WARREN, Maine — William Flynn depicts himself as a do-gooder, a member of the Jaycees who has a wife and teenage stepdaughter and likes to play softball.

At least that's how he'd like to be seen by a judge, who's considering freeing Flynn early from the 28 years-to-life prison term he got for killing his lover's husband as a teenager in the notorious Pamela Smart murder case.

Since going to prison nearly two decades ago, Flynn has earned a high school equivalency degree and an electrician's helper license, gotten married and raised money for charity. He says in court documents that he has transformed himself into a thoughtful and caring adult, intent on helping others.

Assistant Attorney General Kirsten Wilson said reducing his term would undermine the sentencing goals of punishment, rehabilitation and deterrence.

????

I can't figure the AG's reasoning on this one. It sounds like he has been rehabilitated.

Considering they let so many others out for violent crimes after less time in prison when they're known risks, this doesn't make sense.

They should take that witch Pam Smart out and burn her at the stake for what she did ...to her husband and that boy.

“28 years to life” should mean just that. It hasn’t even been 20. You don’t rationalize an injustice by pointing out other injustices.

Pam Smart still denies her role in the murder.

This kid pulled the trigger, but she played him to the hilt.

Pam Smart was one hot little cookie. If I was an incredibly goofy looking teenage boy whose only sex choices before her were right or left hand, I might be tempted. On a lighter note, if you want to see an incredibly funny black comedy based on the case, rent To Die For

There should be absolutely no question about letting him out of prison early — because he should be dead. He cold-bloodedly and brutally murdered an innocent man, so that he could continue having sex with the guy’s wife. Are we missing something here?

He had his victim get down on his kness and while he begged for his life, he shot him in the head. He did the crime, he should do the full time.

If it was a young woman who committed this awful crime under similar circumstances they would have gotten off with no more than 10 years in jail. He was a young man who was under the influence of an evil woman, and in my opinion should be shown mercy.

Mary Winkler shot her husband in cold blood, and got 210 days in jail:

It’s way past time for men and women to receive equal justice. At present that is often not the case.

As I recall, Pam Smart convinced this 16 year old kid that she was being abused by her husband.

Too bad this isn’t Arkansas, the Huckster would have let him out after a couple of years.

I agree with you. I’m glad he seems to be ‘rehabilitated’ but he did murder an innocent man for his own gain. If serving his full sentence will undermine his rehabilitation, then, that rehabilitation is in serious question.
