EVERETT, Wash. -- A 10-year-old Everett boy has died in a Seattle hospital after an accident in a sandbox.
A spokeswoman for Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center confirms that Codey Porter died Monday.
In a statement, the boy's relatives say they appreciate "all the support and prayers" they have received and have decided to honor his memory by donating his organs.
Codey's family said earlier that the TV cartoon "Narutu" gave him and his friends the idea of burying him head first in a sandbox. They thought he was joking Saturday when he struggled.
Sheriff's deputies questioned the five children who were playing with Codey and say it was a tragic accident.
Codey was a fifth-grader at Silver Firs Elementary in Everett.
It sounds like they did it on purpose.
1. Young innocent boy killed senselessly.
2. Kids too stupid to realize that what happens in cartoons doesn't happen the same way in real life.
3. Parents naming their son 'Codey'.
I wonder why a 10 yo would struggle. Are they not strong enough to pull their head out of the sand. The story is written as though the parents thought he was joking as he struggled.

It’s tragic that the boy died, but you’d think that by the time kids were 10 years old, they’d realize you can’t do all those things they show in cartoons.

They did, although the (surviving) kids say it had been the (now dead) kid’s idea. I’d be curious to know what the age ranges were. Any kid over 7 or 8 should know better than to bury anyones head.

I can see now that Washington’s congressional representatives will immediately take up the “Sandbox Registration Bill”. All sandboxes will be required to have “sandbox locks” installed and individuals less than 21 can’t play in them any longer. In fact, Seattle will likely institute a “buy-back” program to get these evil things out of the hands of irresponsible owners. It’s all “For the Children”.
Kids don’t get it about death. No doubt they buried him like that on purpose, but I highly doubt they intended to kill him.
I think it was just childish irresponsibility that they will have to live with, though.

Goodness, now I see the kid was 10!? How can you not know better than that at his age? Was he “slow”? Were the other kids encouraging him to do something stupid?

That’s about the only thing that makes sense about why he simply didn’t pull his head out of the sand.
People get buried up to their necks on beaches all the time and all they have to do is sit up to get out. Sand does not compact that hard.
When I played in the sandbox as a kid the cat kept covering me up.

According to the other article I read (before the child died), it said he was buried up to his chest. But you have to wonder, were his arms also buried? I didn’t think sandboxes were particularly deep. Lord bless him, the child is with Jesus now, but do you think he was perhaps slow for his age?
That they held him is also possible. They’ll have to live with that the rest of their lives.
I would not be surprised if at least two massive claims are filed over this, civil and criminal, if not actually heard.
Contingent liability and so much more on the part of the companies who sponsored the show and if I understand correctly, get to read the scripts.
The mind boggles.
And yet, where were ALL the parents during the TV show—or the initial sand burial?
