Were you on for the last weekend sprint? Maybe we had a “Q”. I’m thinking of staying with the manual key and perhaps build a sideswiper next.

When I was in my teens, I spent a lot of time listening on an old Hallicrafters SX-42. That thing was heavy.

Glad to see so many Freepers are of an “inquisitive” midset

Thats great, No, I haven’t been on for about 6 months. There’s bad RFI in the area I hope to fix.

I was busy on SKCC before that, mostly when it was first started. I did Fists for about 5 years before that.

The straight key is fine if you enjoy it, I like them.

I’ve used Sideswipers alot, haven’t built one. Though thats a good idea, you can build one from brass stock and a block of wood. I often used the Spanish LLAVES model ‘GMM’. It was around $70.

They are fun to learn, and not many ppl use em anymore. You use your wrist to key back and forth starting from your right, never using the same side more than once.

The Big Kahuna! Widowmaker! If you have ever tried to lift a radio this size, you know what I'm talking about. This superlative communications receiver represents a peak of post-World War II radio technology. And it weighs about as much as a 1947 Buick.

L0L!!

Given a choice of the 3 below, all around a grand (slightly used)

NRD-535
AOR AR-5000+3 (with active loop antenna)
ICOM IC-8500 (with Sony active ultrawideband antenna)

Which would you chose?

PS - it's wouldn't be hard to set up a small pinglist for anyone interested... (scanning/swl/DXing)

“I used to work on the R390 back in the day in the navy.”

I used to work with R390s back in the early 1980s. I don’t know but I might still be able to zero one out.

I dabbled briefly as a MARS operator at my base in Germany back in the 80’s. I was stationed at Bismarck Kaserne in Schwaebisch Gmuend with the 56th FA Bde (Pershing). I was the MARS operator for about 8 months. My MOS was 05B (later 31K) at the time.

My call sign for the net was AEM1HKE. I loved doing it...hey, it was cushy duty!
