Alleva expected to be LSU AD

* Published: Apr 4, 2008 - UPDATED: 4:23 p.m.

Duke University Athletic Director Joe Alleva is expected to take over as LSU’s next athletic director, three LSU board members confirmed confidentially on Friday.

LSU Board of Supervisors members said they were being notified Friday afternoon that Alleva is the choice of top university officials to succeed Skip Bertman as athletic director, three board members said.

The three board members spoke on condition of anonymity. The three said they did not want to upstage LSU’s plans for the official announcement.

Alleva, 54, would be chosen from a group of four finalists named Wednesday after public interviews that also included University of Kentucky Deputy AD Rob Mullens and LSU senior associate AD’s Verge Ausberry and Herb Vincent.

As of 4 p.m., Charles Zewe, LSU System spokesman said, “At this moment, we’re not prepared to make an announcement.”

LSU System President John Lombardi has been in discussions about the AD job much of the day and did not return calls.

Alleva is the only sitting AD of the four and has the most experience. He has worked at Duke since 1976 and served as AD starting in 1998.

He was the athletic department’s finance director for much of his career.

But Alleva also faced some criticism for the way the university handled the controversial Duke lacrosse team rape allegations in 2006. All charges against the players involved were eventually dropped.

Could be the guy is leaving Duke because of the lynching apptitude of faculty and administrators for selected sports figures.

Does this mean that white athletes at LSU need to watch their backs?

From an earlier thread concerning Alleva interviewing for the job:

"I was nominated for that job," Alleva said. "[But] I frankly never considered it at all. Never considered it. I have one of the best jobs in the country right here."

If Alleva can say that after the way Duke handled their lacrosse debacle, I don't know why LSU would want him. He must have been part of the problem.

It's too bad he didn't stay at Duke and live with the mess there.

Out of all the people they could have picked, they have to get the guy who was A.D. when the Duke fiasco happened?

WTH?

This is going to be the absolute biggest Charlie Foxtrot in Western Civilization. Alleva has no earthly idea what he's in for. The coonasses and the Louisiana sportswriters will eat him alive. Not to mention he's got rich alums who all think they're assistant athletic directors and coaches. Then there's the politicians. An entire legislature full of meddlers.

He had none of this at Duke, since it was a private school with only a handful of alums to deal with.

And don't get me started about the Perrilloux situation. That guy, within five years, will be stretched out on some coroner's table with half a dozen bullet holes in him. Miles is completely stupid not to cut him loose. Now.

Well he might get lucky:

1. Miles has good will after last season and if he continues to win 10ish games a year, no problem for the AD.

2. If he were to get lucky and sign a decent basketball coach, that would not be an early issue in his tenure as AD. [From all I read, he can not help but hire a more likable person than Brady.]

3. Then the issue is baseball. Maybe after Smoke the expectations are a little more reasonable. Regardless, Mainieri is new and was hired by Bergman so he has fan support for a while.

4. In women’s basketball, track etc. thing seem reasonably stable.

So he is showing up at a good time. As long at his basketball hire is not a one or two year disaster, he has time to adjust to the job. But all bets are off is Miles jumps after a year or baseball does not improve next year.

Nope. LSU fans are the worst of the worst when it comes to "what have you done for me lately." Miles has to at least come close to winning the championship again, or he's a gone pecan. Plus he's got the Perrilloux thing roiling the water.

2. If he were to get lucky and sign a decent basketball coach, that would not be an early issue in his tenure as AD. [From all I read, he can not help but hire a more likable person than Brady.]

Watch for talk about Coach K moving to LSU.

There are three things that count when it comes to LSU Sports. Football, football and football. All the rest is filler between football seasons. I go back six generations in Louisiana. I know these people. My family is infected with LSU fanatics through and through. They are not normal people.

So he is showing up at a good time. As long at his basketball hire is not a one or two year disaster, he has time to adjust to the job. But all bets are off is Miles jumps after a year or baseball does not improve next year.

He cannot adjust. It is a metaphysical impossibility. Louisianans march to a different drummer. I know whereof I speak - I'm one of them.

Well, I don’t if I told you I taught at LSU a year and then at UNO for a couple of more. I agree then at least it was a football state. I do suspect they won’t understand being terrible in baseball after the Bergman run.

The LSU fans put up the Charlie Mac for a decade despite never quite getting over the UAL hump. They put up with terrible teams after McClendon with the Arnspager interlude until this little Sabin/Miles run.

