Wild boar scatters French Christmas shoppers: police

POITIERS, France (AFP) - It was no bull in a china shop, but a wild boar rampaged through a clothes shop in western France on Saturday before being felled by bullets, police said.

Christmas shoppers and employees were evacuated from the store and the 90-kilo (198-pound) boar began charging at police, before falling in a hail of bullets early in the afternoon.

Just how the animal entered the shop, located in a commercial area near the city of Poitiers, remains a mystery. But three boars were spotted during the day in the region bordering the countryside, a police statement said.

The other two apparently returned to their usual habitat.

Local forest service officials believe the boars are part of a larger group they are trying to relocate which have been spotted in the region, the statement said.

I can’t believe I am the first to say,,,,so what weapon brought him down?

I had thought there would be a spirited discussion involving arguments about the kind of ammo and how to cook him by now.

Well, it was in France so a discussion of the appropriate sauce would also expected.

France and Pigs.

We were on an exercises is France years ago and were to link up with another element at a location on the map. The translation from the map was something like Pig Woods.

When we got into the woods, after climbing a six foot wire fence, we noticed some little piggies back in the underbrush.

Our other element linked up with us just before dark and I showed my buddy a nice place to set up his stuff for the night - On a little foot path.

In the middle of the night we hear a blood curdling scream and “There's a pig in my hooch.” In the moon light we can see his poncho flapping up and down, grunts and squeals renting the air, little piggies running everywhere and him cursing a blue streak.

We were laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes. Momma and the babies had been walking down the game path and she went up under the poncho and stepped on him. He, of course jumped up and screamed, which caused her to try and jump up but was held down by the poncho and the fight was on.

He was still my friend in the morning.

With wild hog, yeah. You want to boil that a long time. It's tough, stringy and gamy. The chops and ham, ew.

The ribs, on the other hand, if you cook 'em slow, might be some good eats.

Les bois des cochones?

Hey. I took French for three years. I have to try to get some use out of it every now and then.

In the middle of the night we hear a blood curdling scream and “There's a pig in my hooch.”

If I had a nickel for every woman who ... oh, never mind.

He was still my friend in the morning.

I love a great story with a happy ending.

I think someone can really ‘pig out’ on that boar. Especially if they eat like a hog. Though, watching them might be a bit boaring.

Wild boar sausage is outstanding. The chops need alot of time in the crock pot, however.

And remember, a Javelina is more like a rat than a TRUE wild boar.

La belle france is overun ... again. This time it is not Panzer Divisions. It is feral pigs. There are real wild boar in France sangliers, and they are great huunting and even better eating.

The problem is that domestic swine have crossed with them to give our faithful allies the cochangliers or the pig half-breed. Instead of the family planning of the true wild boar with a couple-few piglets, these suckers have 10-12 to a litter just like a domestic pig. They are overrunning many areas causing massive environmental damage and can wipe out a farmer's vegetable crop overnight..

They hunt them pretty heavily but just can't seem to keep the problem manageable. They are also pretty good eating and can get pretty large. So far the French government has not entered into surrender negotiations with them, but there are beaucoup des collaborateurs who think they are cute and leave food about for them!

Ha ! I knew one day my hometown would make headlines at Freerepublic ! :D

The boar was scared by a hunting party which had been organized to bag a few of the boars that abound in the woods surrounding Poitiers. This rather small boar decided to run the other way, and probably thought it had found itself a nice little place to hide.

We get a lot of boar- and roe deer-related incidents in these parts. Even the large hunt aficionados have trouble keeping both populations in check.
