Katharine McPhee Joins List of Idol Rejects (Along with Taylor Hicks)
Jossip ^ | 01.11.08

Posted on 01/11/2008 9:48:11 AM PST by Perdogg

Record label BMG has had mixed success with its American Idol artists. On the one hand, standouts like Carrie Underwood go platinum and pick up an armful of Grammys. And Kelly Clarkson, although sometimes causing headaches with her independence, can still deliver mostly solid sales.

And then there’s the underperforming Idol types who aren’t pleasing executives — which is why they’re letting ‘em go from RCA.

With three albums out, Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard was axed. And Taylor Hicks, the unlikely winner of Season 5, was shown the door when the industry quickly learned people will vote for the weirdo, but they won’t buy his album.

The only Idol’s who can sing are Carrie Underwood (good, but not earth shaking vocal quality) and Josh Groban.

The rest just yell.

A
lot.

There has been an active campaign among a segment of the audience to try to push the worst singer to the final ranks.

I have Hicks’s CD. It’s really good. One of the singles from it was a hit on my Adult Contemporary radio station, but none of the other songs from his CD got played. I think the only place you can buy the CD now is from Amazon.com. If Hicks had gotten the help, the push and the promotion that some of the other contestants got, he surely would’ve sold more CDs. Maybe he’ll actually be better off now on his own.

He’s great live; a friend and I went to see him and we both agreed it was the best show we’d ever seen.

She is very very pretty and should get into acting or something. She has a nice sounding speaking voice, but I just didn't go for her music.

She has too much makeup on in that picture. Some advice should not be taken.

Records sold has nothing to do with vocal quality or being a good singer.

There really wasnt much RCA could do for Taylor in PR terms, his sound didnt fit any radio formats other than AC, and AC is such a small piece of the radio pie that it cant drive sales.

That’s radio in 2008 America; It’s all niche, with Top 40 stations just playing the biggest hits from niche radio.

The McPhee failure was financially brutal, RCA spent a fortune just making that disc. Danja produced most of the album and he’s a 50-250 k per-song producer!

I think all the media around AI is overexposing these guys before they even get a chance to get a disc out. It’s best now to go out before the final 3 or 4, the point at which the act is famous enough to sell, but not overexposed to the point that people just want them to go away.

Daughtry put out the #1 selling CD of the year. His concerts are sold out everywhere he goes. I saw him at Sunfest in WPB, FL in 07 and it was a record setting crowd the night he performed. At least 25k were there.

I saw one where this black guy came out who had qualified and his mama was saying....”My baby bout to blow up!! My baby bout to blow up!!”

I also shake my head at the number of flaming metro queers that audition.

Daughtry put out the #1 selling CD of the year.

And he was by far the best singer on that season of American Idol, but the jokesters who "vote for the worst singer" sank him.

If the show is ever to be taken seriously, the fan vote will have to be eliminated or combined with a judges' vote.

You might distinguish from what we once called talent contests from “reality” shows where they throw 10 people in a house and watch them rutt around.

Katharine sings well but doesn't have anything unique to offer. And she has no apparent acting ability. I'd say she should host a TV show or become a news anchor. ;)

Well lemme ask you this.

I know you don’t have much experience with mens restrooms, but why is it that we can stand behind and wait for a guy taking a leak at a urinal, but we feel surprized and awkward and apologize for accidentally opening a door to a guy taking a leak in a stall?

American Idol has put some fresh young talent into the US music scene. Competitors have won Oscars, Grammy's and other awards. One winner has been appearing on broadway for the last year to good reviews. They have provided a lot of entertainment.

The show opened up a talent opportunity which was not previously there in a field that was being dominated by rap and hip-hop.

I don't find that pitiful or sad. I find it refreshing.

We will know when her career is starting to go down hill because she will start running around town with no drawers on and worshipping Scientology.

I don’t buy their music and I don’t listen to it (or most of it). I think Josh Groban and M. Buble (sp) are the only westerners I’ve downloaded lately..... The rest is under the ‘world’ catagory.

OK, there was this Nickleback CD, but it’s more for driving fast on the highway. And I do have Demis Russos....Eh, He’s Greek....nevermind.

Most of the AI music doesn’t interest me and their talent, for the most part is...well... based more on ‘showmanship’ and vocal over-kill than actual quality voices AND real believable emotions. More like if you were blind and had sensitive ears, would you actually buy their stuff?

He’s a rock singer ... sort of along the lines of Nickelback or Creed. His band name uses just his last name ... “Daughtry”.
