Tuckable holster? Springfield XD/Kel-Tec PF9
Chasaway

Okay, dudes and dudettes...

I need some help. I'm looking for an inside the waistband, tuckable holster for my Springfield XD SubCompact. I'd LIKE to buy the Tucker holster (pic below), but I don't want to wait 4 or 5 months.

I know I've seen some other, similar holsters that have a shorter delivery time, but can't remember 'em or where I saw 'em.

I'd rather have leather than the plastic-y stuff, so if you know of somewhere I can look and you've got some reviews of the holster, I would really, really, really appreciate your direction.

I live on the coast in S. Texas, so vests, coats, etc. aren't an option. I need something I can wear under a tucked-in polo or button down shirt...

I also would like to be able to slip my PF-9 into it whenever I want. I know it won't fit well, but it'll do for just walking around work.

desantis makes some interesting stuff. i like their hunting holsters, but haven't tried any of their concealed leather products.
i do have their belly band which i find rather comfortable. conceals my p220, my compact 1911, and my j-frame equally well.

I looked a long time before I decided on the XD SubCompact. I’m like you. I love mine; more than a man ought to love an inanimate object (although, I’m beginning to think mine loves me back...).

It shoots amazingly well for the short sight radius, the trigger is terrific and it breaks down in nothing flat.

Although it seems “broad in the beam”, it’s actually flatter across the grip than a 1911...which is my all-time favorite pistol. Seems weird, but it is true...

I have three observations for you. The first is to pick up a Galco Crossbreed Supertuck as an intirm holster that's pretty close to what you're after. They're made for the XD Compact, and Galco stuff is about as available as you can ask for.

Second thing: If you can afford it right now, go ahead and order the Tucker, and once it comes in try it and see if you really do like it better than the Galco rig. If you do, no prob, you can happily let whichever one with which you're less pleased go to a new XD owner for what you've got in it- and until then, you've got a spare.

Third possibility: A $20 Triple K Skeleton Belt Slide holster, also usable worn under the belt, as a crossdraw rig should you have to work from a sitting position a lot, or, reversed, as a weak-side holster should you damage your strong hand. I don't know which model is most suitable with the XD, but I've got one from the 1970s that frequently carries a .45 Commander, a Browning GP, a Walther PP or a Makarov, depending on the jacket or hooded sweatshirt worn with it; I'd expect that the Ruger P85 rig would come pretty close to being a solid fit- these guys would know: XD Forum The Triple K rig is also available with a retention strap for those whose agency regs one asTriple K's "Secret Agent" holster, a bit less multipurpose than the skeleton unit, but still a nice pick for a spare or loaner rig.

Oh, and spare mag carriers, Dawson and Heine night sights and spare parts and XD goodies? You'll want to check these folks, who offer some pretty nice holster rigs specifically for the XD Compact, too: Pistolgear XD45 Compact

I also recommend comp-tac [www.comp-tac.com].

Ahhh...great minds...

"...The first is to pick up a Galco Crossbreed Supertuck as an interim..."

That's exactly what I'm going to do! I ordered the Tucker a week or so ago (it's gonna be a long wait!) and was looking for a good "interim" holster.

I've seen the Galco and wondered if it'd work.

Thanks for the suggestion... C

You may find it wants a little rework or modification, depending on your build, gun carry position, and the size of your hand. See all sorts of Crossbreed thoughts, including modification info *here.*

Really, though, don't overlook the value of one of those cheapie Triple K skeleton rigs as an additional item. They can be used VERY effectively as a *between the belt and the pants* rig worn on the inside side of the belt, which is how I wear mine with a hoodie sweatshirt with a kangaroo pouch. The inside of the sweatshirt pouch-pocket is cutaway, and access to Mr. Colt is simple and foolproof.

And in really nasty weather when you'd rather not get a top-grade holster soaked but really REALLY want to have your XD available, the Triple K rig is again the answer. And of course they're a much better arrangement than most of the cheapie nylon *utility grade* holsters.

Final tip to all:

Purchase a few, high quality, Hawaiian shirts. The good ones have solid buttons and are made of high quality fabric. You can wear them with shorts or jeans in a casual setting, or the highest quality shirts can be paired with a good pair of Dockers for a look more dressed up than jeans. The advantage is that the shirts are designed to be worn un-tucked.

I used to be fond of the guayabera shirts popular South of the border for much the same reason. Likewise meant to be worn loose and untucked in warmish weather, they're pretty commonplace in the US Southwest.

That's still not the answer for the still-chilly days and chillier evenings of Spring. But I'm getting by with a long-sleeved *hoodie* sweatshirt when a jacket isn't worn, with a *kangaroo pouch* tunnel in front. Snip away the fabric beneath that tunnelled pocket, and you not only have a concealed piece covered by sweatshirt, but you can have your hand *in your pocket* ready on the pistol's grip, ready to begin the draw stroke. Like Gomer Pyle used to say: Sur-prise, sur-PRIZE!

I like that guayabera shirt. Nice. I plan to keep a look out for some.

I enjoyed your hoodie alteration—great idea. My wife laughs at me because I plan my wardrobe and shop for clothes around concealed carry. For example, some light jackets have elastic or are tight around the bottom—avoid those! Purchase light jackets that drop straight down and will not rise up above the concealed item. Also during the winter I often wear a sport coat. It makes someone my age look very proper and mature.
