Ricin Possibly Found at Las Vegas Motel
AP ^

Posted on 02/29/2008 3:14:39 AM PST by maquiladora

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Preliminary tests indicate that a package found at a motel contained the toxin ricin, and seven people have been taken to hospitals, authorities said.

Police were called to the Extended Stay America Motel on Thursday and retrieved a package from the motel manager that was determined to be a chemical or controlled substance, Officer Ramone Denby said.

Two preliminary tests indicate it contained ricin, he said. Results from further tests by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a second local lab are expected Friday, police said.

Homeland Security officials joined local police in the investigation. Officials from the FBI, Las Vegas Health District, a hazardous materials team and the National Guard were also at the scene.

Officers cordoned off the area and isolated the room where the substance was found.

Three motel employees and another person were quarantined and decontaminated at the site, then taken to hospitals for further testing, Denby said. All appeared to be in good condition, he said. Three police officers who had been exposed were also taken to hospitals.

It takes between six and eight hours for someone exposed to ricin to show signs of contamination, Denby said.

A woman who answered the phone at the motel declined comment.

Ricin is made from the waste left over from processing castor beans, and can be extremely lethal. As little as 500 micrograms, or about the size of the head of a pin, can kill a human, according to the CDC.

“Three motel employees and another person were quarantined and decontaminated at the site, then taken to hospitals for further testing,”

That simple statement hides a very uncomfortable process of being decontaminated.

Of course its better to be stripped naked and hosed down than to die from this poison.

In response to your message in the thread that got locked

Yeah, I already had read that this morning.

There’s NO use for ricin other than killing people.

When used in “cancer research” it is a chemically altered state that is used and not directly from a castor bean.

That someone even brings that up as a possibility tells me precisely how ignorant they are, whether is is a newsie, or a cop.

I can PROMISE you there are VERY few COPS that know anything about castor beans and ricin other than the crap they’ve read in the main stream media.

I find it rather obnoxious (and dim-witted) that the FR mods locked the other link to this article that was posted in Breaking News. This story is from AP, btw, and the other is from Fox news.

I would think this story is important enough to actually be in Breaking News. (rolls eyes) Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Only one purpose to extract ricin from
the Castor Bean and that is to kill someone. This stuff is very potent and requires ingestion or injection of less than a mg to kill an adult. Just another busted terrorist (aka mass murderers of innocent people, egs jack the ripper, john gacy, OBL or jeff Dahmer) plot most of the media will ignore to avoid crediting the Bush adminstration for protecting the country.

I just googled ‘ricin medical uses’and found this on the CDC Site:

Ricin has some potential medical uses, such as bone marrow transplants and cancer treatment (to kill cancer cells).

We returned from Vegas after a 4 day stay last week and have been sick with a bad case of flu for the last five days.

Onboard the SW Airlines flight to Chicago we sat behind a lone muslim man who was coughing and hacking big time. He ignored the flight attendents’ request to turn off his cell phone and buckle his seat belt for takeoff.

Ricin is a potent biological toxin (toxic protein) derived from part of the “waste” mash when beans from the castor plant (Ricinus communis) are processed during manufacture of castor oil.

Ricin is a stable substance, affected very little by extreme conditions, such as very hot or very cold temperatures.

Ricin can be in the form of a powder, a mist, a pellet, or it can be dissolved in water or weak acid. It is water-soluble, odorless, tasteless, and stable under ambient conditions.

Depending on the route of exposure (such as injection or inhalation), as little as 500 µ of ricin could be enough to kill an adult. A greater amount would be needed to cause death if ricin were ingested.

The extent of manifestations of ricin poisoning in humans depends on the amount of ricin to which a person was exposed, route of exposure, and extent of organ involvement.

Significant exposure to ricin would result in a relatively rapid, progressive worsening of symptoms over approximately 4 to 36 hours.

Death may occur within 36 hours of exposure. If death has not occurred by 5 days from exposure, the victim usually recovers.

It would take a deliberate act to manufacture ricin to poison people.

There have been several instances of ricin procurement for use as a terrorist or criminal weapon.

As a chemical weapon, ricin may be dispersed as a mist or powder, used to poison water or to contaminate food, or injected as a liquid into a person's body.

No antidote exists for ricin.

The most important factor is to avoid exposure. If exposure cannot be avoided, then the most important factors are to get ricin off or out of the body as quickly as possible, and to provide supportive medical care. Ricin poisoning represents a potential public health emergency and should be reported to public health agencies and the regional poison control center.

Yep. I doubt this stuff is cheap and someone is in big trouble if they left it behind. My concern is that what they found might be residual . Oh well...LE have thought they have found this stuff before and the preliminary tests were wrong. Maybe this will turn out to be harmless stuff too.

Who fed them this other possible scenerio?

An excellent question, who indeed. I doubt that the average LEO knows about the medical uses of ricin, or even what it is.

Perhaps law enforcement has been told to downplay any situation that could be perceived as terrorist related even if the evidence states otherwise. The excuse being that they don't want to "alarm people".

I was at the SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor) Show a few weeks ago. My husband and I came home both with really bad bronchial infections. It took a doctor’s visit and antibiotics to clear it up.

Can’t remember when I’ve been so sick, and it lasted two weeks. My doctor said the flu test was negative, it was a bronchial infection. Hubby came down with it the day before we left, and me the following day.

The SHOT Show is a trade show for manufacturers of every kind of gun, accessory, for police, military, and hunters.

It would have been a REALLY bad time for a terrorist to pull something LOL.

There was a news article linked in one of the other threads that a person who came to the room to pick up something was also in the hospital. Here's my cut'n'paste from it:

Three hotel employees and a fourth person who came to the room to retrieve some items were taken to the hospital as a precaution, Officer Ramon Dendy told CNN.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.....

I wonder what that person's name is...
