If he was on the deck and someone came into the front door..so long, farewell.
If someone came thru the garage (his domain) he’d show teeth.
He grew more protective as he aged At the age of 1 the world was his friend.
Your post really described me and my friends. Any nut case that runs into us would be standing straight, eyeballs spinning and looking for an escape route.
Same mixed military gear and boots, look like a bunch of pirates when we don’t shave and by the looks of us - somebody, if not all, have some type of weapon. And about half are Good ‘ol Boys so we have that problem covered also.

Unfortunately, in American society today, drunks, derelicts, and druggies have become the citizens of choice for many, many state and local governments. They bring in federal funds (food, housing, medical care, and they employ lots of fat-butted social workers. All at taxpayer expense, of course. So, the local governments make believe there’s nothing they can do about them (even to the point of refusing to enforce loitering laws). And the politicians and their protected vermin live happily ever after. While we foot the bills and suffer the crimes and degradation of our homes. Pretty sich, huh?
In Tara Grinstead’s case, she had a tumultuous relationship with a former boyfriend, and a former student from her school who was essentially stalking her. The 20-year old former student was arrested for banging repeatedly on her door about six months before she disappeared. The relationship with her former boyfriend had her taking long drives and calling in sick because of the emotional stress.
I am always "visibly" armed and careful of anybody I meet out there. There is no sense calling 911 when out there (just ask the Bryants, who tried). Most people you run into are good people but one never knows when or where you will meet a bad one and they may not appear "threatening" (although the one time my alarm bells got working really overtime, they certainly were).
The woods may be a place for solitude but it is not a place where you want to let your guard down, either.

Speaking of “my territory”, it creeps me out that they found her clothes and wallet at the Quiktrip that is practically across the street from me.

From the late 70’s to the early 90’s — our motorcycle “gang” was a group of managers and engineeers from technology corporations in Silicon Valley, an assistant District Attorney from a local town and one venture capitalist..... We did not look unclean, unshaven or slovenly......
On many Sunday mornings, most of the eight of us would make the run to the beach at Santa Cruz, Capitola or Half Moon Bay for breakfast and then back home around Noon.... On long weekends we would frequently run North to Oregon or East to Tahoe or South to Death Valley.....
Rarely using Motels — we would usually just pull off into a forest fire road for the night...ground cloth, sleeping pad, sleeping bag with a throwover to stay dry.
One particular night near Mount Lassen -— there was an uneasiness due to unexplained sounds, and one guy simply mentioned that he had a pistol with him and for those in the group to announce themselves if they needed to move about that evening. This was common practice for those of us from the military...
Well - his announcement produced the acknowledgement that of the eight riders — 7 had pistols! This is in Kalifornicate - where no one had a concealed carry permit!
The assistant District Attorney was the only one without a piece and he was shocked that so many “righteous citizens” were violating the law by carrying weapons....
Our “clean” group of middle aged and affluent bikers, wouldn’t have struck fear into any serial killer -— until perhaps he learned that 7 of 8 were armed and 6 of 8 were “experienced veterans”......
We were just recently house hunting in the area North of Cumming along the Western shore of the now empty Lake Lanier.

No. In National Parks and some other controlled areas, but on much or the trail water is the controlling factor.
Some thru hikers stay in shelter to avoid carrying a tent, but others shun them because of people who stay up all night.
A police officer in Southern Indiana has been convicted twice of murdering his family and he had a lot better alibi than the officer that has been under investigation in this case. I can’t believe he was at a bar that late and then decided to go on rounds with his friend for the rest of the night. Like one officer said, his alibi was to good, although it looked like it had holes in it to me. I wonder if any of the suspects took a lie detector case.

I backpacked the Smokies in the 1970’s and never stayed in shelters, has it changed?
This is very sad. I’m not entirely sure on the timeline, but it seems to me that they announced this guy’s name before they actually caught him. I suppose it may be because he was seen at the time of the disappearance last fall of two hikers, and perhaps he had been ID’d then. Or probably he was a previously convicted sex killer, paroled to hole up in the woods and wait for more victims. I bet we’ll find out that he had a record for things like this.

Check if SC’s CCW license is good in NC, then get one of those. Else you’d have to keep it hidden and risk not being able to obtain a license at a later time.
