TUSCALOOSA | Joe Namath has accomplished some impressive things in his lifetime.
In 1964, he led the University of Alabama to a national championship under equally legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
That same year, he signed with the NFL’s New York Jets for a then-record-breaking salary of $400,000.
During his first year in the pros in 1965, he was named American Football League Rookie of the Year, and just four years later, Namath guaranteed the Jets would defeat the Baltimore Colts to win Super Bowl III, and came through on that promise.
At 9 a.m. today in Coleman Coliseum, the Pro Football Hall of Famer will add one more thing to his long list of exemplary exploits: A college degree.
“It took a lot of effort,” the 64-year-old Namath said Friday. “And I’m, again, happy that it’s accomplished.”

I was but a wee child when Joe Willie played at ‘Bama, but they were good times. Sigh.
I remember him as a fearsome Jet QB.
I also remember him being grossly inebriated on National TV.
Somehow, even though he’s sober, I can’t wrap my beans around this one.
Maybe he’ll finally get to kiss Suzie.
It took him five years to earn 17 credits and get a degree in Interdisciplinary
Studies, whatever that is?
Sorry. I really did try to watch the whole thing.
My first thought was that the booze really did leave him missing some Major league brain cells.
My second thought was that he never really had any at all.
I don’t dislike Joe, and I appreciate his sobriety.
He may have been a faboo QB but he needs to find a better way than public speaking to get his message out, whatever that message may be.

It actually takes 30 hours to complete the program IF your prior credits are accepted. And the courses are not easy. There is a whole lot more reading and writing involved in EXD courses than in traditional classes on campus. I’ve taken correspondence courses at Bama, and they are much easier. I don’t know what his specific area of study was, but it takes a lot of work to complete those 30 hours. I know. I entered the program a few months after Joe did.
My husband is a graduate of the program, and he worked very hard to earn all As. He had already earned all his credits for his interdisciplinary study major (more science courses than I ever want to think about), but he never earned all the credits he needed in other subjects. When he went back to school, he took all Writing courses because writing is his love. He took the hardest professors and did his share of cursing them from long distances. But after reflecting on their criticism, he followed their advice and earned excellent grades. He would not have done that as a young college student. He was too rebellious.
There are students in the EXD program who know what they want to do with their degrees. They can design their classes around those goals and present their completed work to their employers. You would be amazed at the depth of courses designed by students and faculty. The program requires a great deal of discipline on the part of the students, and it requires a willingness among faculty to work one on one, often via mail and email, with adult students who usually cannot pop in to campus on a regular basis.

PS...IIRC, he signed for $400,000 over four years AND a convertible.
I have a friend who graduated this morning from UA....told her that I will go to my grave never asking for anything else if she will get me Joe Willie’s autograph!
