Smoking a joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer risk, scientists in New Zealand have found, as they warned of an "epidemic" of lung cancers linked to cannabis.
Studies in the past have demonstrated that cannabis can cause cancer, but few have established a strong link between cannabis use and the actual incidence of lung cancer.
In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal, the scientists said cannabis could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco as its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes.
The method of smoking also increases the risk, since joints are typically smoked without a proper filter and almost to the very tip, which increases the amount of smoke inhaled. The cannabis smoker inhales more deeply and for longer, facilitating the deposition of carcinogens in the airways.
"Cannabis smokers end up with five times more carbon monoxide in their bloodstream (than tobacco smokers)," team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, said in a telephone interview.
"There are higher concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke ... what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on cannabis when there is so much done on tobacco."

I wonder how many times when someone famous who never smoked (tobacco) died of lung cancer, it was caused by smoking pot instead.

Radio talk show host on WRKO 680 a.m. covered the stories saying, "Ok... fine... but smoking is still stinky."
Smokers have been persecuted for a pet peeve gone wild much like the hype about global warming.
And, you know that most of the persecuters (liberals) are more than likely life-long pot smokers... humorous!!!

Those hollywood types, for example, who died of Lung Cancer and never smoked cigarettes, like Andy kaufman, maybe they got it from smoking pot instead—that was my point.
Second hand smoke is another issue: if you think there’s some kind of filter in the human lung that removes carcinogens from exhaled tobacco smoke, then let’s find out about it.
Maybe it would inspire a technology for new filter tip cigarettes.
Then there’s the little fact that the avearge pot smoker smokes about 20x less than the average tobacco smoker.
I know of no pothead that knocks down 20 grams of pot a day. Especially if the pot is good.
Yet 20 grams of tobacco is a pack a day. Anyone know any pack a day smokers?
Fifty years of tobacco and forty years of pot... Why I'll be lucky to make it into my mid-sixties.

Yep. Of every doper I’ve known/met in the last twenty years, other than TWO, all others (about a hundred) were RABIDLY haters of tobacco smokers. Yet none of them thought anything about lighting up a joint in any room of their house, at disneyland, at public parks, in clubs/bars, at bus stops, walking down the street,etc. I remember a distant time when most dopers smoked tobacco too, and the ones who didn’t believed in free love, do it if it feels good, and live and let live. Those were the good old days.
