'24' star Sutherland released from jail after 48 days on DUI (Jack Bauer Alert!)

GLENDALE, Calif. Kiefer Sutherland has been released from jail after serving 48 days on a drunken driving charge, according to a published report.

A jail spokesman did not immediately return a phone call seeking confirmation of a story on People magazine's Web site saying the 41-year-old actor walked out of jail at 12:05 a.m. Monday, hours earlier than had been expected.

But People quoted police Officer John Balian as saying, "(Kiefer) looked like he was glad to be out," and that Sutherland was wearing a shirt and jeans when he left the facility.

Sutherland - the star of Fox television's drama, "24" - has spent his sentence cleaning sheets, pillowcases and blankets on laundry duty, Balian told The Associated Press on Friday.

"He was very humble, never complained," Balian said. "He didn't give us any problems at all."

Sutherland pleaded no contest in October to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He was sentenced to 30 days, as well as 18 days for violating probation stemming from a 2004 drunken-driving arrest.

After entering his plea last fall, Sutherland issued a statement saying he was "very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers."

He was granted a request to serve his time in suburban Glendale's city jail rather than in the overcrowded downtown Los Angeles County jail. The trade-off was that he could not shave any time off his sentence for good behavior or early release because of overcrowding.

The actor must also serve five years probation and complete an 18-month alcohol education program and attend weekly therapy sessions for six months.

Good luck, Kiefer.

I agree. Keif, with all due respect, you’ve likely got a lot of $$ in your account. Hire a chauffeur or a limo service when you want to go out.

Or go have a long talk with Dennis Hopper.

I heard Lewis Black on TV last eve... he was talking about John Effin’ Kerry: “I listened to the man speak for a couple minutes and I realized: I don’t have enough breadcrumbs to find my way back!”

48 days served on a 48 day sentence. That surprises me.

Actually Hopper has been drink-free in AA for like 25 years. Not too long ago I heard him on the tube attributing his devotion to golf as being possible “because I’m sober now, ha ha”

Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, and Doc Severenson were all longtime AA people (first Doc, then Ed, then Johnny). I heard Doc and McMahon both being interviewed about it over the years.

But there are still lots of “stars” living in Malibu who could give Keifer a hand if he wanted it.

Nick Nolte, Charlie Sheen, and Mel Gibson would not be among them (although Martin Sheen might be).

He has someone with integrity advising him. That bodes well for him.

Good call. Hey, it’d be good to get Hopper as a criminal mastermind in the upcoming season.....

It’s probably how he’d be typecast now that Dennis Hopper is a Republican.

Hopper has such a powerful persona that he doesn’t even need to act anymore.

Script example:
FRED, a Dennis Hopper-like retired business mogul who leads the group to safety in the Amazon jungle.

Director: “Can you play this ringleader more like a nefarious Dennis Hopper?”

Brad Pitt: “For Seventh Monkey I studied Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now.”

I believe Hopper has already been an evil mastermind on '24'. Second season, perhaps? (memory fault exception).

Bauer blew him away on a dock when he was trying (what else?) to get away.

Unlike certain starlets who only serve 4 hours of their sentences.

Hopefully he will sober up. I really like him as an actor and it would be a shame to see him dead with his talent wasted.

For crying out loud, how can he save America if he is in jail for DUI?
