’t get on Ubuntu like Quicken.
Security by obscurity....
That poster on that site said that he supposed it was to have DRM issues imbedded in the code so deep that they will always have the market cornered to a degree, and I beleive it. I think Office 2007 has changes that are for the sake of furthering that market cornering issue as well and they just want to make cross-platform work as impossible as they can to milk money from the business community.
I don't know anything about that industry -- I am only a consumer, but a disgrunted one.
Yikes.... I hate to think about how much $$$ the conversion to Vista cost. Nothing works the way it used to under WinXP.
If you don’t have to buy a new machine, stay away from this doggy named VISTA.
(unhappy user)
LOL! Me too! I give it a great big ~eh~ :D
Much ado about nothing as far as I can see... But I will tell you, I downgraded my laptop back to XP, just to see, and boy, does that thing smoke! An immense difference, and that is comparing the two with Aero turned off too!
Sadly, it was only temporary- I had to blow it back to Vista so I can learn to hack the bloody thing. Unfortunate, though it be, I would betcha MS is NOT gonna back off of Vista... They never do...

I’ve always liked XP and have used it since it first came out. I have had almost no problems with it at all, which is just one of the many reasons why I will NOT upgrade to Vista until I absolutely have no choice.
I have the Vista DVD (provided by Dell when I bought my computer last year) but I’m still using XP. I may install Vista after SP1 comes out but I’m still not certain that I will. It depends on how SP1 is received, and reviewed.

I could've told them that.
"A recent InformationWeek survey found that 30% of businesses have no plans to upgrade their computers to Vista -- ever."
Problem is, Microsoft will eventually stop selling/supporting XP, and they'll essentially have to "upgrade".
Considering 32 bit processors can't access more than 4 GB, Vista will probably be Microsoft's last 32 bit operating system.
And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your PC can do for you, but what you can do for your PC.
Thanks, I’ll stick with Apple’s rockin OS Leopard. Spaces just rocks.
I’ve been through that circus. They are pretty much impossible to get independently for a pre-constructed laptop, in my experience. It might be doable if you are making a homebrew lappy. However, you definitely know more than me about it in that case! :)
I’m still using 98...lol

Hmm, they have the internet on computers now. -Homer Simpson
I used a Commodore 64 from 1981 through 1988 or so. A whopping 39k of usable memory. Never did a single upgrade to it...OS, RAM, disc...nothing.
And yet, the software and games for the system continually improved from year to year even though the platform, itself, did not improve.
This is the result of writting better, more optimized code as time went on. They were forced to squeeze everything they could out of what they had to work with and did it.
Now? Buy more RAM. Get a quad CPU. Get a $350 video card. Nobody optimizes anything anymore which is why Vista is garbage.
They quit supporting 98 years ago. It still runs, and is probably even faster than XP.
Can't run the latest Microsoft software? No problem, either run your old software, or go open source.
LOTS of eye-candy, that is true, but there are also serious changes that really suck:
Your DVDR/CDR burning will default to MS's default POS new burning format- A dirty bugger it is, too, as no other OS can currently read the thing. It will do a standard burn, but that requires a fair bit of burrowing.
Windows Explorer is WAY different- not necessarily hard to master, but I am already getting calls about how to get around in the lousy thing...
Standard directories are drammatically changed- Where Windows "puts stuff" is much different. Don't expect any hard coded scripts to work.
And etc... I wouldn't say any of the above are critical (except the CDWriter, which will make me cuss if I am not careful), but the changes are there, and can be bothersome.
