Emotions ran high as members of a small anti-war group were met with opposition, mistaken for the Kansas based radical group known as Westboro Baptist Church.
Members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, had planned to picket outside NAS Corpus Christi this morning. The group claims they wanted to thank God, for the January 16th helicopter crash that claimed the lives of 3 US sailors based here. The group never showed up, but hundreds of people anticipating their arrival did. An estimated crowd of more than one thousand people including riders with the Patriot Guard took to the streets with pride and patriotism in support of our nation's military.
Several police officers kept a close eye on the crowd and while they expected a peaceful demonstration, they were standing by in case things got out of hand.
There were rumors that a van with members of Westboro Baptist Church had been spotted stuck in traffic (caused by late arriving counter protesters). Anyway for whatever reason they never showed their ugly faces. I'm proud that South Texans scared off those cowards.
There's a video at the linked website.
Here's the video from KRIS TV.

I'll post some pictures as soon as they get emailed to me.
thanks for posting
I have an idea they didn’t show their faces because they didn’t want to leave wearing them sideways.
Watched the video - good for all of those that participated. Fine folks.
This reporter needs to wake up to the reality that many of the so called antiwar (they are largely PRO-Palestinian War and were silent on Bill Clinton’s wars) protesters are RADICALS too every bit as offensive as Fred Phelps’ cult.
Discretion is the better part of valor.

When there is a serious possibility of physical confrontation, they always fail to show cowards.
Good work vs. cowardly no-shows.
God just might have a thing or two to say to them one and I doubt it will be "you're welcome".
thanks, for posting this :)
To bad the leader of this church decided to call it Baptist. Most Baptist are down to earth, God fearing salt of the earth types and not prone to this Anti-God crap.
Posted this again, did a search and came up with nothing.
Thank you. I don’t believe the Westboro Baptist Church is associated with the Baptist Convention.
Last I heard was they were planning to go to Australia to protest Heath Ledgers memorial and his family or something like that.
Nor are many independent fundamentalist Babtist churches.
Cowards.

Any one see ANY coverage on this on MSM?
4 or 5 code pinkos in Berkley get wide coverage - 3,000 pro-troops, pro-Americans rally - nada.
Blaring media bias
Think about sending the TV links to anyone you know overseas. They need to know America is behind them. They wont hear it in the MSlimeMedia.

we should FREEPMAIL them and ask them where THEIR cameras were!
talk about Blatant Bias...
a handful of code pinkos chain themselves to the entrance of the Marine Hq in Berkley - massive media coverage.
3,000 pro-America, pro-troops rally in protest of the scum-group, the scum-group ‘cowards out’ - the press ignores the rally.
Shame, Shame on the MSM -
This is a story in and of itself - we need to get RUSH et al to cover it............

Never mind the MSM bias. What about the Admin Moderator bias? I posted this article in "News/Activsim", but they moved it to "General/Chat". By their criteria every time Westboro Baptist Church pickets or fails to picket a local military funeral, it's just a local story.
Not really. I doubt they are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. There really isn't a hierarchy that has any authority among Baptists the way there is among Catholics.
Which is probably why, when I did a search before posting my thread, it didn't show?
I wondered why your post was in "general chat"?
Truly discouraging - as is the apparent lack of interest military posts garner even on FR...
It seems now, on FR, if the title doesn't include "Britney", "Paris", "OJ", "Code Pink" or "Mormon", most Freepers aren't interested.
It seems today's FR is not the old FR?

BTW, does anyone have Rush's current email add?
In a more civilized age, Phelps and his vile flock of fools would have been dealt with long ago and in a permanent manner.
Such a shame.
“I dont believe the Westboro Baptist Church is associated with the Baptist Convention.”
Westboro Batist Church (the ‘p’ is silent).
Westboro MoonBatist Church.

