Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who turned 81 last week, jokingly dismissed the comments of a Texas A&M yell leader Thursday night that Paterno was on his death bed and someone needs to find him a casket.
But its no joking matter to the Aggies, who sent the yell leader home and have issued numerous apologies to various Penn State officials.
The remark came at an Alamo Bowl-sponsored pep rally for fans of both schools. Penn State fans booed loudly after the remark from the yell leader, one of five A&M upperclassmen who fill the high-profile spirit role at the school.
Paterno brushed aside the incident at a press conference today.
I think everybodys got to take things with a grain of salt, he said. Its some young guy up there and hes trying to be funny, and maybe hes accurate. I dont know.
In addition to issuing several apologies, A&M might further discipline the student, who was not identified.
Further action is being considered, but for now he was simply sent home, Dean Bresciani, A&Ms vice president for student affairs, said today.
Neither Paterno nor A&M interim coach Gary Darnell actually heard the comments. Darnell said his wife broke into tears when she apologized to Paternos wife for the remarks, which Darnell said were highly inappropriate in a public setting in front of fans from both schools.
That is so demeaning to the Aggie spirit to come across like that, Darnell said. That is not representative of what an Aggie is.
How do you keep an Aggie busy??
(See other side...)
Weak humor... /off
Did you hear about the Aggie that was driving and saw a sign that said Clean Restrooms Ahead - by the time he got to campus he had cleaned 23 of them.
Q: What do you get when you drive through College Station real slowly?
A: A degree from TAMU.
JoePa takes it all in stride.
Joe Pa is a class act. You seldom if ever see him screaming at or berating his players in public. He is intense and competitive, but he earns respect rather than demands it.
He's also a Conservative Republican.
JoePa has more class in his little finger than the entire student body at A&M.
JoePa has more class in his little finger than the entire student body at A&M.
Q: What is the difference between the Aggies and Rice Crispies?
A: Rice Crispies know what to do in a bowl.
Didja hear about the Aggie that stayed up all night studying for his urine test?
Why are you trying to make this about an entire university and 40,000+ students instead of letting it rest on the shoulders of one guilty idiot? It says as much about you as it does about the one guilty idiot.
Paterno is an embarrassment at this point. He should have retired long ago, but his vanity stands in the way.
I’ve hear worse said at a yell practice about the Longhorn coach - usually involving a romantic evening with a cow. Of course, that was 30 years ago.
On the other hand, doing that in front of the coach’s wife is a bit mean-spirited.
Speaking of low class comments in the lead-up to a bowl game, I happened to catch the 1987 Fiesta Bowl on ESPN Classic this afternoon. I love that game...
“JoePa has more class in his little finger than the entire student body at A&M.”
I know you didn’t mean to, but I’m glad you said it twice.
Q. What are the best three years for an Aggie football player?
A. Second grade.
On the third try.
If there’s a more respected coach in this country I don’t know who it could be. He’s loved here in Alabama because he has something many coaches don’t and that’s Class. JoePa wrote the book on being a class act. All the rest are only pretenders.

Q: What does an Aggie get on his SAT?
A: Drool.
(** cough cough denial cough cough **)
You got that right!
Also, being an Aggie, chances are the "guilty idiot" is also a conservative Republican.
According to the Princeton Review:
Students Most Nostalgic for Ronald Reagan
Based on students’ assessment of their personal political views.
1 Texas A&M University-College Station
2 Grove City College
3 Samford University
4 Hampden-Sydney College
5 Brigham Young University (UT)
A&M is one of the most patriotic and conservative major schools in the country. Kids sometimes do and say stupid things but it's hardly a reflection on the entire school.
Humm, come to think of it adults sometimes do and say stupid things....Hopefully the Huckster isn't a reflection on all republicans.
They have ice cream named after JoePa on campus - Joe-Pa Stachio... he is a beloved figure.
Did he stab them?
Oops.... make that Peachy Paterno....
No, in fact if memory serves me right an Aggie football player forcibly escorted him off the field.
and......... he loves ice cream after the game.
Better than this was the time the (excuse for) Rice band did a half-time spoof on the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. The Corps surrounded the (excuse for) Rice band and didn’t let them leave the stands after the game.
Not true, you have to stop.
I agree. This was one student...NOT the whole student body. I’m glad Paterno took it with a grain of salt and I’m happy knowning the Aggie hierarchy took it upon themselves to do something about it. I do not reign down nastys on a whole group for the actions of one nitwit.
Joe Pa is in the same ballpark as University of Iowa’s Hayden Fry. ..and both of them are conservative republicans
The kids comments were pretty bad but not as bad as the whole Rutgers student body cheering at the Army/Rutgers Football Game this year.
No. If I remember correctly . . .
One of the many Aggie traditions limit who can step inside the white lines at Kyle Field. Cheerleaders from other schools are not allowed on the field.
The student head of the Corps patrols around the field in uniform, including knee boots and jodphurs, with a sabre on his belt.
A female cheerleader from SMU stepped on the field during a cheer and the student head of the Corps drew his sword and charged her.
A male SMU cheerleader sidestepped into the Corps leader's path and hit him with a single blow to the chin. It knocked the Corps leader on his rear (there was memorable series of photos in the newspaper at the time showing the Corps leader sailing backwards through the air, sabre still raised).
The result was that the Corps leader is no longer allowed to carry a sabre on the field, if I remember correctly.
The Aggies have a outstanding tradition called Aggie Muster (Google it).
A&M also has a tradition called "Squeeze 'em Aggies." To show you're feeling the same pain as the football team, you grab two certain delicate twin parts of your anatomy and squeeze 'em.
In WWII, Texas A&Ms 14,000 officers in service exceeded the number from West Point, and about 1,000 Aggies gave their lives in the service of our country. Twenty-nine Aggies served at flag rank. Seven Aggies were awarded the Medal of Honor.
College Station: Where men are men and the sheep are nervous.
Keep braying. I don’t know who you are, but your nastiness is sure telling us alot about you.
A&M has lost 14 of its alumni in Iraq and Afghanistan, most recently, about 2 weeks ago.
don’t think I knew about that
Flunk out of UT? I usually find that the biggest badmouthers are the ones who never managed to get their degree from that university. The alums usually have a little more class.
Yell Leaders expected to dialog a series of jokes/fart-offs etc. to energize the student body. Event may also include
boy-meets-girl=tee hee jokes. A&M officials bedwetted if
this was a Yell Practice. If this was a multi school function, well it was just a bad idea, but these hurt people should just suck-it-up!!
and
Neither team was good enough for a bowl spot this year, but
it’s easy with 32 bowls.
and
Jinbo , your pics are good! the students are sawing varsity horns off & students are “humping” it practicing yells, no other school does that- once again showing A&M uniqueness,
The saber incident shows smu students breaking Kyle field rules on staying off the field, the Aggie is assigned to
make sure this does not happen. Aggies follow other schools
rules but expect same for other schools visiting to also abide by A&M campus rules. thanks again for the pics.
I'm saddened by that news but not surprised by it, Clara Lou. My respect goes out to all Aggies in service to this country, and my condolences go out to the families of these fallen Aggies.
There are quite a few prominent "military" colleges/universities in the U.S. where the students play soldier for four years, then put on a tie and class ring which serve to grant entrance to certain country clubs and social clubs within the state. Those students in the Corps at Texas A&M don't seem to fit that mold; instead, a large percentage serves our country.
Hook 'em Horns AND Gig 'em Aggies!
