Fishmonger Fired For Tackling Shoplifter

POSTED: 5:35 pm EST December 27, 2007
UPDATED: 5:49 pm EST December 27, 2007

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A Ypsilanti man wants his job back at an Ann Arbor grocery store after he was fired because he tried to stop a shoplifter on Sunday.

SoundOff: Who went too far: Whole Foods or Scholtz?

John Scholtz said he lost his job as a fishmonger at a Whole Foods Market in Ann Arbor after he knocked a suspected shoplifter to the ground and detained him.

Scholtz was fired on Monday.

"Our policy is clear and listed in the employee booklet," said Kate Klotz, a Whole Foods spokeswoman.

"The fact that the employee in question touched the suspect is grounds for termination."

Scholtz said he was acting as a private citizen and not as a Whole Foods employee.

"The fact that I worked at the store at (the time of the robbery) is coincidental," he told The Ann Arbor News.

"If I had went over to the book store on my break and they were being ripped off, I would have helped them."

I think it totally rules that someone still uses the word “fishmonger.”

That’s too bad, I shop at Whole Foods allot.

I guess I’ll have to find another place to do business.

The coventional wisdom would be that he should have notified the loss prevention professional who also works at that location. The problem is that there are so few professionals in loss prevention...

If the employer doesn't want to risk the liability of an injured "suspect" and it's the employer's property that is being stolen, I have to agree with Whole Foods here.

Sure, I'd like to see every thief get his a$$ kicked but this ain't Gotham and this guy ain't Batman

It does sound cool. In almost every other use I can think of adding “monger” to a word make it sound like a bad thing to do.

By the way, love your tagline...or should I say: I can dig it.

So if I shoplift at The Bunny Ranch, do I get tackled by a whoremonger?

The Whole Foods in Raleigh is such a liberal Mecca that I try to avoid it most of the time.

Even the heavily pierced and tattooed staff is less offensive than the effete liberal a-holes shopping there with the "NO 'W'" stickers on their BMWs.

The few times that I venture in there to find something that's not available elsewhere, I feel the need to immediately fly home and take a shower.

Interestingly, there aren’t a lot of words ending in monger.

“Sure, I’d like to see every thief get his a$$ kicked but this ain’t Gotham and this guy ain’t Batman”

If that happened at a Whole Foods, they’d have to bring in grief counselors and close for a day as the employee witnesses recovered from seeing such a “brutal and inhumane” act.

“So if I shoplift at The Bunny Ranch, do I get tackled by a whoremonger?”

Strangely, “fishmonger” was another term for a pimp back in the Middle Ages — hence, Will Shakespear’s use of the word.

I'm just surprised to hear that a Whole Foods employee was able to knock somebody to the ground. At the Whole Foods where I shop, all the male workers are on the effeminate side - if you catch my drift.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

On the other end of the spectrum, the female workers are kind of scary. I think they are all related to Janet Reno in some way.

I don't usually buy meat at Whole Foods because it is so outrageously expensive. I usually get my meat at the butcher shop anyway. But when I do buy meat at Whole Foods, I make sure I take it down a check-out aisle with a male cashier. Because the female cashiers give you dirty looks as they are all apparently vegetarians. The male cashiers don't seem to mind the meat so much rolling down their aisle. And I notice they usually check me out as well. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm just saying there's not a whole lot of Bush voters in that establishment.

Hahahaha.

I've never been to Whole Foods, the closest one to me is in Ann Arbor. Is it simply overpriced or are there nice imported foods, etc. also?

Well it is overpriced but the quality of the food is excellent. You just have to get used to the clientèle. I’m talking hippie-dippie to the extreme. Picture a casting call for the Electric Kool-Aid Test. Or a look-alike contest for Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin. Makes the average Starbucks crowd look like an NRA meeting.

I can count on one hand how many times I've been to WF and that's only because they were the only ones who had the needed product. I despise the place with it's freaky liberal customers. I can't stand even driving through the parking lot.

The last time I was there... at the check out stand, my wife was jumping around like a crack baby!

I didn't know until we got to the car that she was shielding me from a fat freak with a 'F George W' tee shirt.

She knew that I would have made a scene.

Unfortunately, if you can get through the herbal soaps and crystal health pendants, they have some really good meat and seafood that you can't find elsewhere.

I limit my trips to about twice a year... otherwise you'd see me on America's Most Wanted!