Here's an article from today's Corpus Christi Caller-Times from which I posted the previous pictures.
Thousands rally, behind military, against group
By Mike Baird
Sunday, February 3, 2008CORPUS CHRISTI — More than 2,700 patriots rallied Saturday near Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi in what police say was one of the largest demonstrations in recent memory.
Military supporters from throughout the state, as well as Arizona, Missouri and Oklahoma, were drawn to the base in response to a protest planned by a Kansas-based religious group that says the Jan. 16 death of three Navy helicopter crewmen was a message against the military from God.
The religious group did not attend, Navy officials and police said.
But thousands of demonstrators did, armed with the red, white and blue of American flags and yellow ribbons, which remained tied to almost everything within arm's reach along NAS Drive when they left.
"This is the largest protest any of us ever remember in Corpus Christi, but they're all here for the right reason," said Capt. John Houston, who oversaw traffic units in anticipation of large crowds.
"America -- love it or leave it," was the resounding call of about two dozen Gregory-Portland High School teens who brandished signs. Sailors leaving the base waved, honked and yelled thanks to supporters.
"It was a demonstration of love," said Bob Torres, spokesman for the Navy. "I've never seen such motivating placards giving such wonderful support for our troops. It's a great moment for us."
Police grew concerned about noon, when the protesting religious group was expected to arrive.
"It's them, it's them," someone in the crowd yelled, causing a rush of people toward about 20 local student anti-war protesters who carried vulgar signs. Carla Reed, a Rockport bookkeeper, was one of about 25 people who thrust flagpoles into the air, cloaking the group with flapping flags. At the same time, the thunder of hundreds of revving motorcycles drowned the student group's anti-war chant.
But the Del Mar College students were protesting the hate and other anti-lifestyle messages of the Kansas group, said Jay Spitzer, 23, a cook and student with the group.
"Our community has spoken," said Police Chief Bryan Smith. "We're here just to make sure they speak peacefully and get home safe."
Jennifer Hutson, 30, brought the infant son of soldier Wallace Tinnin II of Rockport, and said she wants him home safe from Iraq. She and her family members respect that protesters have their freedom of speech but said it's only because of our soldiers.
"God blesses our soldier," she yelled repeatedly.
Business owners opened their doors, parking lots and bathrooms to the crowds.
Sandra Goldsworthy, 45, owner of Boardwalk Cafe, sat straddled atop her 6-foot-tall sign waving two flags. Beneath her, Julie Kenner, 45, who owns four resale shops, handed paper flags to passersby.
"I'm staying until the last motorcycle leaves," she said. "I'm losing a lot of money not working my shops, but it's more important work today waving these flags."
The sea of flags stretched from the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi property line, about 400 yards outside the NAS Drive gate, to the entrance ramp for South Padre Island Drive.
Jackie Kiser, 56, a manager for a local refinery, stood nearest the line silently holding a flag.
"I'm just an American today," he said.
I guess Soros forgot to send Fred his check this month.
Get use to that. The press has ignored the DC Chapter of the FR since 1998.
Part of the upshot of what she said is, these people believe that they (and possibly a few lone individuals out there) are God's last faithful remnant in the world. So I really doubt they're affiliated with any baptist association.
Yeah I know, my spiritual roots go way back in the SBC. My G-G-Grandfather and his brother were frontier Baptist preachers who jointly founded the Peace River Baptist Association before the War Between the States, which was later incorporated into the SBC after the war. My G-Grandfather was a SBC pastor and home missionary for many years before he passed away in 1898, my maternal grandfather was very active in the SBC, and my parents were both Baptists. You might say that I am steeped in Baptist doctrine, practice, and Baptist peculiarities.
I left the SBC denomination in the early 1960s in protest of the creeping liberalism in it's seminaries and the colleges and universities it supported and have been a member of a large independent Baptist church for over 40 years. Even though I am no longer a Southern Baptist, I suppose that my Baptist heritage may be one reason why I am so incensed and outraged by the travesty of the unGodly Westboro rabble calling themselves Baptists. I thoroughly loathe what I call their traitorous public activities, and I am totally opposed to practically everything that Westboro's abominable, hate-filled, reprobate leadership teaches and preaches.
Please don't anyone think for one NY minute that Westboro represents in any way, shape, or form the true beliefs and practices of actual Baptist churches or individual Baptists. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Still smarting from the reception they got in Reno last week.
Jackie Kiser, 56, a manager for a local refinery, stood nearest the line silently holding a flag.
"I'm just an American today," he said.
You just gotta love Texas. I'm proud that I can say that the paternal half of my family were born and bred Bexar county Texans, one of whom served in the Texas Rangers before the War Between the States when Mexican cattle rustlers and Comanche war parties still made life hard as cut nails for Texas settlers.
They aren't. But they don't have to be to call themselves Baptist.
They might if Westboro Baptist claimed to be part of the Southern Baptist Convention. But Westboro doesn't so the Southern Baptists have no authority over them. Anyone can claim to be a Baptist church so long as they follow the principles of the faith.
They were coming to Waterville, NY, to protest the death of a young man killed in Iraq, but they never showed up. But, praise God, the Patriot Guard was there!
It will be more along the line of “Depart from me. I never knew you!”
Most of us know that, dear epow. The outside world might not, but FReepers do. You have a wonderful heritage.
What happened in Reno?
The better name is the Phelps Family Cult....I’ll buy the KoolAid!
Johnny Cash shot a man just to see him die
Thanks for being there, and thanks for posting the report. The homefront surge is working, too.
Great work by all the folks who showed up and showed support for our troops. Thank you all!