That's my point. Now that they've had a taste of championship teams the past few years, they will be satisfied with nothing less. If you ask a true LSU fan about Chollie Mac, they'll dismiss it with the wave of a hand like it was some sort of bad dream.

You must understand, to a real LSU fanatic, every game is just like it was on Halloween 1959.

not just that - he did not handle the program well - most Dukies I know blame him for a failed program and are probably celebrating his departure.

Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva to Take Similar Post at LSU

Alleva spent 32 total years at Duke, including the past 10 as the school’s athletic director.

Friday, April 4, 2008

Durham, NC — Joe Alleva resigned from his post as Duke University’s Director of Athletics on Friday to accept a similar position at LSU.

Alleva spent 32 total years at Duke, including the past 10 as the school’s athletic director.

“After deliberating with my family and several colleagues here at Duke, I have decided to accept the Director of Athletics position at Louisiana State University,” Alleva said. “For over 30 years, I have committed myself to Duke University, and for the past 10, I have been fortunate to lead one of the nation’s best departments of athletics. I am appreciative of my time Duke, and even more grateful for the relationships I have forged while working here, particularly in the Department of Athletics. I hope that Duke continues to enjoy the success it has maintained for so many years.”

Duke President Richard H. Brodhead expressed his appreciation for Alleva’s contributions to Duke.

“I am grateful to Joe Alleva for his many years of service to Duke University,” Brodhead said. “Duke athletics sets an example of success and integrity of the highest order, and Joe has played a key role in achieving these results. I know there are very few opportunities that could lure him away from Duke. Joe and his family have our appreciation for their many contributions to the Duke community, and our best wishes for success at LSU.” Duke athletics flourished under Alleva’s direction.

Six Duke teams have won national championships since his appointment as director of athletics, and 44 Blue Devil teams notched ACC championships -– the second-highest total among ACC schools since 1997-98.

Simultaneously, Duke’s graduation rates for its student-athletes have ranked among the best in the nation, with the most recent Federal Graduation Rate at 91 percent. In 2007, Duke finished first among league schools on the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the 20th consecutive year.

The Blue Devils finished fifth in the 2005 Division I Directors’ Cup, which rates athletics departments nationwide based on the success of its teams. Duke followed that up with an eighth-place finish in 2006 and an 11th-place showing in 2007.

In the 2007, National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings that combine a school’s Directors’ Cup finish, its athletic graduation rates and its academic ranking in U.S. News and World Report, Duke was the top-ranked Division I school in the nation. Duke also finished first in this listing in both 2005 and 2006 and second in 2004.

Additionally, Duke student-athletes have reached out to the local community through several programs, such as Duke’s award-winning Verizon Read with the Blue Devils that assists Durham teachers by providing reading incentives to third and fourth graders. In 2006-07, Duke student-athletes volunteered nearly 3,000 community outreach hours.

In 10 years, Alleva and his fundraising team raised nearly $200 million in gifts and funded more than $85 million in new facilities or renovation. Annual giving to the Iron Dukes has increased 50 percent since 2000, including a record $11 million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007.

Alleva has been active on the national collegiate athletics scene, serving on the Football Bowl Certification Committee and the Gatorade Advisory Board. He sits on ACC committees on Finance, Infractions and Penalties, Television (chair), Football, and Men’s Basketball. At Duke, Alleva is part of the Undergraduate Leadership Group, the Committee on Undergraduate Affairs and the University Athletic Council. Additionally, he recently completed his service on the NCAA Division 1 Championships/Competition Cabinet.

A native of Suffern, N.Y., Alleva joined the athletics staff in 1980 and was named assistant director of athletics in July 1986. He has also served as assistant director of the Iron Dukes during his tenure. In 1987, Alleva was promoted to associate director of athletics. From the mid-1980s until 1998, he also served as the athletics business manager during a time of rapid growth.

Alleva played football and baseball at Lehigh University and was football captain in 1974. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1975 and served as a graduate assistant football coach for Lehigh, earning an MBA in 1976. Alleva joined Duke in 1976 working for the vice president for business and finance.

He also has played a key role in Durham’s community sports scene. He started Little League Baseball in Durham more than 15 years ago and an American Legion baseball program in the area. Alleva is a member of the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, Suffern H.S. Hall of Fame and the Rockland County Hall of Fame.

Alleva and his wife, Annie, have two sons, J.D. (Duke, ‘01) and Jeff (Duke, ‘03), and a daughter, Jenny (Duke, ‘07), all of whom played sports at Duke.
