Legendary rockers Journey have hired a Filipino fan to front the band after parting ways with Jeff Scott Soto earlier this year.
The band discovered Arnel Pineda, from Quezon City in the Philippines via YouTube, when they saw footage of him singing Journey songs in his homeland with his band The Zoo.
Original frontman Steve Perry was replaced in 1998 with Steve Augeri who was forced to leave the band due to health problems.
But Pineda almost missed his dream job after initially assuming emails from guitarist Neal Schon were a hoax.
My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime? So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history.
The band are currently working on a new album with producer Kevin Shirley, tentatively scheduled for a spring/summer 2008 release.
I just might have to go see them in concert just to see how he sounds live.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo I am going to miss Steve Perry...Hopefully this guy will sound just as good then
Steve Perry’s been gone since 1999 actually. He was replaced by Steve Augeri, who sounded similar enough, but couldn’t hit the high notes as well...then Augeri quit last year, another guy, Jeff Scott Soto, was with them for a short time, then he left, and now, Arnel Pineda, whose name sounds somewhat Hispanic but he’s Filipino.
I can’t imagine a situation where I would ever go see Journey, but now I am extra-super-double not going to go to a Journey Concert.
Oh ok....sees how much I know, lol
By the way, I see you are from MD, may I ask what part?
I am in Delaware
er, that guy really handles this song nicely -
Laurel, soon to be Columbia in about a month. Originally from Akron, OH.
Where in Delaware? Not that there are many places IN Delaware! ;-)
“Original front man Steve Perry was replaced in 1998...”
The Day The Music Died (for me.) *SOB*
Don’t even get me STARTED on David Lee Roth leaving Van Halen, unless you want to see me go all hysterical, LOL!
Fun Fact: Robin Zander of “Cheap Trick” kissed me once. *SIGH* I’ve not washed my lips since 1977. (Just kidding!) ;)
Got a Ping List? Add me, please. :)
Ha ha ha, smart alec....a small town that is a speed trap, called Greenwood
The Philipines were a colony of Spain before they were a colony of the USA. Spanish names are very common there.
How did you manage to get kissed by Robin Zander?
The Caveman went to see Iron Maiden when they played LA. Cool
I heard a rumor that Shirley might not do Maiden’s next album, but that it may be Martin Birch...
Is Herbie still managing Journey?
I saw Journey in Charlotte, NC 2 years ago. One of the best shows I've ever seen. They opened for Def Leppard. I bet there were 30 K people there.
Well, Cheap Trick started out as a typical “Garage Band” way back when in Rockford, IL...and I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Robin’s also an awesome bowler, LOL! :)
However, he’s in his 50’s now, and I’m in my late 40’s, so we’ve both grown up and gone on to other things beyond necking at the bowling alley, LOL!
I already saw this movie.
He quits on stage during a concert and lets some other random fan from the crowd have the job.
Did you see the concert footage? Of him with Journey? That guy can *sing*. wow.
OK - I know where that is.
The company I work for has an office in Rehoboth Beach.
Oh ok, may I ask what company?
Yeah, I clicked the Don’t Stop Believin’ link. He matches Steve Perry pretty closely.
OMG!!!!!!! This guy is good (ditch the band, but keep the singer) we’re BIG Journey fans in this house.
I can see new CDs being bought with this guy singing.
Actually, they are a great live band, even if you don't like their hit singles - Neal Schon gets to play solos...a lot. ;)
That guy’s got a great voice...
Needs to work on the accent a little, and Steve Perry he’s not, but pretty darn close.
You poor baby. (pat pat pat) I hated to see Steve Perry leave Journey too, but at least the Moody Blues are still together.
(please God, let it be forever)
Okay, in all fairness, he’s okay. Personally, I thought he had trouble with the tempo just a bit. That said, I’d like to hear him on “City by the Bay,” or whatever that song is called.
I was told long ago that the bar districts in the Philipines are chock full of talented mimics. If that’s true, finding a Steve Perry sound-alike there is no big deal.
My all-time favorite is the solo in Stone in love. Awesome!!
Guess they never heard or saw Gregg Rolie.
In 1985 I Saw a Philippino band in Olongapo at the club US Festival on Magsaysay Drive. If you closed your eyes you would have thought Journey was performing. I saw and heard a lot of good musicians and singers in Po city that month.
Thanks, sweetness!

-Their new song...not bad!
Anyone see this guy on the pre-game show yesterday? I thought Journey was great and this guy was very likeable.
